How NFL Teams Evaluate an Edge Rusher Returning After a Long Absence

NFL teams do not decide an edge rusher is ready because a calendar date has arrived. They combine injury-specific medical clearance, tolerance for football activity, practice evidence, defensive reacclimation and position-specific performance. A concussion follows a league return-to-participation protocol; an ACL repair, broken leg, ankle injury or knee surgery follows an individualized club plan. In every case, the football question is whether the player can safely and repeatedly perform his assignment at game speed.

What “ready to return” actually means

Return decisions have at least two separate gates. The first is medical: doctors and athletic trainers determine whether the injury has healed sufficiently for the planned workload. The second is football readiness: coaches need evidence that the player can execute his role, absorb contact, react to changing blocks and sustain effort without a protective limitation.

Those gates do not always open together. A player can be medically cleared but still need practice time to restore timing, conditioning or confidence. Conversely, a player may look sharp in a walkthrough while the medical staff still restricts contact or volume. Public comments from clubs and coaches describe this process in broad terms; teams do not publish a universal scoring sheet or weighting system.

The medical pathway depends on the injury

Concussion has a formal NFL process

The NFL’s published Return-to-Participation Protocol applies specifically to concussion. A player advances only when he tolerates the current phase without a recurrence of concussion signs or symptoms. The sequence moves from symptom-limited activity to aerobic exercise, football-specific exercise, non-contact team drills, and then full football activity. Club medical clearance and independent neurological confirmation are required before return.

The protocol deliberately has no fixed number of days. Progress is case by case, and a symptom recurrence can require a step back. A concussion protocol therefore should not be presented as the template for an ACL, ankle, leg or knee injury.

Structural injuries use individualized milestones

For other injuries, teams set milestones around healing, strength, movement quality, workload and contact tolerance. The public record usually gives only a snapshot rather than the club’s private tests. Green Bay’s June 3, 2026 update on Micah Parsons is a useful example: he was five months beyond reconstructive ACL surgery with meniscus cleanup and was following a described nine-month no-football plan. Four months remained under that plan at the time of the report. Parsons said the purpose was career longevity, not forcing an early return. That is a player-specific plan, not a universal ACL timetable.

Detroit offered a different snapshot for Aidan Hutchinson. On May 22, 2025, the club reported that doctors and trainers had cleared him and that he was a full participant in the offseason program 221 days after his leg fracture. The clearance and participation status established what he could do in that program; they did not guarantee that his first regular-season game would reproduce his previous production.

Practice is the bridge between rehabilitation and a game

Practice lets a club observe football tasks that a medical examination cannot: defeating a tackle’s hands, changing direction when the quarterback moves, setting an edge against a run block, communicating a stunt and recovering after a failed rush. Coaches can increase contact and repetitions in controlled steps, compare the injured side with the healthy side and watch for hesitation or compensatory movement.

When Kemoko Turay was returning from an ankle injury in October 2020, Indianapolis coach Frank Reich said the edge rusher would likely need a couple of weeks of practice and would have to prove himself before a game return was considered. Reich put the decision plainly: “He’s gonna have to prove he can do it out on the practice field first before we think about putting him back on in a game.” The statement answers the common question “How many weeks of practice does an injured pass rusher need?” with the only defensible answer: there is no league-wide number. “A couple weeks” described Turay’s situation, not a rule for every player or injury.

Teams can use practice reports, snap counts, contact restrictions and the player’s response the next day as evidence. A clean session followed by swelling, pain or loss of range of motion can delay progression. A player who completes several sessions but cannot repeat high-effort rushes may be medically safe yet not ready for a normal game role.

Relearning the defense is part of the comeback

A long absence can remove a player from meetings, terminology changes and weekly game-plan adjustments. If the coordinator or defensive structure has changed, the rusher may have to relearn alignments, pressure calls, run fits, coverage drops and “alert” responsibilities while still rehabbing.

In June 2026, Parsons described learning a new coordinator’s system through visual observation and walkthrough-style explanation during rehabilitation. That kind of work does not replace live practice, but it reduces the mental load when contact resumes. Coaches can then judge whether the player is late to a stunt because of physical rust or because he is still processing a new call.

The Rams’ September 14, 2026 discussion of Myles Garrett showed why clubs resist calendar promises. Sean McVay said, “I don’t really [have a timeline] yet,” explaining that the team needed more information after knee surgery. He contrasted Garrett’s circumstances with Aaron Donald’s return after a two-year absence, which he characterized as getting Donald up to speed. The comparison illustrates that observed limitation, medical progress and football reacclimation can produce different decisions even when the headline is simply “returning from a long absence.”

What coaches evaluate at the edge position

There is no NFL-mandated edge-rusher checklist, but the position makes certain traits easy to observe. Reich identified Turay’s speed and ability to bend around an offensive tackle as his particular advantages. Those traits, along with the broader checks below, help coaches decide whether a player can contribute rather than merely participate.

Explosive get-off and first-step confidence

Coaches watch whether the rusher can leave his stance without guarding an injured leg or ankle. A slower first step may reflect conditioning, pain, strength loss or simple timing rust. They also watch repeated starts, because one impressive rep does not establish game readiness.

Bend, cornering and body control

Turning the corner requires ankle, knee and hip mobility while the player leans toward the quarterback. The club looks for the ability to reduce his surface area, stay balanced through contact and finish without an awkward landing. A rusher who can run straight but cannot bend safely may be limited to a narrower package.

