The original Tetris is 42 years, 4 months, and 2 days old as of October 8, 2026, counting from June 6, 1984—the anniversary date used by The Tetris Company.
When was the original Tetris made?
Alexey Pajitnov developed the first version of Tetris in Moscow in 1984 for the Electronika 60. The Tetris Company treats June 6, 1984 as the game’s birth date; its June 6, 2024 announcement marked the 40th anniversary. The company’s history identifies the year and computer, while its 40th-anniversary announcement establishes the June 6 date.
Using that anniversary convention, the original is 42 years old in 2026. Its precise age on October 8, 2026 is 42 years, 4 months, and 2 days.
Does that mean Tetris was released in 1984?
Not worldwide as a commercial PC release. The first Electronika 60 version is distinct from the later ports and launches listed in the official timeline:

- 1985: Tetris is ported to the IBM PC.
- 1987: The game launches on PCs in North America and Europe.
So, when asking how old the original Tetris is, the relevant date is the first version’s 1984 birth—not the later IBM PC port or regional PC launches.
