One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a standard Lunar Client setup, start with 3 GB allocated on an 8 GB PC, 4 GB on a 16 GB PC, and 4–6 GB on a PC with 32 GB or more. Lunar’s current support guide recommends 6 GB for systems with at least 32 GB, but most standard profiles do not need more than that. More allocation does not automatically mean more FPS; too much can cause stutters.
Recommended Lunar Client RAM by system memory
These figures distinguish the RAM installed in your computer from the Java memory limit assigned to Lunar Client. Lunar’s current FPS support guide gives 3 GB for an 8 GB system, 4 GB for a 16 GB system, and 6 GB for systems with 32 GB or more. The smaller-system suggestions below reflect Lunar’s older allocation table and practical headroom for Windows.
| Total system RAM | Starting Lunar allocation | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 4 GB | 1–2 GB | Lunar’s older guide suggested 1 GB. Close other applications and expect limited room for resource packs and multitasking. |
| 6 GB | About 2 GB | Lunar’s older guide suggested 2 GB. Keep memory available for Windows and anything else running. |
| 8 GB | 3 GB | This is Lunar’s current recommendation. Close unnecessary applications, especially on laptops with integrated graphics. |
| 16 GB | 4 GB | This is Lunar’s current recommendation and a sensible default for ordinary Lunar play. |
| 32 GB | 4 GB to start; up to 6 GB if needed | Lunar’s current guide recommends 6 GB for systems with 32 GB or more, but a standard profile may need less. |
| 64 GB or more | 4 GB to start; usually no more than 6 GB for standard Lunar | More installed RAM does not mean a standard profile benefits from a larger allocation. |
Lunar’s current guidance says not to allocate more than half of the computer’s total RAM. It also says heavy resource packs or modpacks can be exceptions to the usual 6 GB ceiling for standard setups. See Lunar’s current FPS and memory guidance.
Why older advice says to stop at 4 GB
Lunar’s older performance article recommends no more than 4 GB, with 1 GB for a 4 GB computer, 2 GB for 6 GB, 3 GB for 8 GB, and 4 GB for 9 GB or more. Its newer support guide gives higher recommendations for 16 GB and 32 GB systems. Treat the older table as dated advice, not as the same current chart: Lunar’s older allocation article.

What Lunar’s RAM allocation means
The allocation is the maximum Java heap available to the Minecraft process; it is not a command for the whole computer to use exactly that amount. Actual game usage varies with the Minecraft version, world, mods, resource pack, and what you are doing.
Rank #2
- Actual memory speed may vary depending on the system, CPU, motherboard, BIOS settings, and supported memory configuration. DDR4 3200MHz modules may operate at lower speeds such as 2933MHz or 2666MHz when supported by the host system. Please check your device specifications and compatibility before purchase.
- Adherence to JEDEC and compliance to RoHS with respect to environmental protection regulation, production and manufacturing
- All new generation product of DRAM module. Strict test and verification procedures are performed for products
- Lifetime warranty and Free technical support
- Installation video is attached in product image. ※Refer to the latest version on the official website. In case of discrepancies, the official website prevails.
- Total system RAM is the installed memory, such as 8 GB or 16 GB.
- Allocated RAM is the heap limit you assign to Minecraft through Lunar.
- Actual process usage is the memory Java and the game are using at a particular moment.
- Other memory use includes Windows, the launcher, drivers, Discord, browsers, capture software, overlays, and Java overhead.
On a laptop with integrated graphics, graphics may also use shared system memory. Raising the Java heap does not create dedicated graphics memory, and it can leave less headroom for the rest of the system.
How to change the allocation in Lunar Client
- Open the Lunar Client Launcher.
- Open the Settings tab.
- Find the allocated-memory or RAM control and set the amount you want to try. The wording or appearance can vary between launcher versions.
- Launch Minecraft again and test under the same conditions: use the same world or server, render distance, resource pack, and mods.
- Keep the change only if it improves stability or resolves a memory problem. If stutters or system sluggishness increase, return to the previous setting or lower it.
Choosing RAM for mods, shaders, and background apps
Standard Lunar, PvP, and vanilla-style play
For ordinary profiles such as PvP, BedWars, SkyWars, or vanilla-style play, start with the table above. A standard profile on a 32 GB or 64 GB PC usually does not need 8–16 GB assigned to Minecraft.

