30% is the commonly cited PlayStation Store and console benchmark, but Sony’s public materials do not confirm one universal current rate for every game, purchase, territory, or developer agreement. The figure appears in a court order describing a lawsuit allegation and in Epic’s general description of current-console fees—not in a published Sony commission schedule.
What does “Sony’s cut” mean?
Usually, the question refers to a platform commission on a digital purchase made through the PlayStation Store. That is different from royalties negotiated between a developer and publisher, revenue from a physical retail sale, or Sony’s own reported business mix.

Sony defines Digital Software as full-game downloads of first- and third-party titles through PlayStation Store. Add-On Content covers other digital content sold there, including in-game currency, items, and expansion packs. Those categories identify types of Store sales; they do not publish the commission charged on them. Sony FY25 Q3 Supplemental Information
What supports the 30% figure?
A court order recounts a lawsuit allegation
A 2022 federal court order in Caccuri v. Sony says the complaint alleged that Sony took a 30% cut of the price of 23 games sold on PlayStation Store. That passage records what plaintiffs alleged; it is not a judicial finding establishing Sony’s current rate for all sales. Read the court order.

Epic describes current-console fees generally
Epic’s Fortnite documentation describes fees ranging from 12% on Epic Games Store to 30% on current consoles, and says the fees currently average 26% for its calculation. This is Epic’s cross-platform context, not a Sony-specific rate card or confirmation of the terms of any particular PlayStation agreement. Epic’s in-island transactions overview.
Sony does not publish a complete commission schedule in the cited materials
Sony’s public investor reports describe sales categories and business results, while its US PlayStation Terms of Service cover consumer use and purchases. The materials reviewed do not state a developer commission percentage. Sony Corporate Report 2025 · US PlayStation Terms of Service

Are royalties the same as the Store commission?
No. Royalties or other payments between companies depend on the relevant contract and revenue stream. A PlayStation Global Developer and Publisher Agreement filed with the SEC includes a clause requiring good-faith negotiations over a royalty, if any, on certain additional revenue received or credited to the publisher, at a rate the parties agree. That clause does not establish the standard commission on a PlayStation Store game sale. SEC-filed agreement.

No. Sony’s FY2024 Game & Network Services segment sales breakdown lists Hardware at 24%, Physical Software at 3%, Digital Software at 20%, Add-On Content at 29%, Network Services at 14%, and Other at 10%. These are shares of segment sales to external customers—not the portion Sony retains from an individual game or add-on transaction. Sony Corporate Report 2025.

How to interpret a claimed PlayStation percentage
- Check the channel: a PlayStation Store purchase is not the same as a physical retail sale.
- Check the transaction: a full-game download, add-on, and other publisher revenue may be treated differently.
- Check the evidence: a public contract clause, a lawsuit allegation, a cross-platform description, and an investor-report category establish different things.
- Check the scope: a rate may depend on the title, agreement, territory, time period, and type of transaction.
