Sony redesigned PS5 packaging to use less plastic and more fibre-based materials. At the console’s 2020 launch, Sony reported that packaging for PS5 consoles and accessories was 93–99% fibre-based by weight; newer figures vary by model and region. The changes include replacing plastic trays and cable ties, and removing some plastic bags and display windows.
What changed in PS5 packaging?
Sony’s stated aim was to reduce packaging material and plastic while keeping products protected. The redesign changed several components rather than eliminating all plastic.
- Cushioning and inserts: Card inserts and paper-pulp cushion trays replaced expanded polystyrene and plastic trays.
- Cable ties: Paper ties replaced plastic ties.
- Protection bags: Sony removed plastic bags for cables and instruction manuals where feasible.
- Accessory boxes: Closed card boxes replaced plastic display windows.
- Hanger tabs: Folding tabs replaced glued hanger tabs.
- Console handle: Sony says the latest slim PS5 model no longer has the plastic carrying handle used on the earlier design.
Sony describes these as packaging-design changes intended to preserve protection while reducing plastic. The company has not established in the cited reporting that every component or package is plastic-free.
How much of the packaging is fibre-based?
The reported percentages refer to weight, not the share of package components or volume. Sony’s figures also differ by product, model, date and region.

The percentages are company-reported figures; they are not an independent assessment of the packaging’s overall environmental impact. Sony also reported that PS5 packaging was 93–99% plastic-free by weight in 2021, depending on product. That is a different measure from the fibre-based percentages and should not be treated as a separate estimate of recyclability. Sony Interactive Entertainment
Is PS5 packaging recyclable?
Sony says the materials used for PS5 console and accessory packaging are designed to be recyclable. That does not guarantee that every item can be recycled through every local collection system: Sony notes that recycling depends on suitable local facilities. Check the packaging labels and your municipality’s rules, and separate materials if local guidance asks you to.

What is new in Sony’s latest packaging update?
In an August 2026 update covering FY2025, Sony Interactive Entertainment said current packaging across its products is typically 95–100% fibre-based, depending on product and region. It also said cotton-based alternatives to some MIRAMAT protective bags began in FY2025. This is a broader current SIE packaging statement, not a new percentage specific to every PS5 box.

The figures describe material composition by weight and document particular design changes. They do not, by themselves, quantify the net environmental effect of making, transporting or disposing of the packaging. Sony’s cited reporting does not provide an independent lifecycle assessment for PS5 packaging.
