Multiplayer survival games combine two systems: a survival simulation and a network model that decides who can change that simulation, who receives those changes, and whether the world remains available when the original host leaves. Co-op, PvE and PvP are rule choices layered onto that shared simulation—not interchangeable descriptions of how a server works.
The practical questions are therefore connected: whether players can damage one another, whether bases and inventories persist, whether the host must be online, how many people can join, and how much control an administrator has over passwords, permissions, wipes and resets.

The two layers behind every multiplayer survival world
A survival game models gathering, crafting, construction, creatures, hazards and progression. Multiplayer adds a second layer: authority and synchronization. One machine or service must decide which actions are valid, apply them to the world, and distribute the resulting state to connected players.
Microsoft’s Minecraft Bedrock documentation describes this as a server-side model: scripts run on the server, the state of the world is shared between players, and the script can see all entities in that world. That matters because a multiplayer script cannot safely assume that one player is the only actor. A block change, creature event or damage event may have several possible causes, and the server has to resolve which one occurred.

In practice, the authoritative machine may be the host’s computer in a peer-to-peer session or a separate dedicated server. Clients display the world and send actions; the authority accepts, rejects or reconciles those actions. Better authority does not automatically make a game more fun, but it affects synchronization, moderation, cheating resistance and what happens when the host disconnects.
What co-op means in a survival game
Co-op normally means that players pursue compatible goals against environmental threats and game systems. They gather materials, build shelters, defeat creatures, explore dangerous areas and advance through the same progression. The word describes the social objective, not a universal rule about ownership or damage.
Shared simulation, separate decisions
Players may occupy one world while retaining separate characters, inventories or skill progress. A game can let everyone see the same base while assigning ownership of equipment or tamed creatures individually. Other games make construction, storage or progression more communal. Check the game’s rules before assuming that “co-op” means every item or unlock is shared.

A co-op server can still permit friendly fire, duels or limited player damage. Conversely, a server labeled PvE may protect players while leaving bases, creatures or resources exposed to environmental loss. Ask which objects are protected and which are not; the mode name alone is insufficient.
PvE, consensual PvP and always-on PvP
The main difference between multiplayer rulesets is the threat model: who or what can harm you and what can be lost when that happens.

| Ruleset | Primary threat | Typical social effect | Questions to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| PvE | Creatures, hazards and survival systems | Players cooperate without routine player damage | Are friendly-fire exceptions, base damage or loot theft enabled? |
| Consensual or opt-in PvP | Environmental threats plus player fights that participants accept | Co-op remains the default, with controlled duels or rivalry | How is consent enabled, and does it affect only damage or also loot and building? |
| Always-on PvP | Environmental threats and other players | Competition, ambushes, raiding and territorial defense become central | Can bases be raided, what is dropped on death, and how often does the world reset? |
Valheim illustrates the middle category: Iron Gate describes the game as focused on PvE while supporting consensual PvP. ARK documents separate PvE and PvP modes, while Rust’s server-gamemode documentation describes selectable rulesets, including Survival/Vanilla and Softcore configurations with altered PvP damage rules. These examples show that PvE and PvP are server policies applied to the same broad survival loop, not separate genres.
Does the world keep running when the host is offline?
Usually, a peer-hosted session depends on the host starting the session. If that player is offline, the world may be unavailable to everyone else because the host’s machine is both the authority and the entry point. This is convenient for a small group: one person creates a world, shares access details and closes it when the session ends.
A dedicated server is designed to remain available independently. Iron Gate describes its dedicated-server option as providing “a persistent world in which you and your friends can play anytime.” The server process stores the world and can run while no particular player is connected, subject to the operator’s hardware, network connection and maintenance schedule.
Persistence is more than an online switch
Ask what persists between sessions:
- World terrain, structures and containers.
- Character inventories, skills and location.
- Tamed creatures, farms and production queues.
- Damage states, dropped items and unfinished events.
- Server configuration, passwords and permissions.
A dedicated server can keep a world reachable, but it does not prevent resets, wipes, backups being restored or administrators changing rules. “Persistent” means the server can continue hosting the same save; it does not mean the world is immune to management decisions or game updates.
How many friends can join?
Capacity is a game-specific limit, not a property shared by all survival games. Valheim’s FAQ describes a small-group co-op design and caps a server at 10 simultaneous players. That figure applies to Valheim’s documented server limit; it should not be generalized to Minecraft Bedrock, ARK, Rust or other games, whose limits depend on their own editions, server settings and hosting arrangements.

When planning a group, distinguish the simultaneous-player cap from the number of people invited over time. A ten-person server may support a larger community if only ten connect at once, while a smaller practical group may be appropriate when the game has intensive building, combat or simulation workloads.

