There is no confirmed storage capacity or expansion standard for an unspecified next-generation console, so no single terabyte figure can be recommended reliably. Size for the games you want installed and playable at the same time, then decide whether you are willing to add compatible storage, archive games, or delete and redownload titles.
Start with the games you want installed at once
Make a short list of the large games you regularly play, then add smaller titles and any captures or other content you want to keep available. Leave room for updates and games you install later. This estimates the capacity your library needs without assuming that every game takes the same amount of space.
SanDisk’s current undated guidance, accessed in 2026, estimates that a 2 TB SSD can hold 40–50 games, based on an average game size of 36 GB; SanDisk says the result varies with file size and other factors. It describes some smaller games as taking a few gigabytes, many AAA games as exceeding 50 GB, and some games with updates and expansions as reaching 100 GB or more. Install sizes also change with updates, expansions, language packs, and the particular games you choose. Treat any game-count estimate as a rough illustration, not a capacity guarantee.

Decide whether added storage must run games directly
“More storage” can mean a drive that runs games, a place to keep games until you move them back, or both. The supported options depend on the console; current PS5 and Xbox Series X|S guidance illustrates why the distinction matters, but does not establish requirements for a future generation.
PS5: M.2 SSD for playing PS5 games; USB for archiving them
Sony says an installed compatible M.2 SSD can download, copy, and launch PS5 and PS4 games. It must be an M.2 NVMe drive with effective heat dissipation; M.2 SATA SSDs are unsupported. USB extended storage serves a different role: PS5 games stored there must be copied back to console storage or an M.2 SSD before they can be played, while PS4 games can be played directly from USB. Xbox Series X|S: expansion card for direct play of optimized games
In launch-era guidance published by Xbox Wire in 2020, USB HDD and SSD drives could store Xbox games and directly play Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox titles. Series X|S-optimized games required internal storage or a console-specific Storage Expansion Card for direct play. Xbox Wire described the card as delivering the internal SSD’s sustained performance. Prices and availability vary, so compare the total cost of the specific compatible drive or card rather than choosing by capacity alone. If a console’s internal storage is enough for your active library, buying nothing may be the better choice.
Use deletion and redownloading as another option
On PS5, Sony says you can delete games and applications and re-download purchased games from your library, or move games to another supported storage location. Some games also let you delete selected portions of their data. If your internet access and time for downloads are dependable, this can reduce the need to buy extra storage. No official future-console storage capacity or expansion standard is established by the current-console sources cited here. Use your current library to estimate how much space would be convenient, but treat that figure as a planning estimate—not a confirmed requirement or a guarantee that a particular drive will work. Wait for the specific console’s compatibility guidance before buying expansion storage.