Large modpacks and resource packs
A demanding modpack or high-resolution resource pack may need more heap than a standard profile. Increase the allocation cautiously in small steps, then check whether the game launches, worlds load reliably, and stutters improve. Do not exceed half of total system RAM, and do not assume extra heap will make shaders render faster: GPU capability and graphics memory are often more relevant to shader performance.
Discord, browsers, and recording
Chrome and other browsers, Discord, OBS, NVIDIA recording features, Medal, SteelSeries Moments, Overwolf, and other overlays or launchers consume system resources. If you play or stream with several open, keep more memory available to Windows and those applications rather than assigning it all to Minecraft. Lunar’s FPS troubleshooting guide also identifies background applications and overlays as possible performance factors.

Why too much allocated RAM can cause stutters
Java uses garbage collection to manage its heap. A larger heap gives the game more room, but Lunar warns that excessive allocation can make garbage-collection pauses longer, which can show up as stutters or crashes. If Windows is short of memory, it may also have to move data between RAM and storage, slowing the whole system.
Too little allocation can contribute to out-of-memory crashes or trouble loading a demanding profile; too much can create pauses or system-wide memory pressure. The useful target is enough heap for the workload without depriving Windows and your other applications.

What to do if Lunar will not launch or becomes sluggish
- Close applications you recognize and are not using, particularly browsers, recording tools, and overlays.
- On Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Close only programs you recognize and do not need; do not end important system processes.
- Reopen Lunar Client and lower the allocated-memory setting.
- Launch the game again. If needed, use Lunar’s reset or recommended-memory control if it is available in your launcher version.
- If Minecraft reports an out-of-memory problem after it launches, try a modest increase or reduce the modpack or resource-pack load instead of making a large jump.
Lunar’s launch-failure guidance recommends closing applications and lowering the allocation when memory prevents launch.
When RAM allocation will not fix FPS
More heap is not a general FPS setting. It may help when the game is genuinely running short of memory, but low FPS with plenty of available RAM usually points elsewhere. Check the likely bottleneck rather than repeatedly raising the allocation:
- GPU selection and load: Confirm the game is using the intended graphics processor, especially on a laptop with integrated and dedicated graphics.
- Render distance and shaders: These can heavily affect performance and are not fixed simply by assigning more Java heap.
- CPU limits: Chunk generation and other game work can be CPU-bound.
- Drivers and overlays: Outdated graphics drivers, capture tools, and overlays can contribute to performance issues or conflicts.
- Network or server conditions: Latency and server lag are not solved by changing local RAM allocation.
Lunar’s FPS guide covers graphics configuration, drivers, render settings, background apps, and overlays as other troubleshooting areas.
System RAM is not the same as Lunar allocation
Mojang’s Java Edition system requirements, published July 21, 2026, list 16 GB of system RAM as the recommended target for 1080p at 60 FPS with Fancy settings. That is a whole-computer specification, not a recommendation to assign 16 GB to Lunar. Lunar’s current allocation recommendation for a 16 GB system is 4 GB. Mojang’s stated minimum target is 8 GB with a discrete GPU or 12 GB with integrated graphics; its requirements also refer to newer graphics hardware and Vulkan 1.3, so RAM alone does not establish whether a system will run the game smoothly. See Mojang’s Java Edition system requirements.
JVM arguments are an advanced option
Lunar announced JVM-argument support across standard, Vanilla, Modpack, and Badlion profiles in November 2025: Lunar’s November 2025 announcement. An argument such as -Xmx4G represents a maximum heap setting, but the right configuration depends on the profile and launcher version. For most players, use Lunar’s built-in allocation control first. Avoid copying unverified arguments from forums or videos; if custom arguments prevent launch, undo or remove them.
