Ghost’s own hosting comparison uses $10 per month as an indicative self-hosting starting point. The software is open source, but the server, email delivery, backups, security work and your time are not free.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
The cheapest setup can therefore be close to the price of a basic cloud server. A newsletter publication or a site that needs managed resilience can cost several times more once email, backups, analytics and CDN/WAF services are included.

What you actually pay for
Self-hosting means you operate the Ghost software on infrastructure you choose. There is no Ghost software licence charge, but a working publication still has several cost layers:
- Compute: a virtual private server (VPS) that runs Ghost, its database and web server.
- Domain and DNS: a registered web address and the DNS records that point it to the server.
- Transactional and newsletter email: delivery infrastructure if you send newsletters or need reliable site email.
- Backups and recovery: copies of the database, images and configuration, stored somewhere separate from the live server.
- Operations: updates, SSL certificates, security hardening, monitoring and incident recovery.
Your monthly bill is the sum of the services you select. Your total cost of ownership also includes the value of the time you spend maintaining them.

VPS pricing and the RAM Ghost needs
Current DigitalOcean Basic Droplet examples put a small Ghost server at $6 per month for 1 GiB of RAM or $12 per month for 2 GiB. Ghost recommends at least 1 GB of RAM. DigitalOcean’s Ghost image is built and tested on a 2 GiB Droplet, so that size gives more headroom for the operating system, database, uploads and traffic bursts.
| VPS example | Monthly price | What the figure means | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 GiB Basic Droplet | $6/month | Current DigitalOcean Basic pricing example; meets Ghost’s stated minimum RAM recommendation but leaves less operating margin. | Very small personal blog with modest traffic and few concurrent tasks. |
| 2 GiB Basic Droplet | $12/month | Current DigitalOcean Basic pricing example; the Ghost image is built and tested at this memory size. | New publications that want more room for updates, imports, images and traffic spikes. |
| Ghost comparison baseline | From $10/month | Ghost Foundation’s 2026 indicative starting point for self-hosting, not a universal provider invoice. | Quick budgeting when you have not chosen a VPS vendor. |
RAM is not the only sizing concern. A blog that serves mostly cached pages can remain comfortable on a small instance, while large image libraries, membership activity, imports, integrations or sudden traffic can push a low-memory server into swapping or downtime. Starting at 2 GiB can be sensible when the difference is only a few dollars, but it does not remove the need to watch resource use.

The domain is a separate launch cost
A registered domain and a DNS record are required to complete a normal public Ghost setup. The price depends on the registrar, the top-level domain and whether the registration is promotional or renewing at a higher rate. Because those prices vary, treat the domain as a separate annual line in your budget rather than assuming it is included in the VPS.

You will point the domain’s DNS records at the server, wait for DNS changes to propagate, and then configure Ghost to use the final address. The domain remains a cost even if you later move to a different server: it identifies the publication, while the VPS is only the place where the software runs.
Optional services that can exceed the server bill
Ghost Foundation’s 2026 hosting comparison gives indicative self-hosting add-on prices. They are category-level starting figures, not guaranteed prices from every provider.
| Service | Ghost’s indicative figure | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Newsletter email delivery | From $15/month | When the publication sends newsletters rather than only displaying web pages. |
| Full-site backups | From $5/month | When you need recoverable copies of the database, media and configuration. |
| Analytics | From $10/month | When you want hosted measurement instead of operating your own analytics tooling. |
| CDN/WAF | From $20/month | When traffic volume, geographic distribution or attack protection justifies an edge service. |
| Image editor | From $12/month | When you want a separate hosted image-editing capability in the publishing workflow. |
These figures illustrate why the VPS is only one part of the calculation. A $6 server paired with $15 email delivery already has a larger service bill than its compute cost. Add the listed backup, analytics and CDN/WAF figures and the recurring service layer reaches $50 per month before the domain and any labor.

Email delivery for newsletters
Ghost’s indicative self-hosting figure is $15 per month for newsletter delivery. This is relevant when subscribers receive email editions; a site that only publishes web pages may not need that service. Check whether a provider’s price changes with subscriber count, monthly send volume or dedicated sending features before committing.
Backups and retention
Ghost lists full-site backups from $5 per month. A backup is useful only if it can be restored, so include storage location, retention period and restore testing in your decision. DigitalOcean’s percentage-based backup examples add 20% of the Droplet price for weekly backups or 30% for daily backups; usage-based plans are also available. On a $12 Droplet, those percentages would be $2.40 or $3.60 per month respectively, before any other storage or restore charges.
Analytics, CDN/WAF and image tools
Analytics at an indicative $10 per month, CDN/WAF at $20 and an image editor at $12 are convenience or resilience choices rather than requirements for every blog. A low-traffic personal site can defer them. A publication with a growing audience may decide that faster delivery, attack filtering, image workflow and dependable reporting are worth more than the minimum monthly bill.

