A basic cloud VM continuously encoding and sending one stream to YouTube can cost about $18.50 in compute for a 30-day planning month, using Google Cloud’s published g1-small on-demand rate. That is not an all-in operating budget: disk, other resources, taxes, support and redundancy are additional, and the example VM may not suit your encoder workload. Google Cloud lists transfer from a VM to YouTube as no charge, so don’t automatically add ordinary internet egress charges to that specific route.
What the $18.50 estimate includes—and excludes
Google Cloud lists its g1-small VM at $0.0257 per hour on demand. Multiplying that rate by 720 hours, a 30-day planning month, gives $18.504, or about $18.50 in VM compute. The provider says pricing varies by region and zone. This is a derived estimate for one compute line item, not a published monthly package price or a guarantee that the VM can run your stream reliably. See Google Cloud’s general-purpose VM pricing.
The estimate excludes disk storage and any other billed resources, as well as taxes, support and redundancy. The available price information does not establish whether g1-small has enough capacity for a particular encoder, media pipeline or reliability target. Check the selected region and configuration in the provider’s pricing calculator, then trial the actual workload before committing to a design.
Why sending a stream to YouTube is different from delivering video to viewers
For a 24/7 YouTube channel, the usual cloud-server arrangement is one encoder VM sending one live ingest stream to YouTube. YouTube then handles distribution to viewers and says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats. The VM is not sending a separate copy to every person watching, so audience size does not multiply the source VM’s outgoing stream traffic in this architecture. Google Cloud’s network pricing lists transfer from a VM to specified Google products, including YouTube, as no charge. This applies to that stated route; it does not mean all internet egress or all associated resources are free. Check current network pricing for the exact configuration and traffic path before budgeting. Google Cloud network pricing.
A different architecture—one that independently encodes, packages and distributes a stream to viewers—can have substantial delivery charges tied to audience traffic. AWS estimates $69.74 for a one-hour 540p event with approximately 1,000 viewers: $2.50 for encoding and packaging and $67.24 for 791 GB of CloudFront distribution. AWS bases that example on viewers consuming the highest bitrate and its stated regional and service assumptions. Choose an encoder profile before sizing the VM
The VM’s suitability depends on what the encoder must do. A continuous stream of still artwork and audio can have different compute needs from one encoding animated or high-resolution video. Specify the media pipeline and target output profile, and verify performance under a trial deployment rather than treating a low hourly price as evidence of adequate capacity.
YouTube’s current help page recommends RTMPS (and lists RTMP as a supported protocol). For H.264, its recommended video bitrates are 3 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. These are YouTube encoder settings, not a complete cloud-server specification. Build a realistic monthly budget
- Compute: Start with the cost of the VM configuration you plan to test. The g1-small calculation above is a narrow Google Cloud example, not a workload recommendation.
- Storage and supporting resources: Add disk and any other resources your setup requires; they are outside the compute estimate.
- Network: For the cited Google Cloud VM-to-YouTube route, Google lists transfer as no charge. Do not generalize that to other destinations or network traffic.
- Reliability: A single VM and a redundant design are different budgets. Include backup or failover resources if your required resilience calls for them.
- Region and operating needs: Prices can vary by region and zone. Account for any required monitoring and support, and verify the current configuration before deployment.
AWS Lightsail advertises bundle tiers from $7, but that headline alone does not establish which plan has suitable resources for continuous encoding or what its transfer allowance means for your use.
