Sony owns the studio and develops its games within PlayStation Studios, but platform availability is decided title by title. Official listings show Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered on both PlayStation and PC, while Sony described Marvel’s Wolverine as worldwide PS5-exclusive on September 18, 2026. The reliable way to judge any Insomniac game is to check its current official platform listing and the date of that statement.
The direct answer: ownership is not the same as permanent exclusivity
Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) agreed to acquire Insomniac Games in its entirety in August 2019 and add it to SIE Worldwide Studios. Sony said the move would strengthen development for PlayStation platforms. That establishes Insomniac as a PlayStation studio, but the announcement does not publish a single contract covering every past or future game.

In practice, Insomniac games can follow different release patterns:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- A game may launch on a PlayStation console and later receive a PC version.
- A game may be listed on PlayStation and PC at the same time in the studio’s current catalog.
- Sony may describe a specific title as exclusive to a PlayStation console at a particular date.
Those descriptions are not interchangeable. “PlayStation exclusive” should always identify the game, the platforms covered, and the date of the claim.

What Sony’s 2019 acquisition actually changed
Insomniac became part of PlayStation’s studio organization
SIE’s August 20, 2019 announcement said it had entered definitive agreements to acquire Insomniac “in its entirety.” It described Insomniac as SIE Worldwide Studios’ 14th studio and said the acquisition furthered Sony’s commitment to game development for PlayStation platforms. The announcement also expected day-to-day operations to remain with Insomniac’s existing management, working with SIE Worldwide Studios’ San Mateo Studio. Read the official acquisition announcement.
What the announcement did not establish
The acquisition release is corporate context, not a catalog of licensing, publishing or platform clauses for each game. It does not state that every Insomniac title must remain on PlayStation forever, nor does it promise a standard delay before a PC release. A studio’s ownership and a game’s release rights are related, but they are not proof of identical terms for every title.
How to read “exclusive” without overclaiming
Console exclusivity
When a source says a game is exclusive to PS5, it is making a platform statement for that console ecosystem at that time. Sony’s September 18, 2026 article described Marvel’s Wolverine as available worldwide exclusively on PlayStation 5. That is a dated status, not a guarantee that no future platform announcement can change it.

PlayStation-first or timed availability
A game can be a PlayStation launch title and later reach PC. A later PC release does not erase the fact that the game was initially available through PlayStation, but it does mean “only on PlayStation” is no longer accurate for the current catalog. The reviewed official sources do not publish a universal exclusivity window or a standard number of months between console and PC releases.
Platform listing versus legal exclusivity
An official store or studio page listing PS5 and PC proves those platforms are supported at the time shown. It does not disclose every contractual detail, such as an earlier console-only period or the duration of an agreement. Use the narrow wording the source supports: “listed for PS5 and PC,” “later released on PC,” or “described as PS5-exclusive on [date].”
Insomniac games: a dated platform comparison
| Game | Official platform evidence | Release or listing timing | Safest description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marvel’s Spider-Man series | PlayStation’s series page says the PlayStation games were developed by Insomniac and that PC versions were ported by Nixxes Software; the page lists PC availability. PlayStation series page | Current page status; no single universal PC timetable is stated. | Available on PlayStation and PC, with Insomniac developing the PlayStation games and Nixxes handling PC ports. |
| Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 | Insomniac’s games page lists PS5 and PC. PlayStation announced the PC edition on October 18, 2024. Insomniac Games catalog · PC announcement | PC launch announced for January 30, 2025; the announcement said Nixxes led PC development and optimization with Insomniac, PlayStation and Marvel Games. | It launched on PS5 and later arrived on PC in January 2025. |
| Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart | Insomniac lists PS5 and PC. PlayStation announced the PC version for July 26, 2023. Insomniac Games catalog · PC announcement | PC version announced May 30, 2023, for July 26, 2023. | It was a PlayStation release that later became available on PC. |
| Marvel’s Wolverine | Sony’s corporate article reported worldwide PS5 exclusivity. Sony’s September 18, 2026 report | Status stated September 18, 2026. | Sony described it as PS5-exclusive in that dated report. |
The table separates four different kinds of evidence: a live catalog listing, a dated PC announcement, a later release date and an explicit “exclusive” description. Treating them as if they were the same would produce an inaccurate studio-wide rule.

