NHL teams choose a starting goaltender game by game; there is no league-wide fixed rotation or single statistic that determines the decision. Coaches weigh the goalies’ relative ability and readiness against recovery time, workload, travel and the schedule. Back-to-backs often give both goalies a start, but the order depends on the team and situation.
What a starting goaltender means
A goalie can be a team’s primary or lead option without starting every game. The coach names a starter for each matchup based on who is available and ready, the demands of the schedule, and how the team wants to distribute work over the season. A capable second goalie makes it easier to share starts; a wider gap between the two options can make that balance harder.
Why teams rotate goalies
Recovery between games
Consecutive-day games create a natural opportunity to use both goalies, but a start is not the only way to give the other goalie rest. Seattle Kraken coverage describes teams managing practices by limiting unnecessary high-intensity repetitions for a starter. It also notes that a backup who is not scheduled to start may still warm up and need to be prepared to enter, so not dressing that goalie can provide a more complete night away from hockey. Roster depth can enable more involved approaches. In reporting on the 2025–26 season, NHL.com described teams with three goalies leaving a lead goalie out of the lineup on a non-start night, sending a backup ahead to the next city for a start, or dressing an extra goalie so the starter gets a full night off. These are roster-dependent examples, not standard practices at every club. NHL.com: goalie workload management in 2025–26

Relative ability and the cost of consecutive starts
When two goalies are close in expected performance, sharing starts may make sense if playing on consecutive days is expected to affect performance. A 2022 Seattle Kraken explainer reported that Eric Tulsky’s 2013 analysis found a save-percentage reduction of just over 11 percent for a goalie playing both nights of a back-to-back. The same explainer says later work by Andrew Thomas and Dom Luszczyszyn found the effect may be less significant. The figure is a historical study result reported by the Kraken, not a settled current estimate or a prediction for any individual goalie. Seattle Kraken: goalie workload management
Season-long workload and future demands
Coaches may also consider cumulative workload and whether keeping a lead goalie rested could help later in the season or during the playoffs. An NHL.com article published in 2019 reported two different historical averages for Cup-winning goalies: 44 regular-season games played among winners since 2009, and 46 regular-season starts among winners since 2003. The periods and measures differ, and neither average establishes an ideal workload or proves that limiting starts causes a championship. NHL.com: goalie workload management and Cup winners

Backup rhythm and confidence
Long gaps between starts can make it difficult for a backup to feel game-ready. NHL.com has described goalie-coach support, game-like drills and communication with the starter as ways to help a backup prepare and maintain confidence. Winnipeg Jets goalie Eric Comrie put the challenge this way: “The hardest part is definitely finding that game rhythm.” NHL.com: backup goalie preparation
Who starts first in a back-to-back?
There is no universal “backup first, starter second” rule. Sportsnet analyzed 95 back-to-back sets from the prior season involving teams whose goalie started at least 70 percent of games. The backup started first in 41 sets (43 percent), while the primary goalie started first in 54 (57 percent). The analysis, published in 2015, demonstrates that both sequences were used in that sample; it is not a current league-wide split or evidence of a standard strategy. What factors help explain a coach’s choice?
For a particular game, these questions help put the decision in context. They are useful explanatory factors, not a public formula that every team scores or weights identically.
- Rest: When did each goalie last play, and is the team in a run of consecutive games?
- Ability and readiness: How close are the options, and is either goalie returning from injury or in better current form?
- Workload: How much has the lead goalie played, and what future schedule demands might the coach be anticipating?
- Travel and roster depth: Can the team dress or call up another goalie, or arrange travel to support a scheduled starter’s rest?
- Backup rhythm: How long has the alternate goalie gone without a start, and what preparation is available?
How to read goalie statistics
NHL Stats lists measures such as games played, games started, saves, save percentage and goals-against average. Those numbers can show how a team has used its goalies and how they have performed, but they do not explain why a coach chose one starter for a specific game. The available evidence does not establish a current league-wide percentage for fixed rotation patterns or a single workload threshold that applies to all goalies. NHL Stats: goalies
