There is no verified percentage or “one in X” rate for finding a shiny Thestral in Hogwarts Legacy. Guides describe shiny beasts as random spawns, so the practical answer is that a shiny Thestral can take repeated checks at a den—and no known route guarantees one.
What makes a Thestral shiny?
A shiny Thestral is described as silver, rather than the ordinary green or brown coloring. Look for the star marker beside its name to confirm that it is shiny; color alone can be harder to judge in some lighting. Windows Central and Pro Game Guides describe the silver variant, while the star marker is also covered by GameSpot.
Where to look for shiny Thestrals
Guides identify two Thestral dens: one in North Ford Bog and another near Marunweem Lake. The latter is described using nearby Floo Flame landmarks by Pro Game Guides. Visit both if convenient; neither location is documented as having better shiny odds.
How to repeat den checks
Shiny hunting is a repeat-and-check routine, not a way to force a shiny spawn. GameSpot and Windows Central describe clearing beasts from a den, advancing the day/night cycle, saving and reloading, then checking the area again as creatures repopulate. The guides do not establish that every step is required or that it improves the probability for an individual beast.

- Travel to either Thestral den and check the group for a silver Thestral and star marker.
- If there is no shiny, clear some or all of the beasts so the den can repopulate.
- Change the day/night cycle, save, and reload; then return to check the den again.
- Repeat the checks or try the other den. Treat each visit as another chance, not a guaranteed reset for a shiny.
How to catch one without spooking it
Thestrals flee when approached. Pro Game Guides recommends using Disillusionment or an Invisibility Potion to get close, then Arresto Momentum before using the Nab-Sack. Confirm the star marker before spending time on the capture, especially if the silver coloring is difficult to see.
Wild hunting or breeding?
Wild den hunting and breeding are both discussed as possible ways to find a shiny, but neither has a documented success rate or guarantee.

| Route | What it involves | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Wild den hunting | Check the North Ford Bog or Marunweem Lake den and repeat checks after the area repopulates. | Shiny spawns are described as random; no numeric odds or guarantee are given. |
| Breeding | Use the breeding system with a pair of Thestrals. | Windows Central says shiny Thestrals can produce white shiny offspring, but gives no rate. GameSpot reported it had not observed shiny offspring when its guide was published in 2023. |
Because the accounts differ, treat shiny offspring as a possibility reported by Windows Central, not a dependable method. If you want a shiny, breeding should not replace checking wild dens.

The guides support the silver appearance, star marker, den locations, and suggested repeat-check routine. They do not provide a measured spawn-rate distribution, and the comparison sometimes made to shiny hunting in Pokémon is not a quantified estimate. No official developer statement or game-code data establishing shiny Thestral odds is cited in these guides. Their mechanics descriptions may also change with game updates, so version-specific behavior is not established here.
