For US players, Nintendo Switch Online is the cheapest paid online-multiplayer subscription in this snapshot: $19.99 for one person for a year. PlayStation Plus Essential costs $79.99 annually, while Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is $22.99 per month, or $275.88 if every month is renewed for a year. The prices buy very different things, however: Nintendo emphasizes online access, classic Nintendo libraries and selected DLC; PlayStation layers online play onto monthly games and console catalogs; Xbox combines console and PC access, cloud gaming and major releases.
All figures below are US prices checked October 17, 2026. Nintendo and Microsoft state that prices can vary by region, and Microsoft changed Game Pass plans during 2025–2026, so check the live store before subscribing.

US prices at a glance
The table separates recurring monthly charges from prepaid periods. An annualized monthly figure is arithmetic based on the listed price; it is not a separate plan or a promise that the provider will keep that rate.
PlayStation Plus
| Tier | Monthly | Three months | 12 months | Annualized monthly cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $10.99 | $27.99 | $79.99 | About $6.67 |
| Extra | $16.99 | $43.99 | $134.99 | About $11.25 |
| Premium | $19.99 | $54.99 | $159.99 | About $13.33 |
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 2026 US listing says the 12-month Essential plan is discounted 39% versus paying monthly, while Extra and Premium are each discounted 33%. Paying month by month for a full year would total $131.88 for Essential, $203.88 for Extra and $239.88 for Premium; the listed annual prices are therefore the lower-cost commitment if you know you will use the service for the year.

Xbox Game Pass
| Plan | Monthly price | What the cited listing establishes | 12-month arithmetic if renewed monthly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultimate | $22.99 | Console and PC games, online console multiplayer, unlimited cloud gaming, in-game benefits and major day-one releases | $275.88 |
| PC Game Pass | $13.99 | PC subscription price after Microsoft’s April 21, 2026 update | $167.88 |
| Premium | $14.99 | 200+ games across console, PC and supported devices in Microsoft’s cloud-gaming guide | $179.88 |
Microsoft’s April 21, 2026 announcement says Ultimate fell from $29.99 to $22.99 per month. The cited update presents the current figures primarily as monthly prices; it does not establish a comparable US annual prepaid price. Xbox also says prices may vary by region. Tier names and benefits have changed recently, so use the regional Xbox storefront for the exact plan available to your account.
Nintendo Switch Online
| Plan | Monthly | Three months | Annual price | Annualized monthly cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Individual | $3.99 | $7.99 | $19.99 | About $1.67 |
| Family | Not offered | Not offered | $34.99 | About $2.92 for the group |
| Individual + Expansion Pack | Not listed | Not listed | $49.99 | About $4.17 |
| Family + Expansion Pack | Not offered | Not offered | $79.99 | About $6.67 for the group |
Nintendo’s support table says prices depend on country. The family memberships are annual plans intended for a Nintendo family group. Nintendo’s overview says a group of eight can bring the ordinary Family Membership to less than $5 per person per year; dividing the listed $34.99 price among eight accounts gives about $4.37 each. The same eight-person split would make the $79.99 Expansion Pack family plan about $10 per person per year.
What each PlayStation Plus tier actually includes
Essential: the online-play baseline
Essential is PlayStation’s entry tier at $10.99 per month, $27.99 every three months or $79.99 for 12 months in the US snapshot. It supplies online multiplayer, monthly games, cloud storage, Share Play, discounts and exclusive content. Choose it when your main requirement is playing purchased games online and you do not need a large rotating catalog.
Recommended Free Tools
The annual option is the meaningful value comparison: $79.99 is about $6.67 per month when spread across 12 months, versus $10.99 for monthly billing. That lower effective rate assumes you keep the subscription for the entire prepaid year.

- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.

- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
Extra: a downloadable Game Catalog
Extra costs $16.99 monthly, $43.99 for three months or $134.99 annually. It includes everything in Essential plus the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. The annual price works out to about $11.25 per month, compared with $16.99 when paid monthly.
A catalog subscription is not the same as owning every listed game. The lineup changes, and access depends on the game remaining in the catalog and on your subscription staying active. Check the current catalog before subscribing for one specific title.
Premium: classics, trials and streaming
Premium is $19.99 monthly, $54.99 for three months or $159.99 for 12 months. It adds the Classics Catalog, game trials and cloud streaming to the lower tiers. The annual price is about $13.33 per month, while 12 monthly payments would total $239.88.
PlayStation notes that PS4 games are added only intermittently from January 2026. That qualification matters if you are choosing Premium mainly for a steady flow of PS4 additions: the service does not promise a fixed monthly cadence.

