A wide receiver’s depth-chart slot is a useful clue about expected opportunity, but it is not a fantasy projection on its own. Before drafting, adding or starting a receiver, compare the listing with current availability and actual snaps, routes and targets; then account for team and opponent context and your league’s scoring rules. There is no established universal point boost for moving up one spot.
What a depth-chart slot tells you—and what it doesn’t
A depth chart records a team’s listed hierarchy at a particular time. It can help indicate a player’s expected role, especially before a season begins or after an injury changes the lineup. It does not directly tell you how many offensive plays the receiver will be on the field for, how often he will run a route, or how many targets he will get.
That distinction matters because projection approaches can combine roster context with realized usage. For example, GameDay Analytics’ methodology describes using a range of usage, availability and context features, while Fantasy Football Targets’ methodology describes a model that includes depth-chart position and injury designation. These are examples of provider-specific methods, not proof that every projection service uses the same inputs or weights them alike.
How receiver opportunity becomes a fantasy projection
A useful way to think about a projection is as a sequence: estimate whether the player is available, estimate the team’s passing opportunities, estimate the player’s share, translate expected targets into catches, yards and touchdowns, then apply the league’s scoring settings. Fantasy Football Targets describes an availability-and-opportunity stage followed by efficiency rates regressed toward positional averages. That is one provider’s disclosed approach, not a universal formula.

A depth-chart listing can inform the role estimate, particularly when there is little current-season evidence. As games are played, usage measures offer a more direct view of how the offense is deploying the receiver:
- Snap share: the share of team offensive plays on which the player is on the field. Being on the field creates the possibility of a route, but not every snap is a passing play.
- Route participation: how often the player runs a route on relevant dropbacks. The NFL’s Next Gen Stats article says that how often a pass catcher runs a route can reveal strategy and tendencies at league, team and individual levels. Its wideout route-recognition model was trained on more than 100,000 routes; that is a model-training count, not evidence that a chart position causes fantasy production. See NFL Next Gen Stats’ route-recognition article.
- Target share: the player’s share of his team’s targets. It is a measure of earned receiving opportunity, not a guarantee that the same share will persist.
- Air-yards share: the player’s share of intended passing yardage. It helps distinguish a receiver who sees many short targets from one whose targets are deeper.
These measures describe different parts of opportunity; one cannot simply stand in for all the others. The available methodologies support treating them as useful inputs, but do not establish a standard formula or weighting used across projection providers.
How to evaluate a promotion or a teammate’s injury
When a starter moves down the chart or is ruled out, the listed promotion is a starting point for investigation—not a forecast of inherited production. The vacated routes and targets may be split among several receivers, shifted to tight ends or backs, or affected by a change in team passing volume. One provider methodology explicitly considers vacated usage, but that does not mean remaining receivers inherit it in equal shares.

- Verify the change and availability. Check the latest chart and injury information, including its date, team and week. A player listed higher may still be limited or unavailable.
- Look for evidence on the field. Review recent snaps and routes, then targets and air-yards share. Treat a short stretch cautiously, especially if the role is new or the player has missed time.
- Assess the redistribution. Consider which players are likely to take the missing routes and targets, as well as whether the offense’s passing tendencies or personnel change.
- Apply game and league context. Opponent, expected game conditions, team passing volume, projection horizon and scoring format all affect the value of the opportunity.
A nominal WR2 can be a better fantasy option than a nominal WR1 in another offense or scoring format if their routes and targets differ. The label alone does not settle the comparison.
Why the projection number can change
Projection changes are not necessarily caused by a depth-chart move. Availability, teammate competition, offensive volume, opponent and game conditions can all matter. A model may reflect several of these factors at once, so it is risky to attribute a point change to one input without a provider’s evidence about that input’s effect.
There is no defensible general estimate in the reviewed sources for how many fantasy points a receiver gains from moving up one chart position. One surfaced vendor describes a held-out evaluation trained on 2022–2024 data and tested on 2025, but that design does not isolate the independent effect of depth-chart order. Avoid applying a fixed point or percentage boost to a promotion.

How to compare projection tools and player options
Published totals depend on the provider, scoring context and projection horizon. NFL Fantasy’s projections page displays receiving statistics and fantasy points and says its projections reflect news, injury updates and trends; the page surfaced for this topic reflected 2025-season data, not a live 2026 snapshot. Check the week or season view and the scoring settings before comparing a number with your league. NFL Fantasy also offers a draft kit with receiver tiers and opportunity-focused resources.
When comparing receivers or projection pages, use the same horizon and scoring format, and check the evidence behind the role:
Recommended Free Tools
- Chart order and the chart’s date.
- Current availability and injury status.
- Recent snaps and route participation.
- Target share and air-yards share.
- Team passing volume and competition from teammates.
- Opponent and game environment.
- Scoring format and whether the projection is weekly or for a full season.
Depth charts are time-sensitive. Sportradar documents a weekly depth-chart endpoint in its developer reference, illustrating that chart data can be updated weekly; this does not establish that every team publishes a definitive chart or that the endpoint is freely available. Likewise, ESPN’s 2026 fantasy depth-chart PDF is a seasonal, fantasy-oriented editorial resource: ESPN says its chart position is based on fantasy value, so it should not be treated as an official team depth chart or a live guarantee of playing time.
