Pointed dripstone can hurt entities in two different ways: a falling stalactite can hit something below, while a stalagmite increases fall damage when something lands on it. The numerical figure available is for landing on a stalagmite: the community-maintained reference gives ceil(fall_distance × 2 − 2) damage, with a normal jump onto one stalagmite causing 1 HP. Mojang confirms both hazards but does not publish a numerical amount for a falling stalactite’s impact.
How much damage does a stalagmite do?
When an entity lands on the topmost block of a stalagmite, the fall distance is doubled for the fall-damage calculation. The Pointed Dripstone reference gives the formula as ceil(fall_distance × 2 − 2), where fall_distance is the distance fallen before landing. It gives a normal-height jump onto a single stalagmite as an example: the player takes 1 HP of damage. Pointed Dripstone reference
The reference cautions that this formula is slightly inaccurate at longer distances because it omits the distance moved during the final game tick of falling. Treat it as a useful estimate rather than a guaranteed exact result for every fall.
How much damage does a falling stalactite do?
A stalactite can fall from above and hurt an entity it hits. Mojang confirms that impact, but its official Block of the Week: Dripstone article and Java Edition Snapshot 20w48a notes do not give a numerical damage amount. The stalagmite formula does not describe this impact, so it should not be used to calculate falling-stalactite damage.

What counts as dripstone damage?
These damage mechanics apply to pointed dripstone, not the solid dripstone block. Pointed dripstone can hang downward as a stalactite or grow upward as a stalagmite. Mojang describes both directions as hazards: a stalactite can hurt an entity below when it falls, and a player can be hurt by falling onto a stalagmite.
When can the damage be avoided?
The Pointed Dripstone reference says mobs that are immune to fall damage do not take damage from landing on stalagmites. It also says players avoid this damage when the fallDamage gamerule is false. The formula and these exceptions are reference-based; Mojang’s cited official pages confirm the general hurt mechanics but do not supply the numerical calculation.

How reliable is the number?
The 1 HP example and formula come from a community-maintained reference, not from the cited Mojang articles. Mojang’s sources establish that pointed dripstone hurts, but provide no damage figures. The snapshot notes describe Java Edition Snapshot 20w48a, so that historical announcement alone does not establish exact behavior in every current edition or version. Check the game edition and version if you need an exact result.
