The PlayStation 4 has 8 GB of GDDR5 unified system memory. Sony also specified memory bandwidth of 176 GB/s. In other words, the PS4’s RAM is shared system memory built into the console—not a conventional PC memory module.
What kind of memory does the PS4 use?
Sony describes the PS4’s 8 GB as unified system memory and identifies its type as GDDR5. Unified means the console’s system uses a shared memory pool; it is not a separate, user-installed RAM kit like desktop DIMMs. Sony’s February 2013 announcement says the GDDR5 memory provides 176 GB/s of bandwidth. Does every game get all 8 GB?
The 8 GB figure is the console’s advertised system-memory capacity, not a stated allocation for an individual game. Sony’s cited launch specifications do not say how much memory is available to a game or describe an operating-system reservation, so those amounts cannot be inferred from the headline capacity alone.
Can you upgrade the PS4’s RAM?
Sony’s published specification describes unified system memory and does not provide a user RAM-upgrade procedure. It therefore does not support treating the PS4 like a PC whose memory capacity can be increased by adding a module. The launch specification alone does not establish repair or serviceability details.

How does the memory fit into the PS4’s hardware?
Sony’s system overview pairs the memory with an eight-core x86-64 AMD Jaguar CPU and a Radeon-based GPU rated at 1.84 TFLOPS. These are separate hardware specifications: the 176 GB/s memory-bandwidth figure does not, by itself, determine a game’s performance. Sony’s June 2013 PS4 specification
