How Much Does It Cost to Run a Telegram Bot in 2026?

Telegram does not normally charge to use its Bot API. In 2026, hosting is the main expense: simple bots often cost $5–15 monthly, database bots $15–50, and AI bots $50–300, with optional paid broadcasts priced at 0.1 Telegram Stars per delivered message above 30 messages per second.

Most Telegram bots cost nothing on Telegram’s side and about $5–15 per month to host. A bot that stores user data commonly lands around $15–50 monthly, while an AI bot can reach $50–300 or more because model usage—not Telegram—becomes the largest bill. Large broadcast campaigns are a special case: Telegram allows 30 messages per second free by default, then charges 0.1 Telegram Stars for each successfully delivered message sent above that rate when paid broadcasts are enabled.

Your actual total depends on four variables: hosting, database and storage needs, external API usage, and whether you need to send messages faster than Telegram’s free broadcast limit. The figures below separate Telegram charges from infrastructure costs so you can build a realistic 2026 budget.

What you pay Telegram

Standard Bot API use is free

Telegram does not apply a standard monthly subscription or per-message fee to ordinary Bot API calls. Receiving updates, replying to chats, handling commands, and sending routine notifications do not create a Telegram invoice. You still need to pay for the server or platform that runs your code, but Telegram itself is normally free.

That free service has rate limits. Telegram’s Bot API documentation and Bots FAQ describe a default broadcast capacity of roughly 30 messages per second for a bot. Sending faster can produce HTTP 429 errors. The limits are designed to protect the service, not to meter normal small-bot usage.

Per-chat limits still apply

  • In a single chat, the FAQ advises sending no more than about one message per second.
  • In groups, the guidance is about 20 messages per minute.
  • Across all chats, the normal broadcast ceiling is roughly 30 messages per second.

These are operational limits rather than prices. A bot can be free to use but still fail if its queue ignores the limits. Add a queue, exponential backoff, and retry handling before increasing server capacity.

Paid broadcasts are optional

Telegram offers a paid-broadcast mode that raises the ceiling to as many as 1,000 messages per second. Messages above the free 30-per-second rate cost 0.1 Telegram Stars each. Telegram deducts Stars from the bot’s balance, and only successfully delivered messages are charged. Failed requests and messages that were not delivered should not consume Stars.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bot API exposes this option through the allow_paid_broadcast parameter on send methods. The changelog dates that parameter to October 31, 2024. You enable the capability in @BotFather, then set the parameter in the relevant send request after your bot is eligible and funded.

How the Stars math works

The charge applies to the portion sent above the free rate during a broadcast window, not to every message your bot sends all day. For example, if you deliver 100,000 messages in a concentrated burst and use paid broadcasts, roughly 3,000 messages fit within 30 messages per second over the first 100 seconds. About 97,000 messages would be above that free capacity, producing a theoretical charge of 9,700 Stars (97,000 × 0.1), assuming every one of those messages is delivered and the burst stays within the paid limit.

You can avoid that Stars expense by spreading the same campaign over a longer period. Telegram’s FAQ suggests windows such as eight to 12 hours. A queue that deliberately stays at or below the free rate costs no Stars, although recipients receive the campaign more slowly.

Eligibility information is inconsistent

Telegram’s published material currently gives two different thresholds. The Bots FAQ says a bot needs at least 100,000 Stars and 100,000 monthly active users, while the paid-broadcast section of the Bot API says at least 10,000 Stars. The FAQ appears to have older metadata, but its age could not be confirmed from the available documentation. Treat neither number as guaranteed: check the current eligibility message in @BotFather and the live Bot API documentation immediately before planning a large send.

Hosting is usually the main monthly expense

A Telegram bot must run somewhere continuously if it needs to answer users or process scheduled jobs. For a small bot, the compute requirement is modest; a low-end virtual private server (VPS) is often enough. Secondary 2026 pricing guides put entry VPS plans at roughly $4–6 per month, although prices vary by region, billing term, tax, and included resources.

