NFL division rivals play each other twice every regular season, and those repeat matchups can decide who wins the division. The games also shape tiebreakers and playoff seeding: each conference’s four division champions receive seeds 1 through 4, though a division title does not guarantee the conference’s top seed.
How do NFL division rivalries work?
The NFL has 32 teams, divided into the American Football Conference (AFC) and National Football Conference (NFC). Each conference has four divisions—East, North, South and West—and each division contains four teams. That puts three divisional opponents on every team’s schedule. NFL Football Operations explains the league’s structure and schedule.
Each team plays each of its three division opponents twice: once at home and once away. Those six matchups are the team’s divisional games. With 17 regular-season games played across 18 weeks and one bye week, divisional games account for six of a team’s 17 games. The NFL’s schedule explanation states: “Each NFL team plays 17 games over the 18-week season.”
Why do NFL teams play division rivals twice?
The home-and-away schedule gives teams another head-to-head meeting with each opponent in the group they are directly competing against for a division title. Because the same teams meet twice, the results can affect both the teams’ head-to-head record and their divisional records—the latter is also part of the official division-title tiebreaking process.

The games are consequential by format, but that does not mean every divisional pairing has the same history or fan intensity. Claims that a particular rivalry is especially heated or historic need evidence about those specific teams.
Why do division games matter in the NFL standings?
A division title goes to the team that finishes ahead of its three divisional opponents. If two teams are tied for the title, the NFL’s tiebreaking sequence begins with head-to-head record, then division record, common games and conference record. Strength of victory and strength of schedule follow, along with additional criteria. The procedure differs for ties involving more than two teams, so a specific standings tie must be evaluated under the applicable NFL rules. See the NFL’s tiebreaking procedures.

When assessing a close division race, compare the teams’ head-to-head results, divisional records, overall standings and remaining schedules. A team’s record against division opponents is important, but it is not the only factor in the title race or in every tie scenario.

Under the format described in the NFL’s 2025 Record & Fact Book, the four division champions in each conference occupy seeds 1 through 4. The next three conference teams are seeded 5 through 7. A division winner therefore earns a top-four seed in its conference; it is not automatically the conference’s top seed, which goes to the conference champion with the best seeding position under the applicable standings and tiebreaking rules.

How to compare two teams in a division race
- Head-to-head: Check both meetings between the teams, where applicable. Their results matter directly in a two-team division-title tie.
- Divisional record: Compare each team’s results against all three division opponents; this is the second criterion in the listed two-team division-title sequence.
- Overall standings and schedule: Review each team’s current position and remaining games. These provide context for what can still change, but a tie must be resolved using the NFL’s applicable procedure.
- Playoff position: Separate division champions, who take seeds 1 through 4 in each conference under the cited format, from the teams seeded 5 through 7.
