Enshrouded splits progression between your character and the world you are playing in. Your Flameborn keeps equipment, inventory, level, and skills when moving between servers. The server or world keeps discoveries, unlocked areas, buildings, and shared world-quest progress. In practical terms, your character is portable, while each world is a separate shared campaign.

That distinction explains why a well-equipped character can join a friend’s new world without resetting, yet still encounter unopened locations and unfinished world objectives. Dedicated servers preserve the world’s progress for asynchronous groups, while newer quest-journal options help players recover Embervale quests they missed.

The two progression layers
Enshrouded multiplayer uses two save layers rather than one universal campaign. Character data belongs to the individual player. World data belongs to the hosted world. The official dedicated-server documentation states that character save-games are not stored on the dedicated server, whereas world progression is stored there.

This is why bringing a high-level Flameborn into a friend’s early world does not automatically complete that world’s story. You retain your own power and supplies, but the destination world still determines which places, objectives and shared events are available.

What your character carries between servers
Gear, inventory and level
Your equipped weapons, armor and other gear remain part of your character. Items in your inventory and your accumulated character level also travel with you. A character developed in a solo world can therefore join a peer-hosted session or a dedicated server without starting at level one.
Portable equipment does not mean every world challenge is already solved. A stronger character may be able to defeat early enemies quickly, but the destination world’s discoveries and objectives are still controlled by that world’s save.

Skills and skill points
Unlocked skills are character progression, so they move with the character as well. However, skill-build advice must be dated. Update 8, Forging the Path, reworked the skill tree and gear progression. Existing characters had their skill trees reset and received refunded points the first time they loaded after the update. If a guide describes a pre-Update-8 layout, treat it as historical rather than a current build recommendation.
What the world or server remembers
Shared discoveries and world state
The world save records the campaign’s shared state: discovered locations, opened routes, constructed bases and other changes made to that particular world. Every player entering that world sees the state the host or dedicated server has saved.

A different world has its own state. Joining another server does not merge the two maps, copy buildings across them or make the new world’s quests match your old campaign. The character arrives with portable progression; the world supplies its own history.
Peer-hosted worlds
In a normal multiplayer session, one player’s game hosts the world. The host’s world save is the persistent campaign for that session. If the host is not playing, the group generally cannot access that same peer-hosted world unless the host starts it again.

A dedicated server keeps the world running independently of a particular player’s game. World progression is retained on that server, while each player’s character save remains on the player’s side. A dedicated server therefore solves availability and world persistence; it does not replace portable character progression or turn characters into server-owned avatars.
How quests behave in multiplayer
The original shared-quest model
Keen Games initially described Enshrouded as a co-op game designed around progressing together. Much of the quest handling was server-side, so the group commonly advanced through the same world objectives at the same time. If one player had already pushed the campaign forward, another player joining that world could find the shared world state ahead of their personal experience.

Individual completion for missed Embervale quests
The Melodies of the Mire update, released June 5, 2024, added an important exception. Missed Embervale quests can appear in an individual player’s quest journal and be toggled on, allowing that player to complete them with or without friends. This provides a way to recover personal quest completion and associated rewards after joining late or missing a session.
The option does not convert the entire campaign into separate, fully independent stories. Shared world progression still advances in the world save. Think of the missed-quest feature as a personal recovery path layered on top of a shared campaign, not as a guarantee that every quest and reward is isolated from everyone else.
A reliable group routine
- Before a major story session, identify the world owner. On a peer-hosted game, that is the player whose world save will advance. On a dedicated server, the server world is the shared reference.
- Tell the group which quests are being pushed. This prevents a late player from assuming that an objective remains available in the shared world when it has already been completed.
- After joining, open the quest journal. Check whether missed Embervale quests are listed and toggle an eligible quest on when you need to complete it personally.
- Coordinate rewards and progression goals. A player can recover missed personal quest progress, but the group should still agree on which shared objectives to complete for the world.
- Keep important characters backed up according to your platform’s normal save practices. Character and world data are separate, so protecting only one save type may not protect the campaign you care about.
Choosing between a peer host and a dedicated server

When a dedicated server is worth it
Choose a dedicated server when players regularly play at different times and need the same world to remain accessible. It keeps the world campaign available without requiring the original peer host to be online. Before the first major quest push, agree on who can advance story objectives, how missed quests will be handled and whether the group wants to preserve certain discoveries for a shared playthrough.
When peer hosting is enough
Peer hosting is simpler when the same people meet at roughly the same time and one player is comfortable owning the world save. It avoids the need to maintain a separate always-on world, but the campaign’s availability follows the host’s schedule.

