When Do Big-Budget Games Usually Go on Sale?

Steam's seasonal sales and PlayStation's recurring promotions are dependable times to check for big-budget game discounts—but no event guarantees a deal on a specific title.

Big-budget games can go on sale at any time, but the most reliable times to check are major storefront promotions. Steam runs four seasonal sales each year; PlayStation also holds recurring Spring and Summer sales, Days of Play, and Black Friday promotions. None guarantees that a particular game will be discounted: the publisher, platform, region, edition, and release date all affect what is available.

When are the main sales?

Use these events as reminders to check a game’s listing, not as promises of a discount. Dates below are official announcements available as of October 2026; future calendars may change.

Steam seasonal sales

Valve says Steam runs four storefront-wide seasonal events each year. Its announced dates are:

Sale Announced dates
Autumn Sale 2026 October 1–8, 2026
Winter Sale 2026 December 17, 2026–January 4, 2027
Spring Sale 2027 March 18–25, 2027
Summer Sale 2027 June 24–July 8, 2027

Valve’s Steamworks calendar is the source for these dates.

PlayStation promotions

Sony’s U.S. promotions calendar lists a Spring Sale from March 25 to April 22, 2026; Days of Play from May 27 to June 10, 2026; and a Summer Sale from July 15 to August 12, 2026. It also lists a 2025 Black Friday offer period from November 21 to December 5. These are examples of published event dates, not fixed dates for every year. See PlayStation’s U.S. deals page for current offers.

For the 2026 Summer Sale, Sony said the promotion began July 15, refreshed July 27, and ended August 12. Some offers were to be replaced during the promotion, so individual deals could have different availability. Sony directed shoppers to check the store for regional and offer-specific details: PlayStation’s Summer Sale announcement.

Why a game may not be discounted

A storefront-wide event does not mean every major release is included. On Steam, publishers submit discounts for their games, and participation and discount size vary. Valve says released games may participate in seasonal sales subject to its rules. A Steam discount of at least 20% triggers an email notification for players who have the game on their wishlist; that threshold is a notification rule, not a promise that every wishlisted game will receive a discount. Steam’s discount guidance explains how publishers manage offers.

New Steam releases have a cooldown

Valve’s general rule is that a publisher cannot submit a discount within 30 days of a game’s release, a price increase in any currency, or the end of its launch discount. A game whose cooldown ends during a seasonal event may be added after the cooldown expires. This is a Steam rule; it should not be assumed to apply to PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, or physical retailers. Details are in Valve’s Steamworks discount documentation.

How to decide whether to buy now or wait

  1. Wishlist the exact game on its storefront. Steam can email you when a wishlisted title receives a discount of at least 20%. Other stores may have their own wishlist alerts.
  2. Check near the next relevant promotion. Steam’s seasonal events and PlayStation’s announced promotions are useful checkpoints, but a game may be absent or the offer may not suit your budget.
  3. Verify the listing before buying. Confirm the platform, edition and included content, currency and region, discount, and the offer’s end date. PlayStation notes that regional offers can differ and that individual offers may be replaced during a promotion.
  4. Compare the specific deal, not just the event name. A large sale does not prove a game’s current price is its lowest. Check that game’s own price history if you want to judge the offer against previous prices; the calendars above do not establish historical lows.
  5. Factor in when you want to play. If a promotion is close, waiting may be worthwhile, but there is no guaranteed wait time or discount percentage for big-budget games as a group.

Is there a best month to buy big-budget games?

There is no single best month supported across all games and stores. Steam’s four annual events provide recurring opportunities to check, while PlayStation’s calendar includes several other promotions. A particular title may appear in one event and not another, and its offer may differ by region or edition. The available official calendars establish sale windows, not a market-wide average discount, the share of major games that go on sale, or how long a buyer should wait for a particular game.