Hand usage and ability to convert speed to power

Pass rush is a chain of movements: threaten with speed, attack a tackle’s leverage, use a club or rip, then counter when the blocker oversets. Coaches assess whether both arms can strike and whether the player can convert speed to power without exposing the recovering joint.

Run defense and edge-setting

An edge defender must absorb a tight end or tackle, keep outside leverage, squeeze a running lane and shed at the correct moment. Teams test this work in contact periods because a player who can rush in space may still be unable to anchor against a drive block.

Containment, pursuit and finish

The rusher must maintain quarterback contain, redirect when the quarterback escapes and chase laterally when the play goes away. Coaches observe whether he can accelerate again after contact and finish a sack or tackle without protecting one side.

Conditioning and workload tolerance

Game readiness includes recovery between snaps and between series. A club may begin with a sub-package role, cap the number of rushes or remove special-teams duties. The key evidence is not only the best rep but the quality of the last rep, plus the player’s response later that day and the following morning.

How the public examples compare

Player and report Injury or absence context Evidence publicly described What it does not establish
Micah Parsons, Green Bay, June 3, 2026 Five months after reconstructive ACL surgery with meniscus cleanup Nine-month no-football plan; four months remained; emphasis on longevity A universal ACL return date or a league standard
Aidan Hutchinson, Detroit, May 22, 2025 Leg fracture; 221 days before the report Cleared by doctors and trainers; full offseason participation Guaranteed regular-season workload or restored production
Kemoko Turay, Indianapolis, October 2020 Ankle injury Coach anticipated a couple weeks of practice and required practice proof before game action; speed and bend were key traits A required number of practice weeks for other edge rushers
Myles Garrett, Los Angeles Rams discussion, September 14, 2026 Knee surgery; timeline not set McVay said the club needed more information and declined to provide a date A prediction of Garrett’s return or a standard comparison with another player

Hutchinson’s pre-injury production illustrates the type of context a club may keep in mind: Detroit reported 7.5 sacks, 17 quarterback hits and 45 total pressures in five and a half games before his 2024 injury. Those numbers describe what he had demonstrated before the fracture; they are not a post-injury forecast or a success rate.

A typical decision sequence, without a universal timetable

The exact order and emphasis vary by injury and club, but a return commonly develops through the following evidence:

  1. Medical examination and restrictions. Doctors and trainers establish what movement, contact and workload are permitted. For concussion, the player must complete the league protocol; for other injuries, the club sets its own milestones.
  2. Individual football movement. The player progresses through stance work, acceleration, change of direction, pass-rush movements and position drills. Staff monitor symptoms, mechanics and next-day response.
  3. Non-contact or limited team work. The rusher runs calls, stunts, rush lanes and run fits without full collision. This reveals whether the injury or conditioning loss affects assignment execution.
  4. Contact practice. Coaches add blocks, tackles and higher rep counts. They test the player’s ability to bend, anchor, shed and finish, not merely to jog through a drill.
  5. Role and workload decision. The club chooses whether to activate the player, use him in a reduced package, cap snaps or wait. Medical clearance is necessary but does not dictate the number of snaps.
  6. Game observation and adjustment. The first game supplies new evidence: reaction to real blocking schemes, recovery between series and response the next day. A return is an ongoing progression rather than a one-time pass/fail event.

Why a long absence changes the risk calculation

  • Physical capacity can lag behind healing. A repaired structure may be stable while strength, conditioning or explosive power remains below the player’s baseline.
  • Compensation can create new problems. Protecting one leg may alter planting, tackling or landing mechanics elsewhere.
  • Football timing decays. Tackles change depth and hands; quarterbacks climb or escape; a rusher must react rather than perform a rehearsed movement.
  • The defense may have changed. New terminology or a new coordinator can make mental reacclimation as important as physical work.
  • Role expectations differ. A star may be eased in as a designated pass rusher, while a younger player may need to play early downs and special teams to justify activation.

These factors explain why one player’s nine-month plan, another player’s full offseason participation and a third player’s undated return can all be reasonable decisions.

What teams can and cannot infer from statistics

Sacks, quarterback hits and pressures establish a player’s pre-injury role and value. They help coaches decide which traits are worth preserving and which rush packages might be rebuilt first. They do not reveal whether a repaired knee tolerates contact, whether an ankle can bend around a tackle or whether the player can repeat efforts late in a game.

The available public examples do not provide a cross-player study, an average absence length or a predictive model for post-injury edge-rusher performance. Nor do they show clubs’ private strength tests, medical imaging or internal grades. A responsible evaluation therefore treats reported figures as case context, not as proof that a particular return plan will succeed.

The practical answer for a returning edge rusher

Teams ask a layered question: Is the player medically cleared for the intended activity; can he tolerate progressively harder football work; can he execute the current defense without hesitation; and can he produce his defining traits repeatedly and safely? The answer must be supported by observed practice and workload response, not by the calendar alone.

That is why a formal concussion protocol can specify phases while an ACL, ankle, leg or knee recovery cannot be reduced to the same script. It is also why a coach may demand practice proof, limit a player’s first-game role or decline to set a date even after encouraging rehabilitation reports. The final decision is an evidence-based judgment about this player, this injury, this defense and this week’s football demands.
