The Kraken is uncommon, but Rare has not published exact odds, a fixed spawn interval, or a per-ship chance. Rare said in May 2025 that Kraken encounters had been “significantly reduced,” so a long stretch without seeing one does not mean it has been removed.
Is the Kraken rare in Sea of Thieves?
In practical terms, yes: crews can go many sessions without an encounter. But there is no reliable public percentage or encounters-per-hour figure to say exactly how rare it is. Rare’s May 1, 2025 Hotfix 3.3.2.1 described the encounter frequency as “significantly reduced” without giving a numerical rate. Read Rare’s Hotfix 3.3.2.1 notes.
Player reports vary, but individual stories of frequent sightings or long gaps do not establish a general rate. There is also no published rate comparison for Kraken encounters versus Megalodons, Skeleton Ships, ship types, or High Seas versus Safer Seas.
Does the Kraken only spawn when there is no World Event?
That was outdated advice after a change in Season 15. Rare’s March 27, 2025 update 3.3.2 said Kraken encounters could occur on a server alongside some other World Events, including Skeleton Forts. At that point, Rare said the change would not alter Kraken encounter frequency; other events could cycle more often. Read Rare’s update 3.3.2 notes.

Rare’s May 1 hotfix retained the ability for Kraken encounters to occur alongside other World Events, while significantly reducing their frequency. These dated notes are the useful distinction: coexistence with some events was allowed in Season 15, and the later hotfix reduced encounter frequency. Older “only between events” explanations should not be treated as the current documented rule.
Why might you go a long time without seeing one?
The clearest official explanation is the reduced encounter frequency in the May 2025 hotfix. A long gap is therefore consistent with Rare’s documented change and is not evidence by itself that the Kraken was removed. Rare has not published a fixed wait time or a guarantee that a crew will see one after spending a certain amount of time at sea.

In a May 2, 2025 official forum maintenance notice, Rare employee j0toro said the Kraken had been “returned to its prior position in World Event rotation” to address high spawn frequency issues. That notice adds context to the change, but does not provide odds. Read the official maintenance notice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can the Kraken attack you in Safer Seas?
Yes. Rare’s Safer Seas FAQ explicitly says the Kraken appears in Safer Seas and will still attack your ship. The FAQ does not say whether its encounter frequency matches High Seas, so the two modes cannot be compared on that basis. Read Rare’s Safer Seas FAQ.

What you can—and can’t—conclude
- You can conclude: Rare reduced Kraken encounter frequency in May 2025, and it remains able to appear alongside some World Events.
- You can’t conclude: an exact chance, a fixed timer, or a reliable per-session rate; Rare has not published those figures.
- You can’t infer: that the Kraken was removed just because you have not encountered it, or that waiting a specific amount of time guarantees an attack.