What each example tells you
Marvel’s Spider-Man series
PlayStation’s official series page directly addresses who makes the games and whether they are available on PC. It identifies Insomniac as the developer of the PlayStation games and Nixxes Software as the team that ported the PC versions. Because the page presents the series as available on PC, “PlayStation-only” is not a safe description of the series as a whole.

The series page is a live source, so its platform display can change. For a purchase decision, check the individual game listing and edition rather than assuming every entry has identical availability.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
PlayStation announced the PC version on October 18, 2024, with a January 30, 2025 launch. The announcement credited Nixxes with leading PC development and optimization in collaboration with Insomniac, PlayStation and Marvel Games. Insomniac’s own catalog now lists the game for PS5 and PC. The evidence supports a PS5 launch followed by a PC release; it does not establish a permanent console-only term or a repeatable delay formula for future games.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
PlayStation announced the PC version on May 30, 2023, for July 26, 2023. Insomniac’s current games page lists PS5 and PC. This is a clear example of a game that began as a PlayStation release and later expanded to PC, so a historical statement about its original platform should not be presented as its current platform limit.
Marvel’s Wolverine
Sony’s September 18, 2026 corporate article states that Marvel’s Wolverine was available worldwide exclusively on PlayStation 5. The article also says Insomniac is part of PlayStation Studios, the global network of development studios within SIE. Keep the date attached to the exclusivity statement: the source records the status on September 18, 2026, and future announcements could alter it.

Why PC ports do not create a universal Insomniac schedule
The Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank examples show that PC versions can follow PlayStation releases, but the official material does not state a fixed port timetable. The dates differ: Rift Apart’s PC release was announced for July 2023, while Spider-Man 2’s PC release was announced for January 2025. Those are title-specific announcements, not evidence of a standard two-year, one-year or any other delay.

Nixxes’ involvement explains who handled the PC work in the cited Spider-Man announcement and who ported the Spider-Man series according to PlayStation’s FAQ. It does not mean every Insomniac game will receive a PC version, that every port will launch on the same storefronts, or that a future port has been promised.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical method for checking an Insomniac game
- Identify the exact title and edition. Do not rely on “the Spider-Man games” or “an Insomniac game” when platform rights can differ by entry.
- Open the current official listing. Check the game’s PlayStation page, Insomniac’s Games catalog or a dated PlayStation announcement.
- Record every listed platform. Write down PS5, PS4, PC or any other platform exactly as displayed. A listing is stronger evidence than an assumption based on the developer’s ownership.
- Capture the evidence date. A live page can change, while an announcement records what was planned or released at a specific time.
- Distinguish announcement from release. A PC announcement is not the same as a completed PC launch. For example, the Spider-Man 2 announcement named January 30, 2025 as the launch date, while the Rift Apart announcement named July 26, 2023.
- Use qualified language. Say “listed for PS5 and PC,” “PC version announced,” or “described as PS5-exclusive on [date].” Avoid “all Insomniac games are exclusive” unless an official source explicitly makes that studio-wide claim.
Insomniac’s place in PlayStation’s catalog
Sony’s 2019 acquisition announcement reported that Marvel’s Spider-Man had sold through more than 13.2 million copies worldwide as of July 28, 2019. That is a historical sales figure, not a current total. The same announcement said Insomniac had received 20 workplace-culture awards since 2005; that is also the figure stated at the time, not an updated count. Both numbers provide context for why Sony highlighted the studio, but neither determines where a particular game may be released.
Ted Price, Insomniac’s founder and CEO at the time, said that joining the Worldwide Studios family gave Insomniac greater opportunities to pursue its studio vision. Sony’s corporate relationship therefore matters for development strategy and resources, while the platform question remains title-specific.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat could change after the stated dates
Platform status is not permanent simply because a page once used the word “exclusive.” Sony’s Wolverine statement is explicitly dated, and Insomniac’s catalog is a live listing. A later PC announcement, remaster, sequel or platform update could change what is currently available. Conversely, the absence of a PC listing is not proof that a port has been ruled out; the reviewed sources do not publish a universal policy for unannounced platforms.
For the most accurate answer, treat exclusivity as a dated snapshot: title, platform, evidence date and statement type. That approach explains why Insomniac can be fully integrated into PlayStation Studios while some games are also sold on PC and another title is described as PS5-exclusive.
