Shopping around can save money on a game, but only if you compare the same game, edition, platform and condition—and judge the full cost rather than the sticker price. Check the offer’s terms, too: shipping, taxes, returns and seller policies can change which deal is actually better.
Start by identifying the exact game you want
Before comparing prices, write down the title, edition, platform and included content. A standard edition is not the same purchase as a deluxe edition with extra content, and a listing for one console or PC platform may not work on another. Check whether the offer is for a physical or digital copy; for used physical games, confirm the stated condition and what is included.
This is the foundation of a fair comparison: consumer guidance from the Federal Trade Commission recommends checking identifying product details and comparing the full terms, not just the advertised amount.
Compare sellers—and treat comparison tools as a starting point
Check more than one reputable retailer for the exact version you want. A shopping-comparison site or price alert can make it easier to spot sellers and changes in price, but neither guarantees that you are seeing every offer or an impartial ranking. The FTC cautions that comparison services differ: some may promote their own products or rank sellers based on payments. Follow a result through to the seller’s listing and verify the details yourself.

If you use a price alert, confirm that it tracks the right platform and edition. A notification that a price has fallen is useful context, not proof that the current offer is the best available or a good value.
Compare the checkout total, not the headline price
A lower listed price can become the more expensive option once delivery and other charges are added. Compare what you would actually pay at checkout, including shipping, handling, taxes and any other fees that apply to your order. Also check whether the advertised deal has conditions, such as a membership requirement or a particular delivery option.

- For physical games: include shipping and handling, and check whether the item is new or used and whether the listing includes the expected box, disc or cartridge.
- For digital games: confirm the platform, account or region restrictions shown by the seller, and any conditions attached to redemption.
- For either format: read the return and refund terms before you buy, especially if the listing is discounted or sold by a third party.
Check price matching and price-drop policies
Before choosing a seller, look for a current policy on matching a competitor’s price. If you have already bought the game, check whether the retailer offers a credit or refund when its price drops soon afterward. These policies vary by seller and may have eligibility windows, exclusions or proof requirements, so confirm the terms directly rather than assuming a price adjustment is available.
Question big discounts and countdowns
A crossed-out price or countdown timer is not enough to establish that a game is a bargain. Look for a clear explanation of the reference price and compare the offer with other sellers’ current prices. The European Commission’s March 26, 2026 report on a coordinated sweep of 314 online traders in 23 EU countries, Iceland and Norway found that 30% referenced discounts incorrectly. Of traders displaying price comparisons, 60% did not clearly explain the source of their reference prices. These figures describe a broad online-trader sample, not game retailers alone, and do not indicate the likelihood that any individual game offer is misleading.

EU rules also have a specific reference-price requirement: when traders announce a price reduction, the European Commission’s sweep overview describes a requirement to use the lowest price applied during the preceding 30 days. That is a jurisdiction-specific rule, not a universal standard; shoppers elsewhere should check the consumer-protection rules that apply where they live. Whatever the location, do not let a sale label or limited-time message rush a decision.
For online and mobile games, look beyond the purchase price
A game’s headline price may not capture what it costs to access the features you want. Before committing, check whether play or particular features require a subscription, whether the advertised description matches the included features, and whether there are additional costs. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s guidance on online and mobile games also advises consumers to examine limited-time sales claims and other potentially misleading representations.

Use a simple decision rule
Choose the offer that gives you the exact game and edition you want at the best acceptable total cost, from a seller whose terms you understand. If the price only looks compelling because of a countdown, a vague crossed-out figure or an unclear listing, pause and verify it before paying.
