How Much Storage Space Should You Leave Free on PS5 for a Large Game?

Sony does not set a universal free-space buffer for large PS5 games. Check the title’s current requirement, then choose a cleanup or expansion option that fits how you play.

There is no universal amount of extra free space Sony says every PS5 owner must reserve for a large game. Start with the game’s current displayed storage requirement on your console or its store listing; that is the minimum to plan around. Keeping additional room for updates and other console data is sensible, but any extra buffer is a practical cushion—not an official Sony rule.

How much free space do you actually need?

Use the specific game’s currently displayed space requirement as your starting point. Game sizes vary, and a title’s requirement can change when updates arrive, so a figure remembered from an older listing or installation may no longer be the right one. Check the current requirement for the game you intend to install rather than relying on a general estimate for “large” PS5 games.

The displayed requirement is a minimum planning figure, not a Sony-recommended free-space reserve for every situation. Sony’s storage guidance does not set a universal extra number of gigabytes to leave available. If your free space is only just enough for the listed requirement, freeing additional room can provide practical flexibility for updates and other console data, but Sony does not define a fixed cushion that guarantees every installation or update will work.

Think of the decision in two parts: first, meet the game’s current stated requirement; second, decide whether you want to keep more room available so you are less likely to need another cleanup when your installed games or console data change. The second part is a personal storage-management choice, not a separate official PS5 threshold.

The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
  • Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
  • Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
  • Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.

Check available space and the game’s requirement

  1. Check the console’s available storage. On the PS5, open Settings > Storage. Sony identifies this as the place to check free space.
  2. Check the title you want to install. Use the current space requirement shown on the console or on the game’s store listing. If the figure you had in mind is old, use the currently displayed one instead.
  3. Compare the two figures. If available space is below the game’s current requirement, you need to free or add storage before proceeding. If it is at or above the requirement, you meet that stated minimum, though leaving additional room is a useful practical choice.
  4. Choose how much flexibility you want. There is no official extra-space figure to plug into a universal formula. Consider whether you would rather make room now or manage storage again if the game’s needs or your other stored content change.

This comparison answers the immediate question without treating a single number as right for every console. The same free-space amount could be enough for one game and insufficient for another; the title’s current requirement is the useful reference point.

Why a game’s storage requirement is not a permanent number

Game installation requirements can vary by title and can change as updates arrive. That is why checking the current on-console or store-listed requirement is more dependable than applying a blanket estimate to every large game. It also explains why a console that had enough room for a game previously may later need attention when the game or the rest of the stored content changes.

Sony’s storage guidance does not provide a general extra buffer for updates, nor does it establish that a particular additional amount will cover every future change. It is reasonable to avoid running the console right to the edge of its capacity if you want less frequent cleanup, but the size of that cushion depends on your own library and how you use the console.

What to do when the PS5 says there is not enough storage

First compare the space available in Settings > Storage with the game’s current displayed requirement. If there is a shortfall, you can remove games or applications you are not using, or move content to another supported storage location. Choose based on whether you want a quick one-time cleanup, an archive for games you may revisit, or extra storage you can play from.

  • Delete games or applications you no longer need installed. Sony says purchased content can be downloaded again from your game library later. This can free internal capacity without buying hardware, but a deleted game must be downloaded again before you play it.
  • Move PS5 game data to USB extended storage for archiving. This can free console storage, but a PS5 game stored on USB extended storage cannot be played from there. To play it, move it back to console storage or M.2 storage.
  • Add a compatible M.2 SSD if shortages keep recurring. An M.2 SSD can store, download, and run PS5 games. It requires purchasing and installing additional hardware, so check Sony’s current requirements and the drive’s dimensions, including its cooling structure, before buying.

These approaches solve different problems. Deletion is a no-cost way to make room if you are comfortable reinstalling later. USB extended storage is useful when you want to keep game data available for a future transfer but do not need to launch PS5 games directly from that drive. M.2 storage is the internal expansion route when you want additional space from which PS5 games can be played.

Which storage option fits your situation?

