Ditto is uncommon in Pokémon GO because it hides as certain wild Pokémon and does not reveal itself until you catch one. Niantic has not published a fixed spawn rate; the often-cited figure of about 2%—roughly one in 50 eligible encounters—is a community estimate, not an official or guaranteed current rate.
Why Ditto can be hard to find
In an ordinary wild encounter, Ditto appears on the map as one of its eligible disguises, not as Ditto. Catch the Pokémon to learn whether it transforms. Niantic says that if a particular disguised spawn is Ditto, other Trainers who encounter that same spawn will also see it reveal itself after capture. Niantic’s Ditto announcement describes the mechanic but does not give a numerical chance.

What are Ditto’s current disguises?
As of September 2026, Pokémon GO Hub lists these possible disguises:
- Mankey
- Growlithe
- Magnemite
- Voltorb
- Sentret
- Teddiursa
- Seedot
- Surskit
- Slakoth
This is a community-maintained, time-sensitive list, not a permanent official roster. Niantic event announcements show that Ditto can change disguises: the September 2025 Completely Normal event announced a disguise change that continued after the event, while the March 2026 Pokopia Celebration featured costumed Ditto and a temporary disguise-pool change. What does the 2% estimate mean?
A 2022 Silph Research Group discussion reports that around 2% of encounters with eligible disguise species turn out to be Ditto—often simplified to about one in 50. Treat that as a community-reported estimate, not an official Niantic rate or a promise about your next catch. It applies to eligible disguises, not every wild Pokémon, and the actual wait depends on which eligible species are spawning and whether an event changes the pool or chance. The Silph Research Group discussion gives the estimate; Niantic has not published a corresponding fixed percentage.
How to hunt for Ditto efficiently
- Check the current disguise list. Focus on eligible species appearing in your area; the list can change with events.
- Catch eligible non-shiny Pokémon. A disguise is confirmed only after capture, so seeing an eligible Pokémon on the map is not enough.
- Use Incense or a Lure for more chances to check, if useful. These can produce more encounters, but the community guide does not establish that they increase the chance that any one eligible Pokémon is Ditto. Pokémon GO Hub’s guide discusses these hunting tips.
- Check event announcements for explicit changes. A bonus or temporary disguise change applies only within the event’s stated dates and local-time window.
- Coordinate around a confirmed spawn. Niantic says the same disguised Ditto spawn will reveal itself to other Trainers who catch it, so a report from another player can help you find that particular encounter.
Can a shiny Pokémon be a Ditto?
No: if an eligible Pokémon is shiny on the encounter screen, it is not a Ditto disguise. Niantic’s Help Center states, “Ditto will not disguise itself as other Shiny Pokémon, even if Ditto is Shiny.” It also clarifies, “However, a Shiny Ditto may disguise itself as a non-Shiny Pokémon!” In other words, a shiny Ditto can be hidden behind an eligible Pokémon that appears non-shiny. Are shiny Ditto odds known?
Niantic’s consulted Help Center material does not give a numerical shiny Ditto probability. The 2022 Silph Research Group discussion describes a 1-in-64 rate as likely, and community guides repeat that figure, but it remains an estimate rather than an official confirmed rate. The regular Ditto estimate and the shiny estimate should not be multiplied into a definitive overall chance: official sources do not establish that the figures apply to every encounter or that the probabilities combine independently.

Ditto’s disguise pool and encounter chances can be affected by events. For example, Niantic’s September 23–27, 2025 Completely Normal event advertised an increased chance to encounter Ditto, and its March 2026 Pokopia Celebration announcement described costumed Ditto and a temporary disguise change.
