Upload a long video when people should watch a finished recording on demand. Choose YouTube Live when the content is meant to be a real-time broadcast, such as a scheduled event with live chat. If by “playlist loop” you mean repeating a playlist in YouTube’s player, that is a viewer playback control—not a livestream. YouTube’s looping instructions cover playback; sending a broadcast requires a separate live-stream workflow.
First, distinguish a playlist loop from a live broadcast
YouTube lets a viewer repeat a video or playlist in the player. That repeats playback for that viewer; it does not send the playlist out as a live channel broadcast. To broadcast repeated material as a livestream, a creator must send a live feed to YouTube through an encoder or another live-streaming workflow. YouTube documents that separately in its encoder setup guide.
Which option fits your goal?
| Option | Choose it when | Key tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Upload one long video | The recording is finished and viewers should be able to start, pause, and return to it whenever they want. | Videos over 15 minutes require account verification. The maximum upload is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever limit is reached first, according to YouTube Help. |
| YouTube Live | The audience should experience a scheduled or ongoing broadcast in real time, potentially with live chat and the context of a live watch page. | Your channel must be eligible to stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream over 12 hours may not be captured; see its archive guidance. |
| Loop a playlist in the YouTube player | A viewer wants a playlist to repeat continuously during playback. | This repeats playback in the player; it does not create a broadcast. |
What changes for viewers?
On-demand access versus an event
An upload is a finished item viewers can play on their own schedule. A livestream creates a real-time event experience; viewers join while it is happening, and the live page can provide chat and event framing. After the event, YouTube says its archive is uploaded by default. You can organize archives and highlight clips into playlists, as described in YouTube’s promotion guidance.
Replay and rewind are not the same thing
With an uploaded video, viewers can return to the on-demand recording. During a livestream, DVR may let viewers pause, rewind, and resume, but YouTube says rewind can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers also cannot seek to a point before the stream began. Check YouTube’s DVR guidance if rewind is important to your audience.

Limits and eligibility to check before choosing Live
Long uploads
YouTube’s stated default duration limit is 15 minutes. To upload longer videos, verify the account. After verification, the maximum upload is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. These are current limits in YouTube Help; older videos may exceed today’s stated duration cap because limits have changed.
Live streams
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Review the current live-stream eligibility guidance before scheduling a broadcast.

Archive and backup
YouTube says livestreams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete replay matters, keep a local recording rather than relying only on the platform archive. YouTube also recommends monitoring audio and video and checking local archive files during an encoder stream. DVR is not a substitute for a preserved master.
How to decide without guessing about reach
- Choose an upload if the work is complete and the priority is dependable on-demand viewing.
- Choose Live if the timing itself matters—such as a premiere-like gathering, scheduled show, or event where viewers may participate in real time.
- Use the player’s playlist loop if you simply want repeated playback for yourself or another viewer.
- Do not assume one format will automatically earn more views, recommendations, watch time, or revenue. Those outcomes depend on the channel, content, audience, and YouTube’s distribution. Test the format that serves your audience, then compare results in YouTube Analytics.
If you choose Live: prepare the broadcast and its replay
- Confirm eligibility. Check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- Set up the stream. Use YouTube’s encoder instructions to create the live stream and connect your encoder. A playlist loop in the player cannot replace this step.
- Promote the event. Share the live link in advance so viewers can plan to join. YouTube recommends advance sharing in its live-stream promotion guidance.
- Monitor and record. Watch audio and video during the broadcast and maintain a local recording if you need a reliable full-length replay. Do not assume a stream lasting more than 12 hours will be archived.
- Organize the replay. After the stream ends, check the archive and arrange it with relevant playlists or highlight clips. Keep the local master if the archive is incomplete or unavailable.
