How Much RAM Do You Need for a Gaming PC in 2026: 16 GB, 32 GB, or 64 GB?

For most new gaming PCs, 32 GB of RAM is the sensible target. Sixteen gigabytes remains enough for many games when you are not running a heavy background workload. Sixty-four gigabytes is an optional buffer for demanding multitasking, content creation, mods, or another application that genuinely uses it—not a general gaming requirement established by current testing.

The right capacity depends on the games and presets you play, what runs alongside them, and whether your motherboard and CPU support the kit you plan to install. More RAM by itself does not guarantee higher frame rates.

The quick answer: choose by capacity and workload

Capacity Best fit What the available evidence shows
16 GB Many current games, ordinary background apps, and an upgrade-conscious build TechSpot found similar performance at 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB in several tested titles. The result varies by game and test setup.
32 GB Most new gaming builds, high settings, heavier multitasking, and longer upgrade headroom Some high-end game configurations specify 32 GB. It provides capacity headroom without claiming an automatic FPS gain.
64 GB Gaming alongside demanding creative software, very large modded environments, streaming plus other heavy tools, or a known memory-hungry workload The cited testing does not establish a general gaming-performance advantage over 32 GB.

Do not use Windows’ memory minimum as a gaming recommendation. Microsoft lists 4 GB or greater for Windows 11 installation or upgrade; a game, browser, voice chat, and launcher all need additional working memory.

Why RAM capacity matters in games

System RAM holds the game, the operating system, and the applications that remain active while you play. A game can run acceptably at a given capacity when it has enough room for its own data and for ordinary background activity. Add a browser with many tabs, voice chat, recording or streaming software, mods, or a creative application, and the same game may have much less spare capacity.

When available memory becomes tight, Windows has to manage data more aggressively. The visible symptom can be hitching or inconsistent frame times rather than a dramatic change in the average frame rate. Capacity therefore affects smoothness and multitasking headroom, while the GPU, CPU, game settings, and drivers still determine much of the frame-rate ceiling. Installing a larger amount does not make a graphics card render frames faster when the game was already comfortable in memory.

What official game requirements actually say

There is no universal “RAM per game” number. Requirements change with the title, resolution, quality preset, ray-tracing options, and target frame rate. The following figures come from Activision’s current requirement page and are game-specific; that page warns that its specifications can change.

Game or configuration Published memory figure How to interpret it
Modern Warfare 4, high-settings multiplayer target of 90 FPS 16 GB recommended A 16 GB recommendation for this particular performance target, not a rule for every mode or preset.
Modern Warfare 4, high-ray-tracing 4K configuration 32 GB The higher capacity is attached to a demanding ray-traced 4K tier.
Black Ops 7, high settings 12 GB recommended Shows that a current game can specify a figure between common 16 GB and 32 GB kit sizes.
Black Ops 7, Competitive/Ultra 4K 16 GB Even a higher preset does not automatically require 32 GB; the title’s own configuration is what matters.

These examples are why you should check the current requirement page for the exact game and preset you intend to use. A “recommended” amount is not necessarily the same as a guaranteed maximum-quality target, and a high-end tier can demand more than the game’s ordinary recommendation.

Is 16 GB enough for gaming?

Often, yes. Sixteen gigabytes remains workable for many players who launch a game without a large collection of other memory-heavy programs. It is also consistent with the 16 GB recommendations listed for specific configurations above.

TechSpot’s controlled tests used one 64 GB DDR5 kit and limited how much memory Windows 11 could address to simulate lower capacities. In examples including Marvel Rivals, Borderlands 4, and The Outer Worlds 2, reported performance was similar at 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB. That does not prove every game behaves the same way, but it does show why a larger number on the box is not an automatic frame-rate upgrade.

The same testing reported notable stutter or frame-time problems at 8 GB in the cited examples. Sixteen gigabytes therefore has a meaningful safety margin over 8 GB, while still leaving less room for simultaneous applications than a 32 GB system.

Choose 16 GB when

  • Your target games list 16 GB or less for the settings you intend to use.
  • You normally close large browser sessions, editing tools, and other heavy applications before playing.
  • Your existing 16 GB system is not showing memory pressure during your normal sessions.
  • The alternative is delaying a more important upgrade, such as a compatible graphics card or storage, and your budget is limited.

Reconsider 16 GB when

  • You stream, record, run a browser with many tabs, use voice chat, and play simultaneously.
  • You use extensive mods or keep creative software open while gaming.
  • You are building a new system and want additional capacity headroom rather than planning another memory upgrade soon.

Why 32 GB is the practical target for a new build

Thirty-two gigabytes is a sensible default because it covers more combinations of games and background work without presenting 64 GB as a universal requirement. It also matches the memory figure for Modern Warfare 4’s high-ray-tracing 4K configuration, while other games may need less.

The recommendation is about headroom, not a promise of higher FPS. If a title already performs identically at 16 GB and 32 GB in your setup, moving to 32 GB will not create frames that the CPU and GPU cannot produce. The benefit is room for the game and your other software to coexist with less risk of pressure as games, launchers, browsers, and mods change over time.

For a desktop, a commonly sold arrangement is a 2×16 GB DDR5 kit. Treat that as a capacity description, not a universal shopping instruction: the memory generation, motherboard, processor, number of slots, and system capacity limits must all match.

When 64 GB is worth considering

Sixty-four gigabytes is an optional capacity for most gaming-focused readers. The cited TechSpot examples did not establish a general performance gain from 64 GB over 32 GB, so buying it solely because a larger number sounds faster is not supported by those tests.

