If you want a satisfying SNES RPG without committing to a sprawling campaign, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is the clearest fit. Nintendo Life estimates a first playthrough of the original SNES game at about 15–17 hours. The Switch remake is a separate version, with a shorter estimated main story of about 10–12 hours.
Other SNES-era favorites offer different strengths—EarthBound’s offbeat modern setting, Secret of Mana’s cooperative action combat, or Final Fantasy IV’s traditional party adventure—but the available estimates do not establish them as equally short. Choose by combat style and tone as much as by the clock.
Which SNES RPG is the best short adventure?
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is the strongest recommendation when a bounded playtime is the priority. Nintendo Life estimates a first-time playthrough of the original SNES version at about 15–17 hours. That is an editorial estimate, not a guaranteed completion time; optional content and a player’s pace can change the total. Nintendo Life’s playtime guide gives a different estimate for the Switch remake, so do not apply that figure to the SNES cartridge.
The appeal is not just brevity: it is a more approachable, story-focused take on role-playing, with familiar Mario characters at its center. If your target is roughly 20–25 hours—or even around 30—this is a sensible first pick, while the games below are better treated as alternatives by mood and play style rather than as verified runtime matches.

How the options compare
| Game | Runtime evidence | Combat and appeal | Version or access note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars | Original SNES: about 15–17 hours for a first playthrough, estimated by Nintendo Life. Switch remake: about 10–12 hours for the main story, estimated by Nintendo Life; under 20 hours to include its challenges and secrets. GamesRadar+ separately estimates 12–15 hours for the Switch version. | Approachable, story-led RPG adventure. | The Switch release is a remake, not the original SNES game. Nintendo’s US product page lists its release date as November 17, 2023. |
| EarthBound | Not stated in the cited sources. | A near-normal modern setting made strange by unusual enemies and events. | Nintendo Life’s February 9, 2024 roundup listed it on Nintendo Switch Online; current catalog status and regional availability are not established here. |
| Secret of Mana | Not stated in the cited sources. | Action-RPG combat; its story can be played cooperatively with a friend, according to Nintendo Life. | A different fit from turn-based RPGs; the cited roundup does not establish current platform availability. |
| Final Fantasy IV (released in North America on SNES as Final Fantasy II) | No precise estimate established. A Reddit commenter placed it in a roughly 20–25-hour discussion; that is anecdotal, not a measured or authoritative runtime. | A conventional party-based RPG alternative. | Keep the North American SNES title in mind when searching for the original release. |
What each game is best for
Super Mario RPG: the most defensible pick for a shorter commitment
Nintendo Life’s original-SNES estimate makes this the only game in this group with a clearly supported short-playthrough figure for the cartridge itself. Its Switch remake also has separate estimates: Nintendo Life puts the main story at about 10–12 hours and the main story plus challenges and secrets under 20 hours. GamesRadar+ gives the Switch version a 12–15-hour estimate, published April 25, 2026. These are independent editorial estimates with different ranges, not a single verified consensus.
The Switch remake adds a Breezy difficulty option for players who want a story-focused experience or are new to RPGs. Nintendo describes it as making battles easier and leveling up faster on its official Super Mario RPG product page. That feature belongs to the Switch version; it should not be assumed to exist in the original SNES release.

EarthBound: choose it for an offbeat contemporary setting
EarthBound trades conventional fantasy scenery for a world close to ordinary life, then unsettles that familiarity with oddball enemies and events. Nintendo Life highlights that contrast in its SNES RPG roundup. The cited sources do not provide a comparable completion-time estimate, so pick it for its unusual tone, not on the assumption that it is as short as Super Mario RPG.
Secret of Mana: choose it for cooperative action combat
Nintendo Life notes that Secret of Mana can be played through with a friend. Its action-RPG combat makes it a meaningful alternative if you want cooperative play, but it is not the turn-based option a reader may have in mind when asking for a classic party RPG. No comparable runtime estimate is established in the cited sources.

Final Fantasy IV: choose it for a traditional party adventure
The North American SNES release was titled Final Fantasy II, so that is the name to look for when identifying the original cartridge. In a Reddit discussion about RPGs around 20–25 hours, one commenter mentioned it, but that anecdote does not substantiate a precise playtime or prove that it will fit a particular schedule. Treat it as a conventional alternative, not a confirmed short-RPG recommendation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to pick the right version
- Want the original SNES experience and a supported time estimate? Choose the original Super Mario RPG; Nintendo Life estimates about 15–17 hours for a first playthrough.
- Want a newer release with an easier, story-focused mode? The Switch remake has Breezy difficulty, which Nintendo says makes battles easier and leveling faster. Its main-story estimates are for the remake only.
- Want a setting unlike standard fantasy? Consider EarthBound, while checking whether it is currently available to you before relying on a subscription catalog.
- Want to play cooperatively? Secret of Mana is the action-RPG choice in this group that Nintendo Life identifies as playable with a friend.
- Want a conventional party-based RPG? Consider Final Fantasy IV, remembering its North American SNES name and the limits of the anecdotal runtime mention.
A Reddit request for “good 20 – 25 hour rpgs” captures the practical trade-off: a satisfying adventure without an “egregious” time commitment. That is one player’s request, not a representative survey, but it helps explain why a reliable short pick matters. By the evidence available here, Super Mario RPG is the clear answer; the rest are alternatives whose runtimes are not established on a comparable basis.
