How NHL Coaches Decide Whether a Player Is a Healthy Scratch

NHL coaches have no published formula for healthy scratches. Their explanations point to performance, accountability, availability, lineup balance, resets, development and matchups.

A healthy scratch is a player who is available but left out of a team’s dressed lineup for a particular game. NHL coaches do not follow a published league-wide formula for making that choice: public explanations point to recent play, consistency, accountability, who else is available, the lineup a coach wants that night, and sometimes development or matchup considerations. A scratch alone does not prove a player is injured, being punished, or permanently demoted.

What does “healthy scratch” mean in hockey?

It means the player is not dressed for that game despite being available to play. It is a game-by-game lineup decision, not an NHL injury designation or a formal league penalty. A player’s absence does not by itself reveal whether the coach views it as a competitive choice, a short reset, a learning opportunity, or some combination.

The NHL’s Hockey Operations Guidelines cover roster limits and injured-reserve procedures; they do not prescribe a universal test for scratching a player. Under the guidelines, an injury warranting injured reserve is determined by club medical staff under club standards, and a player placed on injured reserve is ineligible to play for at least seven days. That is distinct from sitting out a game as a healthy scratch.

What factors can lead a coach to scratch a player?

There is no established league-wide ranking of reasons, and a coach’s public explanation may not disclose every internal consideration. Reported cases illustrate several factors that can overlap.

Recent play, consistency, and accountability

Coaches have described wanting more from a player, seeing a dip in performance, or expecting greater consistency and accountability. That does not mean points alone determine who sits. In a November 2023 case, Patrik Laine’s limited early-season production and prior in-game benchings were part of the context reported around his scratch; Columbus coach Pascal Vincent also said, “We need his skill level.” The account describes one player and situation, not a scoring threshold coaches apply across the NHL. NHL.com’s report on Laine provides that case’s context.

A reset or a message about expectations

A scratch can be intended as a chance to step back and regain form, or as a way to make expectations clear. In December 2023, Washington coach Spencer Carbery called Evgeny Kuznetsov’s scratch “Just a reset, a mental reset for him,” after discussing Kuznetsov’s struggle to find his game. At the time of that report, Kuznetsov had nine points—four goals and five assists—in 19 games. Those numbers describe his situation then; they do not establish a general trigger for scratches. NHL.com’s report records Carbery’s explanation.

Who is healthy and available

A coach also has to choose among the players available that night. A returning player, the available replacements, and the desired mix of positions can affect who dresses. Ottawa coach D.J. Smith said a lineup decision could depend on who was healthy and whether the team wanted an extra player available in case someone was hurt early. That is a practical roster consideration, not necessarily a judgment that the scratched player had performed poorly. The same NHL.com report describes Smith’s comments.

Development and the opponent

For a young player, sitting can be framed as a chance to observe, discuss the game, and learn before returning to the lineup. In April 2026, Rangers coach Mike Sullivan described sitting defenseman Drew Fortescue partly as a learning opportunity and cited Dallas’s size, strength, and speed. Sullivan said a player can benefit from “a different vantage point,” including talking through what to watch and reviewing film. Fortescue had played seven NHL games and recorded two points before that scratch; those details belong to this specific example, not a general rule for young players. The Hockey News’ account reports Sullivan’s rationale.

How to interpret a particular scratch

For a fan trying to understand why one player is out, treat the decision as a combination of three questions—not as a formal NHL procedure.

  1. Who is available? Check whether the player is described as injured or ill, whether another player is returning, and whether the coach has discussed lineup coverage. Do not infer an injury designation from absence alone.
  2. What does the coach want from the lineup tonight? Look for a stated reason such as recent form, consistency, accountability, a reset, team balance, or a challenge posed by the opponent. Attribute the explanation to the coach or player; do not present an inference as confirmed fact.
  3. What effect is the coach seeking? The stated aim may be to improve that night’s lineup, reinforce expectations, give a player a mental reset, or help a young player learn. These aims can overlap, and a public explanation need not reveal every private consideration.

There is no reliable league-wide statistic in the cited accounts that shows how often each factor causes a healthy scratch or how coaches weight them. A points total, a single coach’s explanation, or one team’s lineup choice should not be treated as a universal formula.

A scratch can surprise the player, too

Coaches and players may not experience the decision the same way. Taylor Hall said his November 2024 scratch was unexpected, while Chicago coach Luke Richardson acknowledged he might have communicated earlier and needed to learn how Hall preferred to handle such conversations. Hall said, “I’m not immune to coaching or immune to being held accountable.” At the time, Hall had six points—two goals and four assists—in 17 games, a snapshot of that season rather than proof that a particular points total causes a scratch. NHL.com’s report recounts Hall’s and Richardson’s comments.

Why the coach’s explanation matters

A coach’s comments are the best public evidence of the stated rationale, but they are not proof that it was the only factor. Sean Couturier, for example, said he understood Philadelphia coach John Tortorella’s explanation as putting “the best lineup available” on the ice to win after Couturier was scratched in March 2024. Tortorella had said he wanted more from several players. The account illustrates how a lineup decision can be framed around team objectives and expectations without establishing one universal cause. NHL.com’s report gives the context.
