A WordPress ecommerce site can cost anywhere from roughly $300 a year for a lean do-it-yourself launch to $10,000 or more for a custom, high-traffic build. WooCommerce itself is free, but a functioning store still needs hosting, a domain, payment processing, design, extensions, security and ongoing maintenance. The right 2026 budget depends on your catalog, traffic, integrations and how much work you do yourself.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
What you are actually paying for
“WordPress ecommerce” is not one product with one price. WordPress is the content-management system, while WooCommerce supplies the store features such as products, carts, checkout and order management. WooCommerce is free to download and has no monthly platform subscription or revenue share. Your total cost comes from the services and labor around it.

Three realistic budget scenarios
Lean DIY launch
A solo operator can keep cash spending low by using WooCommerce core, a free theme, inexpensive hosting and only essential extensions. Using the illustrative $20-per-month managed-hosting example and a $15 annual domain, infrastructure would be about $255 in the first year before payment fees. A shared-hosting promotion could be less, but renewal pricing and performance limits need checking.
Add any paid extension at its actual annual license price. One $29 extension would bring that example to about $284; one $299 extension would bring it to about $554. Those are arithmetic illustrations, not a complete quote: payment fees and the owner’s setup time remain outside the totals. The practical cost is often the hours spent configuring products, taxes, shipping, checkout emails, analytics, backups and updates.
Small-business store with professional help
A growing business commonly chooses managed hosting, a premium theme or page builder, several paid extensions and help with configuration. If hosting is budgeted at $25–$100 per month, annual hosting is $300–$1,200. Add roughly $15 for the domain and three extensions at $29–$299 each, or $87–$897 annually. Before labor and transaction fees, that produces an illustrative software-and-infrastructure range of about $402–$2,112.
Developer time can dominate the launch budget. At the cited $25–$49 hourly range, 20 hours of setup is $500–$980; 80 hours is $2,000–$3,920. Actual invoices may be higher when a specialist handles branding, copy, photography, migration, custom checkout logic or project management.

Custom or high-traffic store
Custom work may include a bespoke user experience, a product configurator, marketplace or ERP connections, subscription logic, a large catalog migration, search tuning, staging, monitoring and load testing. A 2026 industry guide says custom ecommerce projects often cost less than $10,000, while complex or high-traffic projects run higher. Treat that as a starting range, not a ceiling.
Request a written scope that lists templates, integrations, data cleanup, accessibility, browser support, acceptance testing, launch support and post-launch warranties. Otherwise, “custom store” can conceal expensive work that appears only after development starts.
How to build your own 2026 budget
- Define the store’s first release. Count products, variants, customer types, shipping zones, tax jurisdictions, currencies and sales channels. Separate launch requirements from later enhancements.
- Choose a hosting tier. Use the $25–$350 monthly WooCommerce range as a planning envelope. A low-traffic catalog may fit near the bottom; simultaneous shoppers, complex filters, large images and intensive integrations push you upward.
- Record recurring licenses. List each theme, page builder and extension, its annual price, renewal date and site limit. Do not treat a first-year discount as the long-term cost.
- Estimate payment costs separately. Apply the processor’s published transaction, currency-conversion, refund and dispute charges to your expected order volume. WooCommerce’s free core does not remove these fees.
- Price implementation labor. Estimate hours for setup, design, product entry, migration, integration, testing and training. Multiply by the contractor’s rate, then reserve time for revisions and launch fixes.
- Add operating labor. Budget monthly time or a service retainer for updates, backups, security alerts, content changes, failed payments and customer-facing issues.
- Model a busy month. Confirm that hosting, object caching, database capacity, backups and support remain adequate during promotions or seasonal peaks.
- Keep a contingency. Existing plugins, messy product data, tax exceptions and integration changes are common sources of overruns. Keep contingency money outside the quoted build price.
Hosting: the largest recurring infrastructure decision
Shared hosting can be appropriate for a small test store, and published examples are around $5 per month. It usually provides fewer resources and less specialized support. Managed ecommerce hosting examples start at $50 or more per month and may bundle staging, backups, caching, security monitoring and support.
WooCommerce’s 2026 guidance places most stores at $25–$350 per month, scaling with traffic and performance needs. Ask prospective hosts these questions before buying:

