Spend Diamonds in Hades on the purchase that serves your next goal: Contractor work orders for recurring run benefits, contracts when you want to advance a character’s story, or fishing and music unlocks for completion and convenience. There is no universal best order because these options compete for the same currency and unlock at different points.
What Diamonds are for
Diamonds are a resource used with the House Contractor and Wretched Broker. Supergiant’s October 8, 2019 update notes introduced them for those uses and said that clearing a boss for the first time with each weapon could award a Bounty such as a Diamond or Chthonic Key. The developer’s December 3, 2019 update notes later described Contractor upgrades that affect resource pickups and said Bounties became specific to clearing each Underworld region rather than random.

Those notes explain the system’s core purpose, but they are historical. Work-order prices, effects, and prerequisites below come from a third-party guide and may be affected by game updates; check the Contractor’s live catalog for what is currently available in your game.

For run benefits, unlock the Contractor’s Desk first
The Contractor’s Desk, Deluxe costs 2 Diamonds in the guide and is a prerequisite for several additional work orders. If you want practical benefits, it is a gateway purchase rather than a direct bonus to a run. After it becomes available, choose among the listed orders by the resource you value most:
- Pitch-Black Darkness (3 Diamonds): choose this if its listed Darkness-related benefit fits your priorities.
- Fated Keys (3 Diamonds): consider it if you value the listed benefit connected to Fated Authority or Fated Persuasion.
- Brilliant Gemstones (3 Diamonds): choose it if bonus Gemstones are more useful to you.
- Vintage Nectar (3 Diamonds): consider it if Nectar is the resource you want more of.
- Darker Thirst (2 Diamonds): choose it if the listed Obol-related benefit suits how you approach runs.
- Vanquisher’s Keep (4 Diamonds): consider it if you want the listed bonus Gemstones from boss defeats.
These effects are not interchangeable, and the cost list does not establish a mathematically optimal order. Buy the work order that matches the resource you currently want; if none does, keep the Diamonds for a story or feature unlock instead.

For character stories, buy the contract you want to advance
Sentence contracts provide discrete story progression, and their prerequisites mean they may not appear immediately. The listed choices are:
- Court Musician’s Sentence — 1 Diamond: frees Orpheus.
- Knave-King’s Sentence — 4 Diamonds: frees Sisyphus.
- Singer’s Gamble — 3 Diamonds: permits Orpheus to reunite with Eurydice.
- Hero’s Sacrifice — 5 Diamonds: allows Achilles to return to Elysium.
If a particular character’s arc matters more to you than another run upgrade, saving for that contract is a reasonable choice. The listed costs and effects describe distinct outcomes, not a required sequence to buy them all.

For completion or convenience, consider the smaller unlocks
- Rod of Fishing — 1 Diamond: unlocks fishing, but the guide lists several unlock conditions, so the purchase may not be immediately available.
- Court Music Stand — 1 Diamond: authorizes playback of music pieces.
- Administrative Privilege — 2 Diamonds: a quality-of-life option that requires story progression.
These can be good uses of Diamonds when fishing, music, or the associated feature is a personal priority. If you are focused on run resources or a specific character contract, they can wait.
Leave décor and extra music to personal preference
The Contractor also offers House cosmetics, while music purchases can add pieces to the Music Stand. Supergiant’s update notes describe these as unlocks through the Contractor and Music Stand; the detailed catalog and additional possible Diamond uses are documented by the Hades Wiki’s House Contractor page, a community source. Treat décor and optional songs as preference-led spending, not necessary progression purchases.
