RTMP is a protocol that carries timed audio, video, and data messages from an encoder to a streaming service. RTMPS is RTMP protected by TLS/SSL encryption. For YouTube Live, RTMPS is the practical encrypted choice when you want RTMP’s latency options: get the RTMPS server URL and stream key in Live Control Room, then enter them in an encoder that supports RTMPS.

What is RTMP streaming?

RTMP (Real-Time Messaging Protocol) is a transport protocol used to send a live media stream from a sender—typically an encoder—to a receiving service, or ingest server. Adobe’s protocol memo describes it as a bidirectional message-multiplexing service over a reliable stream transport such as TCP, intended to carry parallel video, audio, and data messages with timing information. RTMP is not an encoder: it does not capture or encode your video, and it does not by itself dictate the media codec.

That distinction matters in a live workflow. A camera or game capture provides media; encoder software or hardware encodes and sends it; RTMP or RTMPS carries the resulting messages to the platform; the platform then processes and distributes the stream to viewers.

How RTMP carries a live stream

RTMP divides messages into chunks, interleaves chunks from different message streams over a connection, and gives the receiver information such as timestamps and payload type so it can reassemble the messages. Timestamps are measured in milliseconds relative to an epoch agreed between the communicating endpoints. The protocol’s outline includes a handshake, chunk streams, message formats, control messages, and commands for establishing a session and publishing or playing a stream.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. The encoder connects to the platform’s ingest server and establishes an RTMP session.
  2. The sender publishes timestamped audio and video messages, which may be interleaved with other data.
  3. The service receives and reassembles the messages, then processes the media for its streaming workflow.

RTMP handles message transport and timing; codec support, encoding settings, and the platform’s ingest requirements are separate decisions. A platform may accept a particular protocol but still require a specific codec or encoder configuration.

What is the difference between RTMP and RTMPS?

RTMPS is RTMP carried over a TLS/SSL connection. YouTube describes it as a secure extension to RTMP; its help guidance says the encrypted connection protects the stream in transit. The media workflow remains recognizable, but the transport connection is encrypted.

Protocol Encryption in transit Practical meaning for YouTube Live
RTMP No Unencrypted ingest option; YouTube lists H.264 and suitability for normal, low, or ultra-low latency.
RTMPS Yes, with TLS/SSL Encrypted RTMP ingest; YouTube lists H.264 and the same latency categories as RTMP.

These descriptions apply to YouTube’s documented ingest options, not every platform. Check the destination’s current documentation for supported protocols, codecs, and latency modes.

How do I get my RTMP stream URL and stream key for YouTube?

YouTube’s RTMPS setup requires an encoder that supports RTMPS and the matching RTMPS server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Menu names may change, so follow YouTube’s current Encrypt your stream using RTMPS guidance for the latest interface.

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and locate the stream’s connection details.
  2. Choose or display the RTMPS server URL. Verify that the address begins with rtmps; the default display may show an ordinary RTMP URL.
  3. Copy the stream key from Live Control Room into the corresponding stream-key field in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a public example.
  4. Confirm the encoder is configured for YouTube and supports RTMPS, then connect and start sending the stream.

If you use a different platform, obtain that service’s own server URL and key; YouTube’s URL and settings are not interchangeable with another destination’s.

RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, or DASH: which should you choose on YouTube?

YouTube’s Live Streaming Ingestion Protocol Comparison, last updated June 1, 2026 (UTC), distinguishes the options by encryption, codec support, and latency. It identifies RTMP and RTMPS as H.264 options for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. HLS and DASH are encrypted, support additional codecs, and are positioned for workflows where those codecs or higher-resolution capabilities matter more than ultra-low latency.

YouTube ingest protocol Encrypted Video codecs shown by YouTube Use and trade-off described by YouTube
RTMP No H.264 Listed for normal, low, or ultra-low latency.
RTMPS Yes H.264 Same listed latency suitability as RTMP, with encrypted transport.
HLS Yes H.264, H.265/HEVC Supports HDR and HEVC and may suit 4K workflows; not ultra-low latency.
DASH Yes H.264, VP9 Supports VP9 and may suit 4K workflows; not ultra-low latency.

YouTube says HLS and DASH can provide better compression than H.264, which can mean higher quality at a given bitrate or similar quality at a lower bitrate. It also says these segment-based HTTP protocols generally have greater latency than RTMP. These are YouTube’s platform-specific descriptions, not universal guarantees or measured latency figures. RTMPS is a sensible choice when you want encrypted ingest within YouTube’s RTMP latency categories. Consider HLS or DASH when their codec support or workflow is important and their higher latency is acceptable.

Troubleshooting a YouTube RTMPS connection

  • SSL connection error: Check that the server URL uses rtmps and is the correct URL from Live Control Room. If the error persists, YouTube recommends trying port 443.
  • Connection times out: Verify the server URL and confirm that your encoder supports RTMPS.
  • Encoder connects but the stream does not appear as expected: Recheck that the stream key belongs to the intended stream and review YouTube’s current ingest and encoder guidance. Do not expose the key while troubleshooting.
  • Unsure which codec or latency mode to use: Match the encoder configuration to YouTube’s current protocol comparison and your intended viewing experience; protocol selection alone does not set every encoding parameter.

Copyright and YouTube Live rules still apply

RTMP and RTMPS are delivery methods, not permission to rebroadcast content. Before streaming, make sure you have the rights needed for the video, music, game footage, and other material in your broadcast, and follow YouTube’s applicable live-streaming and monetization policies. A technically valid connection does not prevent a copyright claim, removal, or other policy action.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a prerecorded video or playlist live on YouTube around the clock, RTMP is only the transport piece; your own computer would otherwise need to keep encoding and sending. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos to a YouTube channel, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, with monthly service at $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