- What CPU, memory, PHP-worker and database limits apply?
- Is a content-delivery network included or extra?
- Who responds when checkout fails, and what support response time is promised?
- What is the renewal price after the introductory term?
A cheap plan that repeatedly slows checkout can cost more in abandoned orders and emergency troubleshooting than a higher tier.
Extensions, themes and the “free” software trap
Free WooCommerce core is useful, but most stores need additional capabilities. WooCommerce lists $29–$299 per year per extension. Subscriptions, memberships, advanced shipping, tax automation, product feeds, reservations, search and marketing automations are common examples.
Audit every extension for four costs: license renewal, compatibility testing, performance impact and the labor required when it conflicts with another plugin. A $49 license can become expensive if it adds hours of debugging each update. Conversely, a paid extension may be cheaper than commissioning and maintaining an equivalent custom feature.
Free themes and plugins also have a cost in review time and risk. Check update history, support quality, documentation, accessibility and whether the developer releases security fixes. Keep the active plugin count as small as the store’s requirements allow.

Payments, taxes and other variable charges
Payment processing is not included in WooCommerce’s free price. Fees vary by provider and geography and may include a percentage, a fixed amount, currency conversion, refunds and chargeback handling. Build a payment-fee line into every sales forecast rather than treating it as a development expense.
Tax and shipping can create extension and configuration costs even when the rates themselves are not software fees. Multiple jurisdictions, exemptions, pickup options, dimensional shipping and split shipments require careful testing. Confirm who maintains tax tables and shipping rules after launch.

Freelancer
A freelancer can be economical for a defined store with standard themes and integrations. The cited 2026 rate of $25–$49 per hour provides a rough benchmark, not a guaranteed market rate. Ask for examples of comparable WooCommerce work, references, a milestone schedule, source-code ownership and a clear hourly or fixed-price change process.
Agency
An agency is better suited to multiple workstreams such as brand design, UX research, migration, custom development, analytics and ongoing support. You pay for project management and a broader team, but you may gain continuity and documented processes. Require named deliverables, acceptance criteria, accessibility expectations, security responsibilities and support terms.

DIY with targeted help
Many owners configure products and content themselves, then buy a limited block of expert hours for hosting, payment setup, performance and launch review. This can reduce cash cost while avoiding high-risk mistakes in checkout, backups and security.
Maintenance and security after launch
A store is not finished when its homepage goes live. Ongoing work includes WordPress, WooCommerce and extension updates; malware and uptime monitoring; backup verification; broken-link and checkout tests; product and pricing changes; image optimization; analytics review; and compatibility fixes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDecide who performs each task and how quickly a failed update is rolled back. Keep at least one recoverable backup outside the production server, test restoration periodically and use staging for major changes. Security also depends on unique administrator accounts, multi-factor authentication where available, least-privilege access and prompt removal of abandoned plugins.
Common budgeting mistakes
- Counting only the free core: hosting, domains, extensions and payment fees are still mandatory.
- Using a promotional price as a forecast: renewal rates can be materially different.
- Ignoring owner time: product entry, support and updates have an opportunity cost even when no invoice is issued.
- Under-scoping data migration: inconsistent SKUs, images, attributes and customer records require cleanup.
- Leaving performance until launch: large catalogs and third-party scripts are harder to fix after traffic arrives.
- Skipping a maintenance plan: an unsupported plugin can turn a small saving into emergency developer work or downtime.
- Comparing unlike quotes: verify whether each proposal includes design, copy, testing, training, hosting, licenses and post-launch support.
A practical decision rule
Choose the lean DIY route when your catalog and integrations are simple, traffic is predictable and you can handle routine administration. Pay for professional setup when checkout, shipping, taxes or migration are business-critical and mistakes would be costly. Commission custom development when standard extensions cannot meet a documented requirement or when scale and integration reliability justify the investment.
For 2026 planning, put every cost into a 12-month spreadsheet: hosting and domain renewals, each license, expected payment fees, one-time labor, monthly maintenance and a contingency reserve. That view is more reliable than any single “average WordPress store” price because it reflects the decisions that actually determine your bill.