Host authority
In a peer-hosted game, the host’s computer handles the session’s authoritative state. The host’s connection and availability become part of the group’s experience. A slow or distant host can increase latency for everyone, and closing the session can remove access to the world.
Dedicated authority
A dedicated server separates world availability from any one player’s game session. It is easier to leave running, administer with a shared password and schedule for a group, but someone must maintain it. Operators need to protect save files, manage access, apply updates and decide when to restart or reset the world.
Why authority affects fairness
When the server validates actions, all clients receive a common result. That helps prevent contradictory inventories, duplicated objects and competing versions of the same base. It also gives administrators a place to enforce damage rules, permissions and bans. Server authority cannot eliminate every exploit or connection problem, but it establishes a single reference state for the world.
How the major examples differ
| Game | Documented multiplayer model | What it demonstrates |
|---|---|---|
| Valheim | PvE-focused co-op, consensual PvP, peer-hosted sessions and dedicated servers; 10 simultaneous players | The same small-group game can offer a convenient session or an always-available persistent world |
| Minecraft Bedrock | Server-side scripts operate on a world state shared between players and entities | Multiplayer logic must account for every actor, not a presumed single player |
| ARK | Official support distinguishes PvE, PvP and ARKpocalypse-style modes | Rules and reset styles can substantially change the same survival framework |
| Rust | Server operators select and tune gamemodes such as Survival/Vanilla and Softcore | Server configuration can alter PvP damage and the wider risk-reward balance |

- What is the threat model? Choose environmental PvE, opt-in PvP or always-on PvP. Decide whether death costs equipment, whether bases can be raided and whether friendly fire is acceptable.
- How persistent must the world be? If everyone plays at the same times, a host session may be enough. If people need to build or progress independently, use a dedicated server that can remain online.
- How large and regular is the group? Compare the game’s simultaneous-player cap with your expected peak. A small, stable group generally needs less administration than a public or rotating community.
- How much rule control is required? Look for passwords, permissions, damage settings, wipe and reset controls, backups and mod or configuration support. More control also means more responsibility for the operator.
A private peer-hosted world is usually the simplest choice for a few friends who play together. A dedicated server is the better fit when schedules differ, the world should remain available, or one person should not be the permanent gatekeeper. Public PvP requires the strongest expectations around moderation, recovery and loss.
Setting up a private co-op session
The labels vary by game, but the planning sequence is consistent:
- Create or select the world save and record its world name.
- Choose the threat model: PvE, consensual PvP or always-on PvP.
- Set a password or other access restriction before inviting anyone.
- Confirm the player limit and decide whether new characters, existing characters or both are allowed.
- Tell players what persists: buildings, inventories, creatures, deaths and progression.
- Start the session and test joining with one friend before distributing access details to the whole group.
For Valheim, Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide specifically addresses world names, ports, passwords, save locations and crossplay configuration. Use the values and labels in that guide for the version and platform you run rather than copying settings from an unrelated game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Setting up and operating a dedicated world
A dedicated server is a service, not merely a larger lobby. The operator should establish a routine before inviting players:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Choose the server’s world name and save location.
- Configure the documented network ports and enable crossplay only if the supported platforms require it.
- Set a strong password and decide who receives administrative permissions.
- Define PvE/PvP damage, building protection, wipe or reset policy and any permitted modifications.
- Make a backup before major updates or rule changes, and identify how to restore the save.
- Publish a short ruleset explaining raids, griefing, abandoned structures, bans and scheduled restarts.
- Test a clean join, a reconnect and a save reload before treating the server as ready.
The exact commands, port numbers and file paths differ by game and edition. A reliable setup follows the developer’s current server guide for that title; substituting another game’s instructions can expose the server or make clients unable to connect.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Common failure modes and fixes
The host is offline
That is expected behavior for many peer-hosted sessions. Move the save to a dedicated server or choose a hosting arrangement that runs independently.
Players see different positions or inventories
Check whether the server is still authoritative, restart the session cleanly and restore the latest known-good save if corruption or a rollback occurred. Avoid allowing several copies of the same world save to be edited independently.
Unwanted PvP or griefing
Change the damage rule, restrict access with a password, remove unnecessary administrative permissions and publish the server’s loss and ban policy. Opt-in PvP only works when every player understands how consent is recorded and what it covers.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The world feels empty or progress is lost
Confirm that everyone is joining the same world name and save, not a newly generated copy. Verify the save location and backup schedule, then check whether a wipe or reset rule was applied.
The group exceeds the practical capacity
Separate simultaneous capacity from long-term membership. If peak attendance reaches the cap, create a second world or reduce the active roster rather than relying on untested configuration changes.
Bottom line: choose rules first, hosting second
Co-op, PvE and PvP describe how players are allowed to interact inside a shared survival simulation. Peer hosting determines whether the world follows one player’s session; a dedicated server determines whether it can remain available independently. Decide the threat model, persistence requirement, group size and rule-control needs first, then select the hosting model that supports those decisions.
