RTMP carries a live feed from an encoder to a streaming service’s ingest endpoint; a CDN usually helps deliver the processed, packaged video to viewers. Between those ends, the service may transcode the feed into multiple qualities and package it as HLS or DASH. RTMP ingest and CDN playback are different parts of the delivery chain.
The live-video path, from camera to viewer
A typical workflow looks like this:
Camera and audio → encoder → RTMP/RTMPS ingest → processing and transcoding → packaging and origin → CDN edge delivery → viewer player
This is a representative architecture, not a requirement that every provider expose each stage as a separate service. A managed platform can hide much of the pipeline; a component-based cloud design may assign each stage to a different service. Cloudflare Stream describes an end-to-end service, while AWS’s live-streaming architecture names distinct processing, packaging, and CDN components.
What happens at each stage?
1. Capture and encode
A camera and microphone create the source audio and video. Encoder software or hardware prepares that media for contribution to a platform. The encoder is not necessarily a physical appliance: Cloudflare’s setup guide recommends streaming software such as OBS. Its guide explains how to connect software to a live input.

2. Send the feed to ingest
The encoder connects to a provider’s ingest endpoint and authenticates with a stream key. RTMP is a common contribution protocol for this link. RTMPS is RTMP carried over SSL/TLS, protecting the encoder-to-ingest connection. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance specifies its RTMPS endpoint, port 443, and SNI for server authentication.
A stream key identifies the live input or broadcast destination; it is a credential, so do not publish it or expose it in a recording. YouTube’s API describes primary and backup ingest addresses and stream-name/key fields. Whether and how a backup endpoint is used depends on the provider and the encoder’s configuration. YouTube Live Streams API documentation covers the ingest addresses and stream fields.
3. Process and transcode
The service receives the contribution feed and may process it or create multiple resolutions and bitrates. Transcoding can give viewers a choice of quality, including an adaptive stream that changes rendition as their connection changes. The CDN does not necessarily do this work: AWS’s example assigns live processing to MediaLive, separately from MediaPackage and CloudFront. Cloudflare says Stream encodes live video at multiple resolutions. Cloudflare’s overview and AWS’s architecture overview describe these differing service boundaries.

4. Package media for playback
Processing output is arranged into playback resources, commonly a manifest plus a sequence of media segments. The manifest tells a compatible player what streams are available and where to request the segments. An origin provides those resources to the delivery layer. In AWS’s example, MediaPackage acts as the origin and just-in-time packager, with HLS, DASH, and CMAF outputs listed for playback devices. These are example outputs, not a claim that every provider supports all of them.

A CDN distributes viewer-facing resources through a network of edge locations. Rather than every viewer fetching every segment directly from the same origin, the CDN can serve content from an edge closer to the viewer. The CDN’s role is distribution; it does not remove the need for ingest, processing or packaging, and a compatible player. Cloudflare describes delivery through its Global Network; AWS places CloudFront after MediaPackage.
6. Let the player request and adapt
The viewer’s player reads the playback manifest and requests media segments. With adaptive-bitrate delivery, a player can select among available renditions in response to changing network conditions. Cloudflare documents HLS and DASH playback with quality adaptation to viewer bandwidth. See its Stream overview.

Why RTMP ingest is not the same as CDN delivery
RTMP or RTMPS typically describes how the broadcaster contributes a feed to an ingest service. Viewers generally receive playback resources such as HLS or DASH through a player and delivery network. The protocols serve different links in the chain: an RTMP ingest URL is not, by itself, the viewer playback URL or a CDN.
RTMPS encryption protects the encoder-to-ingest connection described by YouTube’s guidance; it should not be taken as a guarantee about security, encryption, or access control for the entire viewer path. Those depend on the downstream platform and its configuration.

Latency: what the protocol labels do and do not tell you
YouTube’s protocol comparison says RTMP and RTMPS support normal, low, or ultra-low latency, while segment-based HLS and DASH ingest generally have greater latency. These are comparative descriptions of YouTube’s workflows, not universal end-to-end timing guarantees. Actual latency depends on the complete workflow and its settings. YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison provides its protocol-specific guidance.

YouTube’s HLS ingest instructions recommend segment durations of one to four seconds and cap them at five seconds for that particular workflow. That is not a general rule for HLS playback or every HLS implementation. The HLS ingestion guide gives the workflow-specific segment guidance.
How to compare streaming architectures
When evaluating a platform or designing a pipeline, check the whole path rather than choosing on the basis of “RTMP” or “CDN” alone.
- Latency target: distinguish the ingest protocol’s capabilities from end-to-end latency measured for the selected workflow. The cited YouTube comparison gives qualitative categories, not a universal number.
- Codec and quality requirements: YouTube’s comparison associates HLS and DASH ingest with additional codec choices and high-resolution use cases; support depends on the platform. Confirm the actual supported codecs and resolutions for the service you plan to use.
- Operational responsibility: decide whether a managed service that abstracts ingest through delivery fits better than assembling separate processing, packaging, and CDN components.
- Resilience: check for primary and backup ingest endpoints, and establish how failover is configured. Having a backup address documented does not by itself prove that your encoder will fail over automatically.
- Playback compatibility: verify that the target player supports the chosen output format and that adaptive renditions are available if viewers’ bandwidth varies.
Two documented ways to structure the pipeline
Managed workflow: Cloudflare Stream
Cloudflare describes Stream as handling live video from ingest through delivery. Its documented workflow creates a live input with a stream key; a broadcaster sends RTMPS or SRT; Stream encodes multiple resolutions and delivers through Cloudflare’s network. Playback can use Cloudflare’s player or another player that supports HLS or DASH. Its setup guide recommends OBS and explains where to copy the RTMPS URL and key. These are Cloudflare-specific capabilities, not requirements for every streaming platform.

Component-based example: AWS
AWS’s reference architecture assigns live processing to MediaLive, origination and just-in-time packaging to MediaPackage, and CDN delivery to CloudFront. The documented outputs include HLS, DASH, and CMAF. This makes the separate responsibilities visible, but it is one example architecture—not the only way to build a live-video service.
Common misunderstandings
- “The CDN takes an RTMP feed and broadcasts it directly.” Not necessarily. In the documented AWS example, separate processing and packaging components sit between ingest and CloudFront delivery; a managed service may bundle or conceal those roles.
- “RTMPS encrypts the whole broadcast.” The cited guidance establishes protection for the encoder-to-ingest connection, not one universal viewer-side security policy.
- “HLS segment settings are the same everywhere.” YouTube’s one-to-four-second recommendation and five-second cap apply to its specified HLS ingest workflow, not all HLS playback.
- “Low-latency labels promise a fixed delay.” The cited documentation provides workflow comparisons, not an independently measured universal end-to-end latency or performance guarantee.
