A level 70 Feral Druid with 3/3 Survival of the Fittest needs 2.6% additional reduction to the chance of being critically hit from gear to meet the guide’s raid-boss crit-immunity target. That reduction can come from Defense Rating, Resilience Rating, or a combination. The commonly cited 490 Defense skill target is for a level 70 character facing a level 73 mob before accounting for the druid’s talent.
How much crit reduction does a bear need?
Survival of the Fittest reduces the chance to be critically hit by 3%. The Feral Tank guide’s target for a raid boss is 5.6% total reduction, leaving 2.6% for gear after the talent is applied (Wowhead’s TBC Feral Druid Tank Stat Priority and Attributes Guide).
This is a crit-immunity threshold, not a universal gear set. The amount of Defense or Resilience you need depends on the rating already on your gear and on whether you have all three talent points in Survival of the Fittest.
How much Defense Rating or Resilience Rating is that?
For level 70 characters, the guide gives these conversions for reducing the chance to be critically hit:

- 39.4 Resilience Rating per 1% crit reduction.
With no Resilience, the guide’s endpoint for the remaining 2.6% is 154 Defense Rating. With no Defense, it is 103 Resilience Rating. These are alternative endpoints of the same calculation, not requirements to reach both figures. If your gear has both ratings, count their contributions together toward the 2.6%.
Resilience provides more crit reduction per rating point, but it does not provide avoidance. Defense contributes avoidance as well as crit reduction, including after the crit-immunity target is reached (Wowhead’s Feral Tank stat guide).

Why do people say a bear needs 490 Defense?
The 490 figure refers to Defense skill, not Defense Rating. A level 70 character needs 490 Defense skill to avoid critical hits from level 73 mobs, according to Wowhead’s general TBC stats overview. At level 70, 2.4 Defense Rating adds one Defense skill (Wowhead’s Overview of all Stats for TBC Classic).
That general target does not account for Survival of the Fittest. A fully talented bear gets 3% crit reduction from the talent, so it does not need to reach the untalented 490 Defense skill target using Defense alone. Defense Rating is the rating shown on gear; Defense skill is the resulting character stat. They are related, but are not interchangeable numbers.

Does crit immunity prevent crushing blows?
No. Avoiding critical hits and preventing crushing blows are separate goals. The Feral Tank guide notes that bears cannot avoid crushing blows in the way shield tanks can; they manage the risk with high armor and health. Whether reaching crit immunity is decisive also depends on the content and whether a critical hit could threaten the tank’s survival (Wowhead’s Feral Tank stat guide).

Use the ratings to cover the remaining crit-reduction gap, then consider what the encounter asks of the rest of your gear. Defense can add avoidance beyond the threshold; Resilience is a more rating-efficient route to crit reduction but does not add avoidance. Armor, health, and threat needs also matter, so one rating target is not automatically the best choice for every dungeon, raid phase, or encounter.

Check the character’s talent allocation and current gear ratings before applying these figures. They describe level 70 bear tanking with 3/3 Survival of the Fittest in the TBC Classic guide context; they should not be carried over unchanged to a different TBC implementation or to a bear missing talent points.
