Assassin’s Creed Shadows makes stealth a series of moment-to-moment choices: find out where enemies are, manage light and noise, choose how to move, and decide whether your Hidden Blade can finish the target. Ubisoft’s design overview describes a system built around Observe and Naoe’s Eagle Vision rather than a companion eagle that surveys and maps an entire location.
How do Observe and Eagle Vision differ?
Both Naoe and Yasuke can use Observe to identify targets, tag and monitor enemies, and highlight lootable stashes, collectibles, and quest objectives. From a Synch Point, it can also help examine nearby locations more closely.
Naoe’s Eagle Vision has a narrower stealth role: it reveals enemies behind walls or other objects and brings relevant sounds to her attention. Ubisoft says the abilities work independently, but they can also be combined—for example, to tag an enemy revealed through a wall. In Ubisoft’s description, Eagle Vision rewards slowing down to inspect enemies, useful objects, and hiding places rather than surveying everything at once.
How do light, posture, and movement affect stealth?
Use darkness as cover
Ubisoft says that, for the first time in the series, shadows at night can make the player invisible to enemies. These hiding spots can appear indoors or outdoors, and Naoe can create some by breaking lanterns with a shuriken. Darkness gives her an advantage, particularly at higher difficulty settings, but Ubisoft describes her as capable in daylight too.

Choose a quieter pace
Crouching reduces visibility and footstep noise. Standing and sprinting increase the chance of being seen or heard; sprinting through populated areas is especially risky. Noise matters indoors as well: crouching helps Naoe move more carefully over creaking Nightingale Floors and around other noisy objects.
Go prone to use low cover
Both protagonists can lie prone on the ground, on rooftops, and underwater. Naoe can roll in different directions while prone and crawl through some openings beneath buildings. Her small profile also lets her squeeze through narrow cracks in walls and hide in compact storage spaces or boxes.

What stealth tools and takedowns are available?
Naoe’s kit includes smoke bombs, shuriken, and other classic tools. Shuriken can briefly stun an enemy or distract them by affecting the environment; smoke bombs can help create an escape opportunity. Against low-rank enemies, smoke can also set up an assassination while Naoe remains unseen.
When undetected, the player can manually grab an enemy and drag them away for an assassination or a non-lethal takedown. Ubisoft says this approach removes some of the series’ previous automation. Double assassinations are also possible, but require the Tanto and its dedicated skill: they can be performed against two adjacent enemies on the ground or from the air.

How do Naoe and Yasuke approach stealth differently?
| Aspect | Naoe | Yasuke |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Agile shinobi focused on stealth and infiltration, according to Ubisoft. | More combat-oriented, according to Ubisoft. |
| Information tools | Observe and Eagle Vision; Eagle Vision reveals enemies through obstacles and relevant sounds. | Observe; Ubisoft’s overview does not assign him Naoe’s Eagle Vision. |
| Shared stealth options | Can use Observe, go prone, and take advantage of stealth systems. | Can use Observe and go prone, including on rooftops and underwater. |
| Distinct movement detail | Can roll while prone and crawl through some openings. | Those Naoe-specific prone movement options are not stated for Yasuke in Ubisoft’s overview. |
The distinction is not simply “stealth for Naoe, no stealth for Yasuke”: both have Observe and prone movement. Ubisoft presents Naoe as the character with the more specialized infiltration abilities, while Yasuke’s emphasis is combat.

An assassination attempt is not guaranteed to kill every target. Ubisoft says the starting Hidden Blade removes two health segments. The target indicator communicates the likely result: white means a guaranteed kill, yellow means partial damage, and red means the attempt is denied. A stronger enemy can survive or completely block an attempt if the blade’s damage is too low for that target.
Players can increase assassination damage through Mastery Tree upgrades, equipment, and gear engravings. Ubisoft also describes contextual bonuses, including for air assassinations and nighttime attempts. An optional one-shot assassination feature allows kills regardless of the target’s health bar, bypassing the usual health-based limit.
Ubisoft’s progression overview also says enemies five or more levels above the player are marked with a skull icon. That is a game-level warning, not a separate assassination rule: the indicator and target health determine whether an attempt kills, damages, or is denied.
How do enemies respond when stealth breaks?
Guards can hear footsteps and react to environmental disturbances, so a distraction or noisy approach can draw attention even if the player is out of sight. Servants cannot fight, but they can alert guards and raise alarms. Alerted samurai are harder to fool or lure than ordinary opponents, and smoke bombs can help disperse them during an escape.
These mechanics are Ubisoft’s description of the intended game systems, not an independent assessment of their performance. Ubisoft’s overview does not establish how later updates may have changed particular mechanics.
