How Multiplayer Works in Abiotic Factor: Co-op, Cross-Play, and Hosting

Abiotic Factor supports online co-op for up to six players, along with solo play and LAN co-op. One player hosts a session and can invite friends or open it to the public; it is not matchmaking-based, according to a developer statement from September 2023. Cross-play is advertised, but the official listings reviewed do not specify every compatible platform pairing.

How a multiplayer session works

Abiotic Factor uses player-hosted sessions rather than matchmaking. In a September 29, 2023 Steam Community reply, developer Zag said players can host their own sessions, invite friends, or open a session to the public. That statement describes the session model at the time; it does not establish every option in the current menus.

In practice, one player starts and hosts the session, and the others join that host’s game. The host’s computer may have a little more work to do: Steam Support says CPU requirements are slightly higher when hosting, particularly with several players, but does not quantify the difference or recommend a specific upgrade.

How many people can play together?

The console storefronts list online groups of up to six players. Xbox describes online co-op and multiplayer for 2–6 players, while PlayStation says up to six players can play online. These are the listed online group sizes, not a claim that every mode or platform combination has identical limits.

Which ways can you play?

  • Online co-op: Join a host’s session over the internet. The Xbox listing specifies online co-op for 2–6 players; PlayStation lists up to six online players. Xbox listing · PlayStation listing
  • LAN co-op: Steam Support lists LAN co-op. The developer also confirmed LAN play in the September 2023 discussion. The cited sources do not provide current setup instructions. Steam Support
  • Solo play: Steam Support lists single player, and the developer said the game can be played solo offline. Steam Support

Does Abiotic Factor support cross-play?

Cross-platform multiplayer is advertised: Xbox explicitly lists cross-platform co-op and multiplayer, and Steam Support labels the game as supporting cross-platform multiplayer. Those labels do not identify all supported pairings. If your group is mixing platforms—for example, PC and PS5—check current official platform guidance for that exact combination rather than assuming it works.

Does the host have to be online?

For the player-hosted session described by the developer, the host is the one running the game session, so friends depend on that session being available to join. The developer’s 2023 reply said work was underway on support for player-hosted dedicated servers, but that historical statement does not confirm current availability, setup steps, or console support. If your group needs a world available while its usual host is away, verify current official server documentation before choosing a dedicated-server setup.

Do you need an online subscription?

Subscription requirements depend on platform. The Xbox listing says online console multiplayer requires Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate. The PlayStation listing says PS Plus is required for online play. These console requirements should not be generalized to PC editions or other regions; check the relevant store listing for your account and location.

Teacher Created Resources SpellChecked Card Game (EP66111)
  • Spellchecked is a fun way for the whole family to help young learners improve their spelling. Each box contains 200 Spelling cards and 8 Spellchecker cards, which are keys that players can use to check each other’s answers. An easy-to-follow instruction sheet is included.
  • The Spelling cards are divided into 8 color-coded decks and 4 ability levels. Players choose a deck to play. Each card shows a familiar image, gives the first letter of the word, and asks the player to identify the image and spell the word for points.
  • If the player cannot spell the word correctly, the card is turned over to reveal three possible spellings. If the player can choose the correct spelling, they receive a lesser amount of points. The first player to reach 30 points is the winner.
  • Spellchecked helps young learners recognize spelling patterns, use critical-thinking strategies, and learn from misspellings. The game plays to young learners’ strengths in identifying images and choosing a correct spelling from three possibilities.
  • For anyone ages 8 and over in groups of 2–8 players. Play it with 3rd graders or 6th graders. Play it with friends or aunts or grandparents. The more advanced the level, the tougher the words are to spell and the correct answers are worth fewer points.

Choosing how your group should play

  • For a small group, check that everyone is on a confirmed compatible platform combination before planning a session.
  • If one person can host whenever the group wants to play, a host-run session matches the described model.
  • If you want LAN play or solo offline play, Steam Support lists both options; consult the relevant platform’s current instructions for setup.
  • On Xbox or PlayStation, confirm the applicable online subscription before relying on internet co-op.
