Roguelike and roguelite describe games built around repeatable runs, changing challenges, and the possibility of losing a character or attempt. A traditional roguelike follows the design associated with Rogue: randomized maps, permadeath, turn-based combat, grid movement, resource management, and several possible solutions to a situation. A roguelite borrows some of those ideas but usually relaxes the format, often by using real-time action and allowing selected progress to survive a failed run.
Those are useful shorthand descriptions, not universally enforced genre laws. The most reliable way to classify a game is to explain what changes between runs, what death removes, and what the player keeps. Hades and Dead Cells show why a game can use more than one label without being contradictory.

The short version: what separates a roguelike from a roguelite?
The strict historical reference point is the Berlin Interpretation, a set of characteristics associated with the 2008 International Roguelike Development Conference. Its commonly cited traits include randomly generated environments, permanent death, turn-based play, grid-based movement, substantial complexity, non-modal interaction, resource management, and combat that can be approached in multiple ways. The 1980 game Rogue is the namesake and starting point for that tradition.

In everyday modern usage, roguelite usually means a looser adaptation. A roguelite may keep randomized levels and run-based failure while switching to real-time combat, free movement, platforming, shooting, or an action-RPG structure. It commonly lets the player retain unlocks, equipment options, abilities, story progress, or other advantages after death. That persistence is a practical signal, not a mandatory checklist: some games called roguelites carry little permanent power, and some games called roguelikes include progression outside a single run.

| Question | Traditional roguelike tendency | Common roguelite tendency |
|---|---|---|
| How does the world change? | Randomized maps, encounters, items, and enemy situations are central. | Randomized rooms, routes, rewards, or encounters are retained, but the surrounding format is more flexible. |
| How does combat work? | Usually turn-based, with grid movement and time to consider each action. | Often real-time and action-focused, although turn-based roguelites also exist. |
| What does death do? | Normally ends the current character and run; the next attempt starts with a new state. | Ends the current run, while selected unlocks or other progress may remain. |
| What survives? | Often the player’s knowledge and skill, rather than a stronger in-game character. | Frequently includes new weapons, abilities, routes, story, currencies, or upgrades that persist. |
| What is the design emphasis? | Decisions and resource management inside a largely self-contained run. | A combination of run-to-run decisions and a longer progression arc. |
These tendencies describe how the labels are commonly used; they do not determine whether a game is good, difficult, or worth playing.
What the Berlin Interpretation actually contributes
The Berlin Interpretation is best understood as a historical framework rather than a certification system. The Steam overview of the genre lists eight influential characteristics:
- Random environment generation
- Permadeath
- Turn-based play
- Grid-based movement
- Complexity that permits multiple solutions
- Non-modal interaction, so actions follow a consistent interface rather than separate game modes
- Resource management
- Hack-and-slash combat
Games do not need to satisfy every item for players to understand what someone means by “roguelike.” The same overview notes that the narrow definition has been criticized. Developers and storefronts therefore use the term both for close descendants of Rogue and as a broad umbrella for run-based games. A useful description should identify the mechanics instead of treating the interpretation as a legal test.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy turn-based and grid-based play matter
In a traditional roguelike, the world generally advances in discrete turns. You can decide whether to move, attack, use an item, or wait, then observe the result before taking another action. Grid movement makes distance, line of sight, doors, corridors, and positioning explicit. This creates a strategic puzzle in which a single step can change whether an enemy reaches you, whether a resource is spent, or whether an escape route remains.
Real-time games can still use the same ideas, but they change the pressure. Dodging, aiming, timing, and reflexes become part of the run. That is why a fast action game may be called a roguelite even when it has random rooms and permanent death: it borrows the structure without reproducing the original tempo and interface.

Permadeath does not mean that everything is erased
Permadeath means the current character or run ends permanently when its failure condition is met. In a strict example, you cannot reload that character and continue from the same state. You begin another run with a new map, new resources, or a new build.
“Permadeath” and “all progress erased” are different claims. A game can delete the current run while preserving progress outside it. The distinction becomes clearer when you separate four kinds of persistence:
- Run state: health, temporary currency, weapons, bonuses, and route choices collected during the attempt. This is normally lost on death.
- Permanent unlocks: weapons, abilities, characters, levels, mutations, or other options that become available in later attempts.
- Meta-progression: currencies or upgrades spent between runs to improve long-term capabilities. The amount and type vary widely.
- Player knowledge: learning enemy patterns, room layouts, shortcuts, item interactions, and better decision-making. This remains even when the game gives no permanent stat increase.
A game may preserve only new choices rather than raw power. Unlocking another weapon changes what can appear in future runs; it does not necessarily make every future run easier. Conversely, a permanent health or damage upgrade directly changes the starting conditions. Both are persistent progression, but they produce different difficulty curves.
How a run works in practice
1. Starting conditions
A run begins with a controlled starting kit: a character, weapon, class, or small set of abilities. Traditional roguelikes often provide basic equipment and ask you to manage what you find. Roguelites may let permanent systems determine which equipment pools, upgrades, or characters are available before the first room.
2. Randomized decisions
Random generation can affect the map itself, the order of rooms, enemy combinations, item locations, shops, rewards, or the route between areas. Randomness should create changing problems, not make every outcome arbitrary. The player’s decisions still matter: whether to spend a scarce healing item, take a dangerous branch for a better reward, or build around a weapon found during the attempt.