Three realistic 2026 budgets
| Scenario | Recurring components | Indicative monthly total before domain | What is included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lean personal blog | $6 1 GiB VPS; optional backup | $6, or more with backup | Basic web publishing without newsletter delivery, hosted analytics or CDN/WAF. |
| More comfortable small site | $12 2 GiB VPS; optional backup | $12, or more with backup | Additional memory headroom for a new publication and routine maintenance. |
| Newsletter publication | $6–$12 VPS plus $15 email delivery | $21–$27 | Compute and the indicative newsletter service, before domain and backups. |
| Higher-reliability publication | $6–$12 VPS + $5 backups + $10 analytics + $20 CDN/WAF | $41–$47 | Indicative resilience, reporting and edge-service layer, before domain and email. |
The table uses the cited starting figures, so your actual invoice can be lower or higher. Newsletter email added to the higher-reliability example would bring the indicative service total to $56–$62 per month before the domain. These are planning scenarios, not fixed Ghost packages.
What self-hosting makes you responsible for
The cash price does not include the operational work that a managed plan performs for you. You must plan for:
- Installation: create the VPS, deploy Ghost and complete the initial administrator setup.
- DNS and SSL: point the domain to the server and keep HTTPS working as certificates renew.
- Updates: apply Ghost, operating-system and dependency updates while checking that themes and integrations still work.
- Security: protect administrator accounts, restrict access, monitor suspicious activity and keep software patched.
- Backups: schedule copies, keep them separate from the live server and verify that a restore is possible.
- Monitoring: watch disk space, memory, uptime, email delivery and error logs.
- Recovery: restore the site after a failed update, corrupted database, accidental deletion or server outage.
If you perform this work yourself, the expense is your time. If you hire help, the labor can quickly exceed the infrastructure bill. A low VPS price is therefore not the same as a low operating cost.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
A practical self-hosted launch sequence
- Choose the capacity. Select a VPS that meets Ghost’s at-least-1-GB RAM recommendation. A 2 GiB plan aligns with the memory size on which DigitalOcean’s Ghost image is built and tested.
- Register the domain. Keep renewal pricing and the desired top-level domain in your annual budget.
- Deploy Ghost. Use a supported Ghost image or installation method from your VPS provider, then complete the administrator setup.
- Connect DNS. Create the records that point the domain to the server and allow time for propagation.
- Enable HTTPS. Confirm that the public site and administrator area use a valid SSL certificate before publishing.
- Decide on email. If you will send newsletters, provision a delivery service and verify the sending domain; otherwise, do not add that recurring cost prematurely.
- Set the backup policy. Pick weekly or daily coverage based on how much recent work you could afford to lose, and store copies independently of the VPS.
- Test recovery and maintenance. Record update steps, check available disk and memory, and perform a restore test before the site becomes business-critical.
Self-hosted Ghost versus Ghost(Pro)
The right choice depends on total cost, not the VPS line alone. Ghost(Pro) is managed; self-hosting trades some convenience for direct control.

| Updates, SSL and backups | You arrange and verify them. | Ghost’s managed offering includes managed updates, backups, CDN and SSL. |
| Control | Direct SSH and database access, with the ability to modify the core. | Less infrastructure control in exchange for less maintenance. |
| Operational time | Installation, patching, monitoring and recovery are your responsibility. | Most routine operations are handled for you. |
| Scale economics | Can be cheaper for lightweight blogs; add-on services and labor raise the total. | May be cheaper overall for heavy users who would otherwise assemble several services. |
Ghost’s hosting documentation summarizes the trade-off this way: For heavy users of Ghost, self-hosting generally works out to be more expensive vs Ghost(Pro), but for lightweight blogs it can be cheaper.
Ghost Foundation, accessed in 2026.
How to decide whether self-hosting is cheaper
Build two monthly totals instead of comparing a VPS with a managed-plan sticker price:
- Add the VPS, domain renewal averaged per month, email, backups, analytics, CDN/WAF and any image tooling.
- Estimate the hours you will spend on installation, updates, troubleshooting, monitoring and recovery.
- Assign a realistic value to those hours, even if you do the work personally.
- Compare the resulting total with the Ghost(Pro) plan that supplies the capabilities you actually need.
Self-hosting tends to win when the publication is light, you are comfortable administering a server and you can operate without several paid add-ons. Managed hosting becomes more compelling when downtime is costly, newsletters are central, traffic is heavy or you would otherwise pay for multiple operational services.
Ways to keep a self-hosted bill under control
- Start with a 1 GiB plan only when traffic and workload are genuinely small; move to 2 GiB before memory pressure causes failures.
- Do not buy newsletter delivery until you have a newsletter to send, but budget it before promising email subscriptions.
- Use a backup schedule that matches your publishing frequency instead of paying for daily copies that you will never retain or test.
- Defer hosted analytics, image editing and CDN/WAF until a clear reporting, workflow or traffic requirement appears.
- Keep a written recovery procedure and test it; an untested backup can create expensive emergency work.
- Review renewal prices annually for the domain and every service, since introductory rates may not recur.
Bottom line for 2026
For a small Ghost blog, budget roughly $6–$12 per month for the VPS, a separate annual domain registration and the value of your maintenance time. The 1 GiB example is the lowest-cost practical starting point; the 2 GiB example gives more headroom and matches the memory size used to build and test DigitalOcean’s Ghost image. Newsletter delivery, backups, analytics, CDN/WAF and image services can add $15, $5, $10, $20 and $12 per month respectively at Ghost Foundation’s indicative starting figures. Once those services and operational work are included, self-hosting may cost more than a managed plan even though Ghost itself is open source.