What Xbox Game Pass pays for
Ultimate: the broadest single subscription
Ultimate is $22.99 per month after Microsoft’s April 21, 2026 update. It combines hundreds of console and PC games, online console multiplayer, unlimited cloud gaming, in-game benefits and major day-one releases. Renewed for 12 months at that monthly rate, it totals $275.88, although the cited update does not list an annual prepaid US plan.
Day-one access has an important timing caveat. Microsoft’s 2026 update says future Call of Duty games will arrive around the following holiday season rather than at launch. Therefore, do not interpret the general day-one language as a guarantee that every major franchise will be available on release day.
PC Game Pass: the PC-priced option
PC Game Pass is $13.99 per month after the same 2026 update, or $167.88 over 12 monthly renewals. The cited price is for the PC plan; it should not be treated as the price of console multiplayer access.
Premium: 200-plus games across supported devices
Microsoft’s cloud-gaming guide lists Game Pass Premium at $14.99 per month and describes 200+ games across console, PC and supported devices. That is a different emphasis from Ultimate’s broader benefits and day-one positioning. Because Microsoft has revised names and structures, compare the benefits shown in your regional store rather than relying on an older tier chart.

What Nintendo Switch Online adds
Individual membership
The ordinary individual plan costs $3.99 for one month, $7.99 for three months or $19.99 for a year. The annual price is the clear bargain for anyone expecting to play online throughout the year: it averages about $1.67 per month and is the lowest listed annual price among the three platform families.
Family membership
Family membership costs $34.99 annually. Nintendo’s family-group model can cover up to eight people according to its official overview. At the full eight-person split, the cost is about $4.37 per person for the year, but the per-person result rises when fewer people participate. The group must be organized through Nintendo’s account family-group system; it is not simply several profiles on one console.
Expansion Pack
Individual Expansion Pack membership is $49.99 annually, while the family version is $79.99 annually. Expansion Pack includes the ordinary online-service benefits plus classic libraries such as Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and Sega Genesis, along with selected downloadable content. Nintendo specifically lists Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass among the included DLC.
The $79.99 family price is attractive only when several members use the added libraries or DLC. At eight participants it averages about $10 per person per year; with one person it is four times the individual ordinary membership price, so the extra catalog must matter to you.

Which subscription is cheapest for online multiplayer?
Using the listed US prices, Nintendo Switch Online Individual is the winner at $19.99 for 12 months. PlayStation Plus Essential is next at $79.99 annually. The supplied Xbox update does not establish a comparable cheapest Xbox console-online price, so it would be misleading to rank an Xbox entry plan from these figures alone.
Monthly comparisons tell the same story but can obscure the billing periods. Nintendo’s $3.99 monthly price is lower than PlayStation Essential’s $10.99. Xbox Ultimate’s $22.99 monthly charge is much higher because it bundles a much larger cross-device service rather than functioning as a bare online-multiplayer tier.
Choosing by catalog, hardware and release timing
Pick Nintendo when you want the lowest annual fee or Nintendo classics
Choose the $19.99 individual plan if online play is the only requirement. Move to Expansion Pack when access to Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance or Sega Genesis libraries, or the listed DLC, justifies the additional $30 per year. A family group can change the calculation substantially, especially when several people use the service.

Essential covers the basic online and account features. Extra is the middle choice for players who regularly download games from the Game Catalog. Premium makes sense when classics, trials or cloud streaming are priorities. The catalog is curated for PlayStation hardware, and its contents change; do not treat a subscription catalog as a permanent library.
Pick Xbox when you use console, PC and cloud together
Xbox’s strongest differentiator in the cited descriptions is device coverage: Ultimate spans console, PC and cloud, while Premium is described across console, PC and supported devices. The higher monthly cost can be rational for someone who actually uses those platforms, plays included games frequently and values day-one releases. It is difficult to justify solely as the cheapest way to play a few console games online.
Quick Recap
Billing decisions that change the real cost
- Match the term to your usage. PlayStation’s annual discounts are substantial only if you remain subscribed for the year. A monthly plan can cost more over 12 months but avoids paying for months you will not use.
- Calculate family plans by actual members. Nintendo’s $34.99 and $79.99 prices are group totals. Divide by the number of participating accounts, not the maximum eight, when estimating your personal cost.
- Separate access from ownership. Catalog and classic-library benefits depend on an active membership and on the provider continuing to offer the title or DLC. Keep buying games you need to own permanently.
- Check platform compatibility. Xbox benefits vary by console, PC and supported cloud devices; PlayStation Premium streaming is an added feature of that tier; Nintendo’s Expansion Pack is centered on Nintendo software and selected DLC.
- Recheck before checkout. The prices here are a US snapshot from October 17, 2026. Microsoft and Nintendo explicitly note regional variation, and Xbox plan names and prices have changed during 2025–2026.
A practical decision checklist
- Write down whether you need online multiplayer, a game catalog, classic games, cloud play, PC access or day-one releases.
- Choose the cheapest tier that supplies that specific feature rather than comparing headline game counts alone.
- Multiply any monthly price by the number of months you realistically expect to use it. For PlayStation, compare that result with the published three-month and annual prices.
- For Nintendo family plans, divide the annual price by the confirmed number of participating accounts.
- Check the live regional storefront for tax, currency, current tier names and renewal terms before confirming payment.
