A ranking orders prospects by an evaluator’s view of their quality; a mock draft predicts which players teams may select. New evidence can change either, but not always for the same reason.
How are NBA draft projections made?
There is no single public formula that represents every NBA team’s draft process. Public rankings and statistical models also differ in the information they use and the assumptions they make. It is more useful to think of a projection as an evaluation assembled from evidence than as the output of one definitive metric.
Game performance, skills, and role
Evaluators study how a prospect performs in games: the skills they show, the production they generate, the role they play, and the competition they face. They also consider how specific abilities—such as shooting, creation, defense, and decision-making—might carry over to NBA play. The same box-score production can mean different things depending on how a player got it and what responsibilities they had.
Game-action data can add detail to that picture. NBA.com’s 2026 combine coverage describes college-season Synergy play-type data tracking how often and how efficiently players perform actions including isolations, post-ups, spot-ups, cuts, and pick-and-roll as ball handler or roll man. Those figures can be considered alongside physical and drill data, not instead of watching players compete in games. NBA.com’s 2026 combine coverage describes this combined use of evidence.

Physical profile and combine evidence
The NBA Combine supplies structured measurements and observations, but each is one piece of evidence to interpret. NBA.com’s 2026 overview lists measurement stations for height without shoes, weight, body-fat percentage, standing reach, wingspan, hand length, and hand width. Tests include no-step and maximum vertical jumps, lane and shuttle drills, and a three-quarter-court sprint. Required shooting drills include off-the-dribble and spot-up shooting, a star drill, a side-mid-side drill, and free throws. The overview also describes scrimmages and opportunities to meet team officials. These details describe the 2026 event; combine formats and participants may vary by year. NBA.com’s 2026 combine overview lists the stations and activities.
Measurements can clarify dimensions such as reach or size; movement tests and drills offer additional observations about athleticism or shooting. But NBA.com characterizes combine measurements as a snapshot: a test result does not establish on its own how a player will perform in real-game situations. The relevant question is how the evidence fits with the prospect’s game performance and role. The NBA’s 2026 Data Hub says its experience draws on 25 years of combine data for historical comparison; that figure describes the data available for comparison, not the predictive accuracy of combine measurements. NBA.com’s Data Hub overview attributes the figure to the 2026 hub.
What can make a prospect’s ranking move?
A ranking can change when an evaluator sees new evidence about a prospect’s skills, role, physical profile, or likely NBA translation. It can also move when the evaluator revises how much weight to give evidence already available. The change is a judgment update, not proof that the earlier observations were false.
New observations from tests, drills, or scrimmages
Combine results can clarify a player’s measured size or reach, while tests and shooting drills add observations about movement, jumping, or shot-making in a structured setting. Scrimmages can show how a prospect fares against other NBA-caliber players or in a less familiar role. These observations may prompt a reassessment, but they should be checked against game performance rather than treated as a conclusive verdict.

Scouting and conversations change the picture
A 2024 example illustrates how projections can shift as evaluators gather more information. NBA.com republished Jonathan Wasserman’s account that combine performances affected several prospects’ draft stock. Wasserman also described changing his mock projections after scouting in Chicago and talking with scouts and executives. The same article noted that there was no consensus answer for the top prospect, underscoring that an update is an evaluator’s revised judgment rather than an official or settled answer. Read the 2024 account on NBA.com.
Team-selection expectations can change separately
A predicted draft position may move because expectations about what teams will do have changed. That is distinct from an analyst changing their view of a player’s quality. Team context and preferences can affect a mock draft without changing the evaluator’s prospect ranking. Public sources do not establish confidential team boards or document every reason behind an individual team decision, so a specific player’s movement should not be attributed to an undisclosed team factor without evidence.
Rankings, statistical models, and mock drafts answer different questions
| Format | Question it answers | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Prospect ranking | How does an evaluator order the players? | An assessment of relative prospect quality. |
| Mock draft | Where might teams select players? | A forecast of team selections, which can reflect expected team choices as well as views of players. |
| Consensus mock | What selection order emerges by combining multiple forecasts? | A summary of forecasts, not an official NBA or team board and not proof of accuracy. |
| Statistical model | How do selected measurable inputs relate to an evaluation or forecast? | A model built on particular data and assumptions; there is no single public model that stands for every team’s process. |
A 2023 research paper studies ways to aggregate mock drafts and proposes a method for combining ranked lists. That is a technique for summarizing multiple forecasts, not evidence that a consensus mock is accurate or endorsed by the NBA. The 2023 paper on mock-draft aggregation describes the method.

When a prospect rises or falls, first identify what changed: the underlying player evaluation, the available evidence, or the forecast of team selection order. If comparing two projections, use the same dimensions and note when each was published. Relevant evidence includes game production and role, the evaluator’s reasoning about skill translation, age and physical measurements, and the quality of the evidence—such as full-game observation versus a drill or scrimmage.
Best Value
There is no common numerical scale established across the cited sources for combining these dimensions into one score. Avoid treating measurements, play-type statistics, and opinions from different rankings as directly interchangeable. A movement in a ranking is most informative when the evaluator explains what new evidence or changed interpretation drove it.
What the combine can—and cannot—tell you
The combine makes certain measurements and structured observations easier to compare, and historical data can provide context. Its tests do not settle how a player’s game will translate, nor do the cited sources establish a universal formula or a guaranteed predictive edge. The most defensible projection combines measured evidence with game performance and an explicit explanation of the evaluator’s judgment.
