For expandable game storage on Nintendo Switch 2, you need a microSD Express card. A conventional microSD UHS-I card—even one that worked in the original Switch—cannot store or load Switch 2 games. Express cards also work in the original Switch, but there they run at conventional microSD speeds.
What’s the difference for Switch 2?
| Question | Conventional microSD UHS-I | microSD Express |
|---|---|---|
| Store or load Switch 2 games | No. It cannot be used for Switch 2 game storage. | Yes. It is the supported expansion-card standard. |
| Maximum supported capacity | Not applicable for Switch 2 game storage. | Up to 2 TB, according to Nintendo’s compatibility guidance. |
| Use with the original Switch | Supported; Nintendo recommends UHS-I compatibility for the original console. | Also usable, but Nintendo says its read/write speed there is equivalent to a conventional microSD card. |
| First use in Switch 2 | Cannot be used as expansion storage for games; screenshots and videos on it can be imported. | Requires an internet-connected system update the first time it is used. |
| What it can hold on Switch 2 | No Switch 2 games or save data. | Downloaded software, software updates, DLC, screenshots, and captured video. Game save data stays in system memory. |
These compatibility and data-handling distinctions come from Nintendo’s compatibility chart and microSD Express support FAQ.
Why UHS-I speed labels don’t make an old card compatible
UHS-I describes a card-bus interface; labels such as U1 and U3 describe speed classes. Neither a high speed-class marking nor an impressive number printed on an ordinary UHS-I card turns it into microSD Express. Nintendo’s requirement is the Express standard itself, identified by the microSD Express designation and mark.
The SD Association lists up to 104 MB/s for the UHS-I SDR104 bus mode. It describes SD Express as using PCIe and NVMe, with interface ceilings that depend on the specification configuration. These are standards-level interface figures, not measured transfer speeds for a particular card in Switch 2. Nintendo says Express provides faster access than previous microSD models and that the faster standard is needed for games to run smoothly, but its cited support information does not publish a console-specific card benchmark. See the SD Association’s bus-speed overview.

What a Switch 2 card can store—and what it cannot
With a microSD Express card inserted, Switch 2 uses it as the default location for downloaded software. It can also hold software updates, DLC, screenshots, and captured video. Screenshots and videos can be moved between system memory and the card.
Game save data is different: Nintendo says it remains in system memory and cannot be copied or saved to a microSD Express card. A card expands space for downloads and media, not for game saves. Nintendo lists Switch 2 internal storage as 256 GB, with some space reserved for system use; its data-management FAQ says no individual game currently requires extra storage to play. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 features page and data-management FAQ.

Can you reuse your old Switch card?
A conventional microSD card from the original Switch cannot store or load games or save data on Switch 2. You can, however, import screenshots and captured videos from that card into Switch 2 system memory. If you want the old card to provide expandable game storage, it does not meet the requirement; choose microSD Express instead.
An Express card can be used in the original Switch too. Nintendo says its read/write speed on that console is equivalent to a conventional microSD card, so buying Express does not create an equivalent speed upgrade for the older system. Nintendo’s guidance on using Express cards with Nintendo Switch covers that cross-generation use.

Choosing a card and setting it up
Check the format and capacity
Look for a card specifically marked microSD Express and confirm its capacity is no more than Nintendo’s supported 2 TB maximum. A conventional microSD or UHS-I card is not a substitute, regardless of its U1/U3 rating or advertised speed. Nintendo says any card meeting the microSD Express standard within the supported capacity can be used.
Nintendo Japan lists licensed SanDisk and Samsung microSD Express examples, including 256 GB cards and a 512 GB SanDisk card. Those are named examples, not a performance ranking; check the exact model and current availability on Nintendo Japan’s accessories page.

Prepare for first use and future replacement
- Insert the microSD Express card into Switch 2.
- For the card’s first use in that console, connect to the internet and install the required system update.
- Use one Express card where possible. Nintendo recommends a single card; if you replace it with a larger one, copy the data across. Software downloaded across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto one card.
The update and card-management requirements are set out in Nintendo’s microSD Express FAQ.
