How NASCAR Drivers Can Recover Positions After an Early-Race Setback

A NASCAR comeback after an early setback may come from passing, a strategic pit call, or a caution procedure. The right move depends on pace, tires, fuel, track conditions, and the rules.

NASCAR drivers can recover positions after an early setback by passing at pace, using drafting where the track allows it, making a calculated pit call, or benefiting from a caution procedure—but none is a guaranteed shortcut. The best response depends on why the car lost ground, its tires and fuel, how difficult the circuit is to pass on, how much of the race remains, and the event’s rules.

First, identify what caused the lost positions

A slow start, a handling problem, an incident, a pit-road penalty, and simply being caught in traffic call for different responses. The team needs to weigh the car’s pace against the cost of stopping, the condition of its tires, its fuel range, and the laps remaining. A caution can change the immediate options, but it does not erase every disadvantage or guarantee a better restart.

There is no reliable overall percentage for how often a NASCAR driver recovers from an early setback. A single comeback story cannot establish the odds; the circumstances and rules vary from race to race.

When the car has pace, pass cleanly

If the car is competitive, the direct route is to make up ground on track. Drivers can work through traffic with clean passes and, where the track and racing conditions make it useful, drafting. Drafting is not equally available at every circuit or in every race package, so a driver may have to be patient when passing opportunities are limited.

NASCAR’s 2013 guidance listed drafting, tire and fuel management, pitting, and alternative or long-fuel strategies among acceptable racing actions. That historical list is illustrative, not a complete statement of today’s rules. NASCAR’s 2013 driver-meeting account provides that context.

When to pit—and what the call trades away

A pit stop can address tires or fuel, but it can also cost track position. Staying out may move a car forward on the running order while leaving it on older tires or with less fuel in reserve. Pitting may improve the car’s condition, yet put it behind cars that stay out. Neither choice is automatically best.

Before calling for a stop, the team has to consider how the decision fits the race:

  • Restart position: Where will the car line up if it stops, and how much ground could it gain by staying out?
  • Tires: How much grip remains, and how much might fresh tires help on this track?
  • Fuel: Can the car reach its next planned stop, or does it need fuel now?
  • Timing: Is the stop under green or caution, and how many laps remain?
  • Passing conditions: How difficult will it be to pass cars after rejoining?
  • Rules and eligibility: Is the car subject to a penalty or a restriction that changes its options?

Speeding on pit road is one risk to account for. NASCAR’s 2025 national-series penalty card lists a pass-through penalty for speeding under green and a restart at the tail under yellow. Those are the card’s 2025 provisions; teams and fans should check the current series and event reference rather than assume the same rule applies unchanged in 2026. Read NASCAR’s 2025 pit-road penalty card.

For historical perspective only, NASCAR reported in 2014 that changing four tires and adding 18 gallons of fuel could take 12 seconds or less. That is not a current benchmark or a prediction of how much time a team will lose today. NASCAR’s account of pit-stop evolution describes the figure.

How a caution can help—and hurt

A caution can bring the field together, provide an opportunity to pit, or open a path to regain a lap under a defined procedure. But the decision has consequences: staying out may protect immediate track position at the expense of tire condition or fuel, while pitting can leave a car restarting behind those that did not stop.

A wave-around is not a general right to reclaim a lap. NASCAR’s 2016 explanation described the procedure as an opportunity for eligible lapped cars that stay on track rather than pit under caution to be awarded a lap; it also said those cars could not pit until the race returned to green. That is historical background, not a universal current procedure. The applicable event rules determine who qualifies and what happens next. NASCAR’s 2016 explanation of a restart-order scenario gives the earlier description.

Why the official restart order may surprise viewers

The order shown by cars’ apparent positions on track may not settle where they restart. After a 2024 Nashville incident, NASCAR explained Kyle Busch’s placement by referring to scoring-loop data and whether his car maintained reasonable speed for the conditions. Restart placement is an official determination under the applicable rules, not something viewers can reliably infer just by watching which cars passed one another. NASCAR’s explanation of Busch’s Nashville restart placement details that case.

Nor should a driver assume that giving a position back later will undo a prohibited gain. In a 2026 case about advancing below the line at EchoPark Speedway, NASCAR vice president of racing communications Mike Forde said, “Unfortunately for Bubba, attempting to give the position back does not matter in this rule.” His comment concerned that specific rule and incident; it should not be treated as a universal account of how every penalty works. NASCAR’s explanation of the Wallace line-violation penalty describes the case.

A simple way to think through the recovery

  1. Diagnose the setback. Separate a temporary loss of track position from a car problem, incident, or penalty; each changes the available response.
  2. Assess pace and passing. If the car can pass cleanly, work forward on track. If traffic or the circuit makes passing difficult, compare the value of track position with the potential benefit of stopping.
  3. Check tires, fuel, and remaining distance. Decide whether the car can stay out safely and competitively or needs service, and account for how many laps remain.
  4. Reassess under caution. Compare the restart consequences of pitting or staying out and confirm whether any lap-recovery procedure applies at that event.
  5. Follow official scoring and instructions. Do not assume the visible order determines the restart or that yielding later cures an infraction.
