An NHL team’s coach and staff decide which goaltender starts: the goalie who begins the game in net. They may weigh rest, workload, schedule, performance, the strength of the goalie tandem and, in the playoffs, the series situation. Public sources describe those considerations, but there is no established league-wide formula requiring teams to use them in a particular order.
What does it mean to start an NHL game?
A goalie start means the goaltender is assigned to begin the game in net. It is a specific designation, not a synonym for appearing in the game. The NHL glossary defines a game played more broadly: “A player receives credit for playing in a game if i) he steps on the ice during time played or; ii) serves any penalty.” That means a goalie who enters after the opening can be credited with playing without having started.
Starting also does not guarantee the goalie will receive the win or loss. The NHL glossary says: “A goaltender receives a win, tie or loss if he is on the ice when either the game-winning or game-tying goal is scored.” The result depends on who is in net when the decisive goal is scored, not simply who began the game. See the NHL hockey glossary.
Who chooses the starting goalie?
The club’s coach and staff make the choice. NHL.com’s Seattle Kraken coverage describes “Who is your starting goaltender?” as a regular question at pre-game press conferences, but neither that coverage nor the cited league materials establish a mandatory NHL-wide selection formula. Teams can weigh the same considerations differently depending on their personnel and circumstances.

What factors can affect the decision?
Rest and the schedule
Back-to-back games—two games on consecutive days—often prompt teams to split starts between their two rostered goaltenders. In Seattle Kraken coverage of the 2021–22 season, head coach Dave Hakstol described the practice this way: “Typically you’re going to have a split on the back-to-backs.” That is an account of a common approach, not an NHL rule requiring a rotation.
Workload and recovery
Clubs may manage a goalie’s cumulative playing time to preserve performance over a long season or a playoff run. They may also consider whether the goalie needs additional recovery. An NHL feature describes teams experimenting with giving heavily used goalies more rest, including situations in which a team does not dress that goalie for a game when roster circumstances allow. The same feature reports Avalanche coach Jared Bednar’s explanation for dressing the other two goalies and Canucks coach Rick Tocchet’s comments about rest. Those examples illustrate team choices rather than a league-wide workload threshold.

Recent and longer-term performance
Performance and results can shape who gets the next start, but they do not yield one universal decision rule. Seattle Kraken coverage says playoff decisions may account for performance, analytics and whether the team is winning. A coach might continue with a goalie who is playing well—the familiar “hot hand” approach—or turn to the other goalie in a tandem.
The strength of the tandem
How evenly matched the available goalies are affects a team’s flexibility. A club with a close “1A” and “1B” tandem may have more room to distribute starts than one with a clearly dominant starter. The labels describe a team’s practical depth-chart roles; the cited coverage does not establish them as formal NHL designations.

Playoff and series circumstances
In the playoffs, the choice can reflect the goalie’s performance, the team’s results and the state of the series. A coach may stick with a successful starter or make a change as circumstances shift. Seattle’s reporting presents these as factors that can matter, not as a fixed playoff hierarchy.
How teams compare two goalie options
When a coach has two realistic choices, the relevant trade-offs can be organized around the factors described in team and league coverage. This is a way to understand a decision, not a scoring system that every club uses.

| Consideration | What it can tell a team |
|---|---|
| Recent and season-long performance | How each goalie has been playing; a recent run may matter alongside the broader record. |
| Workload and recovery | Whether one goalie has had a heavier stretch or may benefit from more rest. |
| Schedule | Whether the game is part of a back-to-back, when teams commonly split starts. |
| Tandem balance | How much flexibility the club has to share starts between two comparably capable goalies. |
| Playoff or series situation | Whether performance, team results or the circumstances of the series favor staying with a goalie or making a change. |
No single factor has an established, universal weight across NHL teams. A choice can reflect several of them at once.

NHL hockey operations guidelines require each club to have a roster of at least 20 players, including 18 skaters and two goaltenders. That establishes a roster minimum; it does not dictate which goalie starts a particular game. The NHL hockey operations guidelines provide the roster details.

Separately, NHL.com reported that for the 2026–27 season each team is required to have an emergency backup goalie (EBUG) on its roster, subject to eligibility restrictions described in that report. An EBUG is distinct from the team’s ordinary starter-and-backup assignment; this season-specific requirement should not be read as a general description of every prior season. See NHL.com’s report on the 2026–27 emergency backup goalie requirement.