Example plan cited in 2026 comparisons Advertised monthly price Important qualification
Hetzner CX11 About $4.50 Secondary-guide figure; verify current regional pricing and tax.
DigitalOcean basic droplet About $6 Secondary-guide figure; plan specifications and billing can change.
AWS EC2 t3.small About $15 Secondary-guide estimate; storage, data transfer, and region can add cost.

Another directory lists some entry plans at $3–4 while describing a different provider’s starting price as $6, so there is no single universal “cheapest VPS” price. Check the provider’s own calculator for your region and whether IPv4, backups, snapshots, and bandwidth are included.

What a small VPS can run

A notification bot, moderation helper, or simple command bot can often run on one small instance with a few hundred megabytes of memory to 1 GB, provided the code is efficient. The VPS normally hosts the bot process and, for a very small project, a lightweight database. You remain responsible for operating-system updates, firewall rules, process restarts, logs, backups, and monitoring.

Choosing a larger server does not remove Telegram’s rate limits. More CPU helps when your code performs heavy parsing or image work, but it does not permit unlimited Bot API requests.

Free tiers and serverless hosting

Free tiers are useful for testing

Free hosting can reduce the cash cost to zero while you prototype. One 2026 comparison lists Railway’s free tier as 500 hours per month—roughly 16 hours per day—and estimates about $5 per month for continuous use. That hour allowance is not enough for a process that must stay online 24/7, and free services may stop or sleep an inactive application.

Oracle Cloud’s Always Free offering is also listed as an option, but availability, account approval, quotas, and regional capacity can vary. “Always free” should be treated as a quota with conditions rather than a promise that every workload will remain free forever.

When serverless makes sense

Serverless platforms such as Vercel, Netlify, and Cloudflare Workers can handle low-traffic webhook bots without a permanently running machine. They are attractive when requests are sporadic and the platform’s free invocation quota covers your volume. Cold starts, execution-time limits, outbound-network restrictions, and limited background processing can make them unsuitable for long polling, media conversion, large queues, or scheduled jobs.

If you use webhooks, Telegram sends updates to an HTTPS endpoint and the function can respond on demand. If you use long polling, your process needs a continuously running connection, which generally favors a VPS or an always-on application plan.

Bot workload Typical monthly estimate What normally drives the cost
Simple notification bot About $6 Small always-on host with little or no persistent data.
Basic interactive bot $5–15 VPS or paid application tier, logs, and modest bandwidth.
Bot with a database $15–50 Database service or larger VPS, backups, and stored user records.
AI-powered bot $50–300 Model API calls usually dominate; hosting may remain $5–10.
High-traffic bot with 10,000 or more daily active users $100–500 Multiple workers, database scaling, monitoring, media storage, and outbound traffic.

Confidence is lower for the AI and high-traffic bands because they depend on message length, model choice, caching, concurrency, and retention. They should be treated as budgeting envelopes rather than quotes.

Database, storage, and external API costs

Adding a database

A bot that only forwards a message can use no persistent database. The moment you need user preferences, conversation state, subscriptions, inventory, moderation history, or scheduled jobs, you need durable storage. Running a small database on the same VPS can keep an early project near the lower end of the $15–50 range, but it creates a single failure domain. A managed database costs more but can provide automated backups, access controls, and easier upgrades.

Budget for backups separately. A database snapshot stored on the same machine will not protect you from a disk failure or account problem; keep at least one copy outside the primary host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Files and media

Photos, videos, voice messages, and documents can exceed database storage quickly. Use object storage for large files and keep only identifiers and metadata in your database. Check both storage and download (egress) pricing. A bot with little text traffic can become expensive if it repeatedly downloads and retransmits large videos.

