Yes: in supported Nintendo Switch Sports play, two people can share a single Joy-Con by passing it between them. Controller needs and player limits depend on the sport, so one Joy-Con is not a universal setup for every activity. You can play together on one console, or connect multiple consoles over a wired local network for LAN play.
Can two people share one Joy-Con?
Yes. Nintendo describes passing a Joy-Con to a friend for 1v1, 2v2, or free-for-all play on its Nintendo Switch Sports product page. That is a general description of shared play, not a promise that every sport supports every format or uses identical controls.

Controller compatibility changes with the selected sport. Nintendo lists paired Joy-Con 2 or paired Joy-Con, as well as a single Joy-Con 2 or single Joy-Con, among the supported configurations. The game may call for one of these arrangements depending on the sport. Check the selected sport’s setup instructions rather than assuming each player needs a pair—or that one controller will work for every activity.

Same-console local play means everyone plays on one system using its locally connected controllers. This is different from LAN play, which links multiple consoles over a wired network. For an informal shared-controller session, Nintendo’s product-page description is the simple version: pass a Joy-Con between friends when the chosen sport and format support it.

Nintendo Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode, according to Nintendo Support’s game FAQ. Nintendo recommends TV Mode for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch – OLED Model. The compatible controller types include Joy-Con 2 or Joy-Con, used singly or as a pair depending on sport; Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible.
How many people can play locally?
There is no single player maximum that applies to every local setup and sport. In LAN play, Nintendo Support documents a ceiling of four consoles and two players per console, or up to eight participants overall. The number who can play simultaneously depends on the sport, so the eight-person figure is a maximum across the LAN setup, not a guarantee that every sport supports eight players at once. Nintendo’s game FAQ and LAN play instructions are the references for sport-specific and setup details.

Same-console play versus LAN play
| Arrangement | What it means | Controllers and players | Network and copies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same-console local play | Players use one Switch system. | Controller configuration depends on the sport; supported play can use a single Joy-Con or paired Joy-Con. | No multi-console LAN setup is involved. |
| LAN play | Several Switch consoles join over the same wired local network. | Nintendo allows up to four consoles and two players per console, up to eight total; the sport sets the simultaneous player limit. | Nintendo’s instructions require wired networking and a copy of Nintendo Switch Sports for each participating console. A LAN adapter may be needed depending on the console and dock. |
For LAN, Nintendo’s instructions have each console choose Single Player or Two Players, then create or join a room. Start the match after the party has assembled. These instructions describe a wired local network; do not treat LAN as a synonym for wireless local play or online play.
Does local multiplayer require Nintendo Switch Online?
Nintendo says an active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play Nintendo Switch Sports online. That condition is for online play; Nintendo’s cited local and LAN setup instructions do not state the same online-membership requirement for those arrangements. Nintendo’s FAQ also says Play with Friends voice chat is available through the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app, and Nintendo Accounts belonging to children under 13 cannot use that voice-chat feature. Nintendo Switch 2 supports chatting with friends through GameChat while playing.

When the Soccer Leg Strap matters
The Leg Strap is an optional Soccer control arrangement, not a general requirement for local multiplayer. Nintendo says to select Leg-Strap Mode from the controller instruction screen in Play Locally or Play with Friends by pressing +; in Play Globally, choose the control option from the sport-selection screen. Joy-Con 2 controllers do not work with the Leg Strap, according to Nintendo’s FAQ.