3. Building a temporary run
Most run-based games ask you to assemble a build from temporary choices. A weapon may combine with a status effect; a defensive item may enable a riskier attack; a route may trade safety for currency. These choices are usually reset at death, which makes adaptation more important than following a single perfect plan.

4. Failure and the next attempt
When the character dies or the run otherwise ends, the temporary build disappears. The game then applies its persistence rules: some unlocks, currencies, story events, or access conditions may be recorded, while the immediate inventory and map are discarded. The next attempt is not a continuation of the old run; it is a new run shaped by what the game allowed you to keep.
Hades: an action game with overlapping labels
Supergiant Games describes Hades as a rogue-like dungeon crawler, while also emphasizing that it is very much an action game. Its FAQ explains the terminology directly: “While Hades is very much an action game, rogue-likes traditionally are turn-based, strategic games — so, the term ‘rogue-lite’ is also sometimes used to describe games that take influence from the genre without strictly adhering to the original format.”
That wording illustrates why labels overlap. Hades uses repeatable, changing escape attempts and the threat of losing a run, but its combat is real-time. It also has permanent progression systems, difficulty modifiers, and God Mode. Those systems let the player develop over multiple attempts rather than treating every death as a total return to the original starting conditions.
The game’s story is integrated with the repeated attempts. Returning after a failed escape is part of the narrative structure, not merely a menu reset. Supergiant says it wanted its own take on the style, with a strong sense of place and story. Calling Hades a roguelike reflects its run-based lineage; calling it a roguelite highlights its action format and persistent progression. Neither label, by itself, tells you how much is retained, so the mechanics are the useful information.

Release timeline
Supergiant’s FAQ lists these release milestones: Early Access began on the Epic Games Store on December 6, 2018; Steam Early Access followed on December 10, 2019; version 1.0 launched on September 17, 2020; and Xbox and PlayStation versions launched on August 13, 2021. The FAQ was last updated July 16, 2025. It also confirms physical retail editions for Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation. Platform availability and editions can change, so check the current store listing for the platform you intend to use.
Dead Cells: a clear example of the roguelite shorthand
The developer’s official description calls Dead Cells “a rogue-lite, Castlevania-inspired action-platformer,” with a sprawling, ever-changing castle and the risk of fighting its keepers. It combines real-time side-scrolling combat and exploration with permadeath, nonlinear progression, and new-level unlocks after deaths.
Its Steam description makes the persistence more specific. Across successive runs, players can retain access to new paths and levels, as well as mutations, abilities, and weapons. The current run still ends when the character dies, but the wider selection of routes and tools remains. That is the practical meaning of roguelite progression: the attempt is disposable, while parts of the game state develop over time.
Dead Cells launched on Steam on August 6, 2018. Its official label is useful because it communicates both sides of the design: the run can be lost, yet the campaign is not reduced to repeating an unchanged opening forever.

- Is combat turn-based or real-time? This is often the fastest way to distinguish a traditional roguelike from an action-oriented roguelite.
- What is randomized? Look for maps, rooms, enemy groups, rewards, routes, or item pools, and note whether randomness changes every run or only selected sections.
- What exactly is lost on death? Separate temporary equipment and currency from unlocks, story flags, levels, and account-wide upgrades.
- What exactly survives? “Progression” might mean a new weapon entering the pool, a permanent stat increase, access to a new biome, or only narrative knowledge.
- Can difficulty be adjusted? Some games add modifiers or assist modes that change the challenge without removing the run structure.
- How much depends on player skill? Learning patterns and routes can make later runs easier even when the game grants no permanent bonuses.
Common misconceptions and better wording
“Every roguelike is turn-based.”
Turn-based, grid-based play is central to the strict historical model, but modern usage is broader. Say that traditional roguelikes usually use those systems, then describe the individual game’s combat.
“Every roguelite has permanent stat upgrades.”
Persistent progression can be an unlock, route, weapon pool, story event, or ability rather than a numerical bonus. Confirm what survives instead of promising stronger statistics.
“Permadeath means the player loses everything.”
Usually it means the current run is over. The game may preserve long-term unlocks, and the player always retains knowledge and skill.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →“Random generation means no strategy is possible.”
Well-designed randomness changes the problems while leaving meaningful choices. Resource management, route selection, positioning, and build decisions are the strategy that carries a run.
“Roguelike and roguelite are mutually exclusive categories.”
Developers may use both terms for the same game, as the Hades FAQ demonstrates. Treat the labels as shorthand and explain the actual rules.
A practical way to describe any run-based game
- State the format first: turn-based grid tactics, real-time action, platforming, shooting, or another structure.
- Describe the run loop: how a run starts, what changes during it, and what event ends it.
- List the randomized elements: maps, rooms, enemies, rewards, routes, or item pools.
- Separate temporary run state from permanent progression in two distinct sentences.
- Explain the role of player learning, since knowledge can persist even when the game’s character does not.
- Use “roguelike,” “roguelite,” or both only after those mechanics are clear.
This method avoids a checklist argument and gives a prospective player the information needed to judge difficulty, replayability, and the consequences of failure.
Bottom line
A traditional roguelike is the closer descendant of Rogue: randomized environments, permadeath, turn-based grid movement, resource pressure, and complex choices inside each self-contained run. A roguelite keeps selected pieces of that formula while loosening the format, commonly through real-time action and progression that survives death. The labels overlap because games combine these ingredients in different proportions. When deciding what a game is, ask what changes between runs, what death resets, and what the game lets you carry forward.
