The games arrived first; the anime then gave Pikachu a recurring, prominent role that helped turn a game character into the face many people associate with Pokémon. Official creator material describes Pikachu’s design origins, but the available official accounts do not fully explain why the anime team chose it for that role.
Pikachu appeared in the games before the anime
Pokémon Red Version and Pokémon Green Version launched in Japan for Game Boy in February 1996. The Japanese Pokémon television anime followed in April 1997, a little over a year later. That chronology rules out the idea that the anime created Pikachu first: it was a character from the original game era.
The Pokémon Company’s official history records these launch dates: History.
What the creators say about Pikachu’s origins
The Pokémon Company International’s creator profile features Ken Sugimori, Koji Nishino, and Atsuko Nishida discussing Pikachu’s creation. Its account describes early design work, including Sugimori’s perspective on designing Pokémon, and connects the Game Boy’s dot drawings with the yellow used in Pikachu’s official art.

The profile also says that Satoshi Tajiri, who wrote the setting text, made a decision about Pikachu. Its wording is: “Tajiri [the president of GAME FREAK], who wrote the setting text, made that decision.” This is creator testimony about Pikachu’s design and game development; it does not establish that Tajiri selected Pikachu as the anime’s mascot or explain the anime team’s casting rationale. Read the profile at Creator Profile: The Creators of Pikachu.
How the anime helped make Pikachu the face of Pokémon
When the anime began, Pikachu received a recurring, prominent role. That sustained exposure helps explain how a character from the games became the franchise’s most recognizable face. This is a reasonable reading of the sequence and the character’s role, not proof of a documented selection process or a measured popularity result.

The official history dates the Japanese anime’s launch to April 1997. The Pokémon Company’s history also places the first U.S. animated-series launch in 1998, specifying September alongside the U.S. releases of Red and Blue. The Pokémon Company International’s history likewise dates the U.S. animated-series launch to 1998. The character’s visibility therefore expanded through the series as it reached new audiences, but the available official timelines do not name who proposed Pikachu as Ash’s partner or give the exact reasons for the choice.
Was Pikachu always intended to be the mascot?
The available official creator material documents Pikachu’s development as a game character; it does not establish that the character was always planned to represent the entire franchise. Nor do these sources confirm familiar claims that an official survey, focus group, or popularity poll chose Pikachu. The strongest supported explanation is more modest: Pikachu existed in the games first, then the anime gave it a recurring central presence that helped make it widely recognizable.

How Pokémon’s later growth reinforced Pikachu’s prominence
Pokémon Center Co., Ltd. was established in 1998 by Nintendo, Creatures, and GAME FREAK. It became The Pokémon Company in October 2000 and expanded into overall brand management, according to the company’s official history. That institutional development helps explain how Pokémon could manage the franchise across different activities, but it is later context—not evidence of the original anime casting decision.
The Pokémon Company International describes merchandise categories including plush, figures, clothing, accessories, home décor, and books in its About Us overview. Such licensing and brand activity can keep a character visible well beyond a television episode or game. It helps explain how Pikachu’s prominence could endure, without proving why the anime initially gave it that role.
