Nintendo Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, but some of that space is reserved for system use. Game sizes vary by title, so there is no single number that describes the whole library. Check the specific game’s Nintendo eShop listing or physical packaging, and leave room for updates that may increase its storage requirement.

How much space does a Switch 2 game need?

It depends on the game. Nintendo says storage requirements vary by title, and its UK guidance warns that updates can increase the space needed. The clearest way to check is to look up the game’s individual listing in the eShop or check its physical packaging.

For a concrete example, Nintendo’s US listing for STARBITES – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition gives a 20.9 GB storage requirement. The Nintendo Switch version is listed at 10.5 GB. These are figures for those specific editions, not a catalog average or a typical game size. The Switch 2 Edition listing gives a release date of July 14, 2026. See the Nintendo US listing.

Nintendo UK’s digital-games guidance labels its example requirements as current as of July 2026 and notes that updates can raise the amount required. Check Nintendo UK’s storage guidance.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

How many games fit on the console?

Nintendo advertises 256 GB of internal storage, with a portion reserved for system use, so the full 256 GB is not available for games and other downloads. Nintendo’s Switch 2 features page does not state the usable capacity after system reservations.

Because titles vary in size and updates can change their requirements, there is no reliable fixed number of games that will fit. To estimate your own library, check the current listed size of each game you want installed and compare their combined storage needs with the space available on your console.

Do you need a microSD Express card?

Nintendo says no individual game currently requires additional storage space to play. An expansion card is therefore optional as a requirement for playing a game, though it can help if you want more downloaded games installed at the same time. Nintendo’s data-management FAQ.

Consider expansion based on the size of your installed library and how often you want to remove and redownload software. Nintendo recommends using one microSD Express card: software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto one card.

Can you use an old Switch SD card?

No. Switch 2 requires a microSD Express card to store and load digital games; ordinary microSD cards used with the original Switch are not compatible for that purpose. Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB, provided they meet the standard. The first time you use a card, the console needs an internet connection for a system update. Nintendo’s card compatibility guidance and microSD Express FAQ.

Once inserted, a microSD Express card becomes the default location for downloaded software. Downloaded games, software updates and DLC can be stored on it, but save data remains in System Memory.
