Difficulty and modifiers are related but distinct: the difficulty setting establishes the challenge, while each available modifier adds its own effect. Use the on-screen descriptions and forecast to decide whether the setup suits your Power, build, fireteam, and goal.
What are Portal difficulty modifiers?
The Portal is Destiny 2’s activity hub. Its PvE categories include Solo Ops, Fireteam Ops, Arena Ops, and Pinnacle Ops; the broader menu also includes Crucible Ops and Gambit Ops. Bungie describes the PvE activity areas as offering customizable difficulty and modifiers. The choices are activity-dependent, so the customization screen for the activity you selected is the authority on what you can change.

Bungie Help says players can select from six difficulty settings as their Power progresses. The available modifier options can have positive or negative effects. Together, your choices affect combatant difficulty and the score used to forecast rewards. A modifier is therefore not simply another rung on a difficulty ladder: read its individual description to understand what it changes.
How to choose difficulty and modifiers
- Choose a Portal activity. Open the activity category and select the activity you intend to play. Available customization choices vary by activity.
- Select a difficulty setting. The settings available to you depend on Power progression. Check the selected activity’s displayed difficulty information rather than assuming a tier name or Power difference from an older guide still applies.
- Inspect each available modifier. Read its description and consider its gameplay effect alongside the difficulty. Do not treat the number of selected modifiers as a goal in itself.
- Review the activity information and reward forecast. Use the displayed challenge and projected reward outcome to judge whether the setup is worthwhile for your current progression and loot goals.
- Launch only when the trade-off fits your fireteam. Consider whether your loadout, experience, and coordination are suitable for the additional mechanics or challenge.
How to read the reward forecast
The customization view previews available rewards and helps connect the selected challenge to a projected reward outcome. Bungie’s general guidance is that higher difficulty usually improves prospects for gear, Power, and currency, but a forecast is not a guarantee that every listed reward will drop. The effects of individual modifiers also matter, so compare both the challenge and projected score or grade rather than choosing the hardest-looking setup automatically.

- From the makers of the acclaimed hit game Destiny, comes the much-anticipated sequel
- An action shooter that takes you on an epic journey across the solar system
- Humanity’s last safe city has fallen to an overwhelming invasion force, led by Ghaul, the imposing commander of the brutal Red Legion
- To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity’s scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home
For a useful comparison between two setups, look at the activity’s displayed combatant difficulty and any Power constraint, what each modifier actually changes, the forecast score or grade, and whether the projected reward type advances your goal. Also account for whether your fireteam can handle the added mechanics. These are practical comparison points; not every item is necessarily exposed as a separate numeric field in the current interface.
What changed in the 2026 Portal overhaul?
Bungie’s May 21, 2026 overview said it had made a deep pass on Portal difficulty to reduce choice paralysis and discourage stacking modifiers simply to chase desirable rewards. That makes older descriptions of the launch-era customization system historical, not a reliable guide to every current option.

In particular, at Portal’s July 2025 launch Bungie described four customization sections—Difficulty Tiers, Activity Modifiers, Activity Preview, and Reward Forecast—and modifier categories including Challenges, Banes, Boons, Player Stakes, and static Rules. The launch design also used a fireteam-based Challenge Multiplier and player-based Reward Multiplier to inform Reward Score. Bungie later changed how Challenge modifiers affected combatant delta in certain activities. Those labels and rules explain an earlier version of the system; the available current sources do not establish that they remain unchanged after the 2026 overhaul.
Bungie’s June 9, 2026 update 9.7.0 specifically removed the selected-difficulty cap on Portal reward Power. It said A grades or higher could continue to provide positive Power progression up to the 550 Power hard cap, with higher grades providing larger Power bonuses. This is a dated progression rule, not a complete current guide to all reward types or modifier effects.

What current details are not established?
Bungie Help confirms six difficulty settings but does not identify their precise current names, Power deltas, or a complete current modifier glossary. The 2026 overview confirms a substantial overhaul without supplying a full post-overhaul table. For exact values and effects, use the descriptions and forecast shown in your current in-game activity customization screen; avoid relying on specific tier numbers or modifier counts from 2025 coverage.