How party size changes progression pressure and rewards
Multiplayer is not merely solo play with extra characters. Keen Games says enemy strength scales with group size, and larger groups have an increased chance for chests and bosses to contain bonus loot. The official Pact of the Flame material describes multiplayer for up to 16 players.

More players can make combat more demanding because encounters adjust to the group. A party that splits roles and focuses targets may handle that pressure better than several uncoordinated players attacking independently. Expect the difficulty curve to reflect the number of participants rather than assuming that additional players always make every fight easier.
Bonus-loot opportunities
Group size also affects reward opportunities: chests and bosses have a higher chance to contain bonus loot in a larger party. This is a chance-based benefit, not a promise that every chest or boss will produce an extra item. Plan roles and inventory space accordingly, especially when a large group is exploring a newly opened area.
Joining another server: what to expect
- Select the destination world or server. Confirm whether it is a friend’s peer-hosted world or a dedicated server, because availability and ownership differ.
- Enter with the intended character. Your equipment, inventory, level and skills come with that character.
- Compare the world’s state with your expectations. Locations, structures and shared objectives belong to the destination world, not to the character.
- Open the quest journal and inspect missed Embervale quests. Toggle an eligible missed quest if you need individual completion.
- Ask the group before advancing a major objective. A quest action can change the shared world state for everyone using that world.
Common scenarios
A high-level player joins a friend’s new world
The joining player keeps their gear, inventory, level and skills. The friend’s world remains at its own discovery and quest state. The experienced player can help with combat and building, but does not automatically import the old world’s map progress.

A player misses a weekend story session
When that player next joins, the shared world may already be farther ahead. The player should check the quest journal for missed Embervale quests and enable an eligible entry for individual completion. The group should still clarify which world objectives have already been completed and which remain communal goals.
Friends play on different schedules
A dedicated server is the better structural fit because the world remains available without the original peer host. Character progression continues to travel with each player, while the server preserves one persistent shared world.
A player wants to start a separate campaign without abandoning an established character
Use the same character in the new world if you want its portable equipment, inventory, level and skills. Expect the new world to have its own discoveries, structures and quest state. Keeping campaigns mentally separate avoids treating a character transfer as a world copy.
When technical problems look like progression problems
Lag or rubberbanding during multiplayer
Keen Games has documented networking work intended to reduce lag and rubberbanding, as well as CPU-optimization work for multiplayer hosts and dedicated servers. If players appear to lose position, fail to interact with objects or see delayed combat results, first determine whether the issue is synchronization rather than a missing quest or reset character.
- Have the host or server administrator check whether the problem affects everyone or only one player.
- Restart the session and verify that the same world is being loaded.
- Record whether the symptom occurs near a particular area, boss or large base.
- Do not delete a character or world save solely because a lag spike made progress appear to vanish.
Long shader compilation or poor performance
The developer has also noted continuing work on long VFX shader-compilation times and lower-end-PC performance. A long load or a temporary hitch can delay the appearance of an objective without changing the underlying save. Allow the process to finish, then verify the world and quest journal before assuming progression has been lost.

- Keep the layers straight: character progression travels; world progression stays with its world.
- Choose the host model around schedules: peer hosting suits synchronized sessions, while dedicated servers suit asynchronous groups.
- Set quest expectations before starting: decide which objectives are shared and use the missed-Embervale-quest option for eligible personal catch-up.
- Date skill-build advice: Update 8 changed the skill tree and refunded existing points on first load.
- Plan for scaled combat: larger parties face stronger enemies but can receive better bonus-loot chances.
- Separate technical symptoms from save state: lag, rubberbanding, shader compilation and low-end performance can make a working progression system look broken.
The practical verdict
Enshrouded’s multiplayer progression is shared at the world level and portable at the character level. Bring your developed Flameborn, gear and skills wherever you play, but expect each server to retain its own map, structures and shared campaign state. Use a dedicated server when availability across different schedules matters, and use the quest journal’s missed-Embervale-quest option when you need to recover personal quest progress after joining late. That combination gives groups a persistent world without forcing every player to attend every session.
