A goalie’s start count shows how often they begin games; save percentage (SV%) shows what share of shots on goal they stop. They measure different things: starts describe deployment, while SV% is saves divided by shots faced.
What does GS mean for a goalie?
GS means games started: the number of games a goalie begins in net. A start is a workload and deployment statistic, not a measure of how well the goalie played.
A goalie who enters after the game has begun makes an appearance, but did not begin that game. Teams may also split starts between two goalies over a season. NHL coverage has described both a change of goalie between playoff games and a regular-season timeshare; the same article describes a goalie serving as a 1B option before starting a later game. NHL.com’s April 28, 2026 goalie-usage coverage provides those examples.
In unusual cases—such as a substitution before the opening faceoff or before the first shot—the precise official attribution of a start is not established by the sources cited here. The ordinary distinction is straightforward: a starter is the goalie selected to begin the game; an appearance alone does not mean a start.

The NHL defines save percentage as saves divided by shots faced. The result is usually written as a decimal: .910 means the goalie stopped 91.0% of the shots on goal they faced. The NHL glossary also defines a shot on goal as a shot that enters the net or would have entered if the goalie had not stopped it.
For example, if a goalie stops 27 of 30 shots faced, the calculation is 27 ÷ 30 = .900, or 90.0%. In this simplified example, the other three shots became goals. The decimal is a rate, not a count of saves.

What counts as a shot faced?
The denominator is shots on goal faced, not every attempt directed toward the net. A blocked attempt is not added to a goalie’s shots-faced total simply because it was aimed toward the goal. This distinction matters when reading SV%: it describes results on shots that count as shots on goal, rather than all offensive attempts.
Does a goalie get a start if they come in during a game?
No. A goalie who replaces the starter during a game can appear in that game without having begun it, so the appearance does not become a start. The two statistics capture different information: starts count games begun, and SV% is calculated from saves and shots faced. A relief appearance can contribute to the goalie’s game statistics without changing the meaning of either measure.

There is no single cutoff established here for what makes a goalie’s SV% “good.” The percentage is easiest to interpret alongside its sample size, competition, and situation. A number accumulated over a small number of shots can shift substantially with a few additional saves or goals, so do not treat a brief run as directly equivalent to a full-season record.
The NHL Records page sets minimums for its own regular-season record categories: 100 games for career save-percentage records and 25 games for season records. Those are qualifications for appearing in those record categories, not a general rule for evaluating every goalie or deciding when a sample is meaningful. NHL goaltender records lists the thresholds.

For a useful comparison, line up both the statistic and the context. Starts and appearances show workload and deployment; SV% shows the share of shots on goal stopped. Compare goalies in the same competition setting and, where possible, the same season, and note how many shots or games support the percentage.
- Overall SV%: the share of all shots on goal faced that were stopped.
- Situation-specific SV%: a rate limited to a named game situation, such as 5-on-5 or close situations.
- Shot-location or danger splits: rates for specified shot types or locations, which are not interchangeable with overall SV%.
NHL EDGE coverage reports overall and split measures, including 5-on-5, close-situation, high-danger, midrange, and long-range save percentages. It defines close situations as a tied game in the first or second period, or a game within one goal in the third period. Those splits have their own conditions; call out the specific one rather than presenting it as a goalie’s unqualified “save percentage.” Rankings and figures in that April 28, 2026 article describe the 2026 playoffs, not an evergreen standard.

Season-specific values illustrate why context matters: the same NHL coverage reports a .903 save percentage for Minnesota’s goalie tandem over the 2025–26 regular season and .929 for Jesper Wallstedt in the 2026 postseason. They describe different samples and settings, so neither number is a permanent benchmark for what counts as a good NHL SV%.
