In an unmodded Skyrim: Hearthfire household, Lakeview Manor can have up to six named NPCs in its family and assigned household roles: a spouse, two adopted children, a steward, a bard, and a housecarl. That count assumes the steward and housecarl are different characters. A hired carriage driver is an additional service NPC, not an indoor resident.
Who can live at Lakeview Manor?
The six-person count combines family members with assigned household characters. It is a practical roster, not a single official occupancy limit covering every possible character or creature.

| Category | Who counts | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Family | One spouse and up to two adopted children | Children need an appropriate bed and storage arrangement. Prima Games’ Hearthfire guide describes moving a spouse into a home and the child furnishings required. |
| Assigned household roles | One steward, one bard, and one housecarl | Count the steward and housecarl separately only if they are different characters. If the housecarl becomes steward, count that character once. |
| Hired service | One carriage driver | The driver is associated with the manor’s services, but should not be counted as an indoor resident. |
| Player | One player character | Add the player only if you mean everyone associated with the home, rather than NPCs. |
How to count the total you mean
- NPCs in the family and assigned household roles: up to six, provided the steward and housecarl are different characters.
- Include the carriage driver: add one service NPC, for up to seven named NPCs associated with the manor. This is not a count of indoor residents.
- Include your character: add one to whichever NPC count you are using.
What can change the count?
Sleeping arrangements depend on the manor’s furnishings, including the beds and storage set up for children. A housecarl who is assigned as steward does not create a second character or household slot.
The count above is for an ordinary, unmodded Hearthfire household. It does not establish a universal maximum for pets, livestock, followers, or modded setups; those can depend on the game configuration. The available guides list the roles and household arrangements, but do not document one official Bethesda capacity figure covering all of these categories.