AI model APIs

For an AI bot, the model vendor’s token or request price generally overtakes hosting. One secondary example estimates a $5–10 VPS plus about $3 per month for a small model handling 5,000 messages, but model pricing was not verified against vendor pricing pages and larger prompts or responses can cost far more. Before launch, record average input and output tokens, expected daily messages, retries, and the percentage of chats that require a model call.

  • Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
  • Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
  • Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
  • Use conversation-window limits so old messages do not inflate every prompt.
  • Cache repeated answers and classify simple commands without calling a model.
  • Set vendor spending caps and alert thresholds.
  • Store model responses only when retention is necessary.

A practical way to calculate your own budget

  1. Count active workloads. Estimate daily users, messages per user, peak simultaneous chats, scheduled tasks, and the largest broadcast you expect.
  2. Choose the delivery method. Webhooks suit event-driven, low-traffic bots; long polling needs an always-on process. Your choice determines which hosting tiers are practical.
  3. Price the smallest reliable host. Start with the roughly $4–6 VPS band for a simple bot, then add memory or a second worker only when measurements show a need.
  4. Add durable services. Include a database, object storage, backups, monitoring, and log retention if your bot cannot lose state.
  5. Model external calls. Multiply expected requests by the provider’s current per-request or token price. Include retries, moderation checks, payment lookups, and other calls that occur around the main response.
  6. Test broadcast timing. If you can spread a campaign over eight to 12 hours, plan for zero Stars. If you require a burst above 30 messages per second, estimate paid messages at 0.1 Stars each and confirm eligibility first.
  7. Add a contingency. Reserve room for taxes, currency conversion, data transfer, sudden traffic, and a replacement host or backup restore.

Three example budgets

Personal notification bot

A bot that posts a few alerts, has no database, and uses a webhook can fit on a $5–6 always-on host. Telegram usage remains free, so the practical budget is about $6 per month plus any optional backup. If a free tier sleeps or caps hours, it is better for development than for alerts people depend on.

Small community bot with state

A moderation or game-community bot that remembers settings and schedules jobs may need a $6–15 application host, a database, and backups. A realistic starting envelope is $15–50 per month. Keep media outside the database and watch disk and bandwidth growth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AI support or game-guide bot

Suppose hosting costs $5–10 and the model API costs $3 for a very small 5,000-message workload. That illustrative workload could remain near $10–15, but usage can rise rapidly as prompts become longer, users send more messages, or you select a more capable model. The broader secondary estimate of $50–300 per month is a safer planning range for an AI bot with meaningful traffic.

Ways to keep the bill under control

  • Stay at or below 30 broadcast messages per second with a queue instead of buying Stars.
  • Use webhooks and scale on demand when the bot does not need a permanent polling process.
  • Separate development, staging, and production so test loops do not consume paid model calls.
  • Expire old logs and media according to a documented retention period.
  • Set CPU, memory, database, storage, and model-spend alerts before inviting users.
  • Measure response latency and queue depth; scaling based on actual bottlenecks is cheaper than buying capacity in advance.

Costs people often overlook

Taxes and currency conversion can make a displayed monthly price higher at checkout. Backups, static IP addresses, snapshots, managed databases, monitoring, email or SMS integrations, and outbound bandwidth may be billed separately. Payment processors also charge their own fees when your bot sells goods or services; rates differ by provider and country, so verify them directly rather than assuming Telegram absorbs those costs.

Telegram’s separate Gateway API for verification codes is another service with its own pricing model. Do not include it in an ordinary bot budget unless your project actually sends verification codes through that API.

Bottom line for 2026

For most small Telegram bots, plan on roughly $5–15 per month, with Telegram’s standard Bot API adding no recurring fee. Add a database and backups and the practical range becomes about $15–50. Once an AI model, heavy media processing, or thousands of daily active users enter the design, external APIs and infrastructure can push the total to $50–300 or $100–500 respectively. Paid broadcasts are an exception: they are optional, charged in Telegram Stars at 0.1 per successfully delivered message above the free 30-per-second rate, and avoidable when you can spread delivery over a longer window.
