It does not necessarily mean the injury has healed: practice participation and expected game availability are reported separately.
What “cleared” means on an NFL injury report
“Cleared” is common sports-news shorthand, not a specific NFL game-status label. Under the league’s policy, if a club is certain a player will play, it does not list him on the Game Status Report—even if he appeared on that week’s Practice Report. The wording describes the club’s expectation, not a guarantee of performance or proof that the player is fully recovered. NFL injury-report policy
Practice status and game status are different
The NFL separates what a player did in practice from whether the club expects him to play. The league’s injury listing displays these as distinct fields.
| Report field | What it tells you | NFL categories or meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Practice status | How much the player participated during the practice week | Did Not Participate; Limited Participation (less than 100% of normal repetitions); Full Participation (100% of normal repetitions) |
| Game status | The club’s expected availability for the upcoming game | No designation if the club is certain the player will play; Questionable, Doubtful, or Out when applicable |
A player can be listed as a full participant while still being tracked on the Practice Report. Conversely, being absent from the Game Status Report signals expected availability; it does not certify that the injury is gone.

What Questionable, Doubtful, and Out mean
- Questionable: The player’s status is uncertain.
- Doubtful: The player is unlikely to participate.
- Out: The player will not play.
The NFL removed “Probable” from the Game Status Report in 2016. The Competition Committee said approximately 95% of players previously listed as Probable did play, citing that historical figure as a reason for the change. It is not a current-season estimate for any individual player. NFL Competition Committee announcement
Concussion clearance is a separate process
Being omitted from a routine Game Status Report should not be treated as evidence that a player has completed the NFL’s concussion return-to-participation process. A diagnosed player must complete a five-phase protocol before being cleared for full practice or participation. After the club physician clears full participation, an Independent Neurological Consultant must also clear the player. Until then, the player cannot return to contact practice or an NFL game. Game Status Reports are time-sensitive. NFL Football Operations’ 2026 important-dates page says clubs must update the report if a player’s condition changes after the initial filing.