  • Tested Timings: 30-40-40-76
  • Feature Overclock: XMP 3.0 / EXPO overclocking supported
  • Compatibility: Tested across latest DDR5 platforms for reliability on high performance
  • Limited lifetime warranty

Situations that can justify 64 GB

  • You deliberately run a game, streaming or recording software, a browser, voice chat, and other demanding tools together.
  • Your modded games or simulations are known, from your own usage, to consume substantially more memory.
  • You edit video, work with large creative projects, compile software, run virtual machines, or perform another non-gaming task on the same PC.
  • Your platform supports 64 GB and the additional capacity fits your budget after meeting the requirements of the rest of the system.

Situations that do not justify it by themselves

  • A desire for higher average FPS when 16 GB or 32 GB is not full.
  • A Windows 11 installation requirement; Microsoft’s 4 GB figure is an operating-system minimum, not a gaming target.
  • Steam survey popularity. A common configuration is evidence of what surveyed machines have, not proof of what every individual needs.

Does more RAM increase FPS?

Not automatically. If a game and your background tasks fit comfortably in 16 GB, moving to 32 GB or 64 GB may leave frame rates effectively unchanged. TechSpot’s selected tests illustrate that outcome at 16/32/64 GB.

Additional capacity can still improve the experience when the previous amount was causing memory pressure. The improvement may appear as fewer stalls, more consistent frame times, or the ability to keep other applications open. Those are real benefits, but they are different from a guaranteed increase in the GPU-limited average FPS.

Do not confuse system RAM with graphics memory (VRAM). A RAM upgrade cannot substitute for a graphics card with enough VRAM for a particular resolution, texture setting, or ray-tracing workload.

How to decide from your own usage

Use your actual games and applications rather than a generic capacity rule. The sources do not establish a universal percentage or gigabyte threshold at which everyone must upgrade, so observe your system under the workload that matters to you.

  1. List the games and presets. Check each publisher’s current requirements for the resolution, quality level, ray-tracing mode, and frame-rate target you plan to use. Record the highest published memory figure among those configurations.
  2. List what stays open. Include browsers, voice chat, launchers, mods, streaming or recording software, and creative applications. A game-only test and a stream-with-browser session are different workloads.
  3. Measure a normal session. In Windows 11, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, choose Performance, then Memory. Start the game and your usual background tools, play long enough to reproduce the problem, and observe whether memory use and frame-time behavior change when applications are closed. This is an observation method, not a universal pass/fail threshold.
  4. Separate capacity from other bottlenecks. If memory use is comfortable but the GPU or CPU is fully occupied, adding RAM is unlikely to solve the frame-rate limit. If stutter disappears when heavy background programs are closed, additional capacity may provide useful headroom.
  5. Compare the cost of the complete upgrade. Use the price of a compatible kit at the time you buy. No fixed price premium makes one capacity the best value in every region or month.

Match the memory generation

Confirm whether the motherboard and processor support DDR4, DDR5, or another generation. A DDR5 kit cannot be assumed to work in a DDR4 board, and the reverse is also true. The kit’s advertised capacity is irrelevant if its generation is incompatible.

  • Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
  • Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
  • Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.

Check motherboard and CPU limits

Verify the maximum supported capacity, supported speeds, and the number of DIMM slots in the motherboard and CPU documentation. An individual system may have limits that differ from the headline capacity sold in a kit.

Count free slots and plan the arrangement

Record how many slots are occupied and how many remain. A 2×16 GB kit is a different upgrade path from adding modules to an existing kit. Follow the motherboard’s recommended slot arrangement and use matched modules where possible; do not assume that any two kits will behave identically together.

Decide whether you are replacing or expanding

Replacing an older kit with a matched 32 GB or 64 GB set can be simpler than mixing capacities. Expanding may be reasonable when the existing modules are supported, but confirm the resulting total, slot population, and firmware support first.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying from the Windows minimum: 4 GB is an installation or upgrade minimum for Windows 11, not enough guidance for a modern gaming workload.
  • Using one game’s requirement as a universal rule: Black Ops 7 and Modern Warfare 4 specify different amounts for different presets.
  • Assuming capacity equals speed: More gigabytes do not automatically raise FPS.
  • Ignoring background software: The same 16 GB system can feel different when a browser, recorder, mods, and voice chat are running.
  • Trusting survey shares as recommendations: Tom’s Hardware reported that the Steam Hardware Survey for September 2026 showed 42.22% of surveyed units with 32 GB and 37.82% with 16 GB. Those are surveyed-unit shares, not performance requirements or a census of all gamers.
  • Skipping compatibility checks: Generation, motherboard and CPU support, free slots, module arrangement, and total capacity limits all matter.

Which capacity fits these common scenarios?

Scenario Practical starting point Reason
Playing current games with ordinary background apps 16 GB can be sufficient; 32 GB for extra headroom Several tested games showed similar performance at 16 GB and 32 GB, but workload and title still matter.
New gaming desktop intended to last through changing game requirements 32 GB Balances broad compatibility and multitasking room without treating 64 GB as mandatory.
High-ray-tracing 4K configuration in Modern Warfare 4 32 GB This is the amount listed for that specific Activision configuration.
Gaming while streaming, recording, browsing heavily, or creating content 32 GB first; 64 GB if measurement shows the workload needs it Extra capacity is useful as headroom, but the decision should follow observed memory pressure.
Replacing an 8 GB system that stutters At least 16 GB, subject to platform compatibility TechSpot’s cited examples showed notable stutter or frame-time problems at 8 GB.

Bottom line

Choose 32 GB for most new gaming PCs when the platform and budget support it. Choose 16 GB when your games and background workload fit comfortably and you need to control the build cost. Choose 64 GB for a measured multitasking, modding, or content-creation need—not because it guarantees more FPS. Check the exact game presets, observe your own memory use, and verify every compatibility detail before ordering.