Option Can you play a PS5 game from that location? Extra hardware required? Best fit
Delete a game or application No; the deleted game must be downloaded again before playing. No. A one-time cleanup when you do not need every installed title.
USB extended storage No. Move a PS5 game back to console storage or M.2 storage to play it. Yes, a USB extended-storage drive. Archiving PS5 game data to free console capacity while retaining it for later transfer.
Compatible M.2 SSD Yes. PS5 games can be stored and played from M.2 storage. Yes; the SSD must meet Sony’s requirements and have an effective cooling structure. Recurring shortages when you want more storage that can run PS5 games.

The distinction between keeping data and playing from it matters. USB storage can help you avoid deleting a PS5 game’s data, but it does not function as a direct play location for PS5 games. M.2 expansion is the option among these that both adds capacity and supports playing PS5 games from the added storage.

USB extended storage: useful for keeping games, not playing them

Sony lists USB extended-storage capacity from 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum on its PlayStation 5 support page; the publication year for that specification is not stated. These are drive capacity limits, not a recommendation for how much free space to leave on the console. The key limitation for this question is that PS5 games on USB extended storage must be moved back to console storage or M.2 storage before you can play them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes USB extended storage most useful if you want to retain game data without keeping it on the console’s playable storage. If you often switch among stored PS5 games, account for the transfer back before choosing USB as your main solution. The drive can reduce how often you need to download a title again, but it does not remove the step of moving the game before play.

M.2 SSD expansion: the option for playing PS5 games from added storage

A compatible M.2 SSD can store, download, and run PS5 games. Sony’s storage-solutions page lists expansion capacity up to 8 TB; the publication year for that figure is not stated. Capacity alone is not enough to establish compatibility, so check the current Sony guidance and the particular drive’s full dimensions before purchase.

  • Sony calls for an M.2 NVMe SSD using PCIe Gen4 x4.
  • Sony recommends a sequential read speed of at least 5500 MB/s.
  • The drive must have an effective cooling structure.
  • Check the supported form factor and size limits, including the heatsink, against Sony’s current M.2 installation guidance.
  • Sony cautions that meeting the listed specifications does not guarantee that every third-party drive will work.

In particular, do not check only the bare SSD dimensions if the drive includes a heatsink or other cooling structure. The relevant fit is the assembled drive, and Sony’s supported size limits include the heatsink. Recheck the official requirements and the product’s cooling dimensions when choosing a drive; do not assume that a capacity or speed label by itself proves it will fit and work.

M.2 is a better match for a recurring storage problem than deleting the same games repeatedly, but it introduces a purchase and installation decision. If you only need to make room once, removing unused content may be enough. If your priority is to keep more PS5 games installed in storage from which they can be played, M.2 expansion directly addresses that need.

How to choose a practical free-space target

Because Sony does not specify a universal buffer, use your current library and habits to decide how much room to keep open rather than treating a number from another player as a rule. A useful decision process is:

  1. Start with the next game. Check its current requirement on the console or store listing.
  2. Identify the actual gap. Compare that requirement with the available amount shown in Settings > Storage.
  3. Decide whether this is a one-time or recurring shortage. For a one-time need, delete content you can redownload or archive a PS5 game on USB. For repeated shortages, consider whether compatible M.2 expansion is worth the hardware cost and installation.
  4. Choose a cushion based on convenience. More open capacity can reduce how soon you need to repeat this process as game requirements or stored content change. There is no Sony-published fixed quantity that guarantees a particular outcome.

This approach avoids two unhelpful extremes: assuming every large game needs the same amount of space, and treating the game’s listed requirement as a promise that no other storage changes will ever be needed. The current requirement gives you a concrete starting point; your own tolerance for cleanup determines how much extra capacity you want available.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using an old size estimate. Requirements can change with updates; check the current display for the title you are installing.
  • Treating a suggested buffer as an official Sony rule. The reviewed Sony storage guidance does not specify one universal reserve for large games.
  • Expecting to launch a PS5 game from USB extended storage. Move it back to console or M.2 storage before playing.
  • Buying an M.2 SSD based on capacity alone. Verify interface, speed guidance, cooling, supported form factor, and total dimensions with heatsink against Sony’s latest compatibility information.
  • Assuming every drive that meets listed specifications is guaranteed to work. Sony explicitly cautions that meeting the specifications does not ensure compatibility for every third-party drive.
