In the United States, the PlayStation Vita launched on February 22, 2012, at $249.99 for the Wi-Fi model or $299.99 for the 3G/Wi-Fi model. Those were U.S. launch MSRPs; prices differed by region, and Japan got the system first.
PS Vita launch prices by region
| Region | Launch timing | Wi-Fi model | 3G/Wi-Fi model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Japan | December 17, 2011 | ¥24,980, including tax | ¥29,980, including tax |
| United States | February 22, 2012 | $249.99 MSRP | $299.99 MSRP |
| Europe | From February 22, 2012 | €249.99 recommended retail price | €299.99 recommended retail price |
| United Kingdom | From February 22, 2012 | £229.99 | £279.99 |
Sony’s Japanese announcement listed the yen prices including tax, and its launch FAQ gave Japan’s December 17, 2011 date. The U.S. and European systems followed in February 2012.
What the launch prices covered
The difference between the two prices in each listed market was the connectivity model: the Wi-Fi version was less expensive, while the 3G/Wi-Fi version cost more. Sony’s U.S. launch announcement specified $249.99 and $299.99 as MSRPs. Sony had announced rounded U.S. figures of $249 and $299 in June 2011; the later launch announcement is the source for the cent-level launch MSRPs.
A 4 GB memory card was a separate purchase, listed at $19.99 with a February 15, 2012 release date in Sony’s launch lineup announcement. It should not be added to the standard console price as though it were included.
