Steam’s concurrent-user figure is a platform-wide snapshot, not a count of everyone who played during the last 48 hours. Valve displays a current reading and a peak for its “most recent 48 hours” view; its game list separately shows each title’s current players and peak today. The exact sampling cadence and full inclusion rules for the platform-wide figure are not specified in the official sources cited here.
What Steam’s concurrent-user number measures
“Concurrent” means how many users are counted at once, rather than how many distinct people used Steam over an extended period. Valve’s public Steam & Game Stats page labels its platform-wide section “Concurrent Steam Users (most recent 48 hours)” and shows separate current and peak readings. The 48-hour wording describes the displayed view and its peak window; it does not make the current figure a total of unique users across those 48 hours.

The page also lists games under “Top games by current player count,” with separate “Current Players” and “Peak Today” columns. These are game-level figures, not the platform-wide total. The labels should travel with any number you quote: scope, whether it is current or a peak, and the relevant period all matter.

Platform total versus a game’s player count
| Figure | Scope | Time label | Where Valve displays or documents it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Concurrent Steam users | Platform-wide | Current reading and peak for the most recent 48 hours | Steam & Game Stats public page |
| Current players | One game | Current | “Top games by current player count” on the public page |
| Peak Today | One game | Today’s peak | “Top games by current player count” on the public page |
| Current players in a specified app | One app on Steam | Currently active | Steamworks Web API endpoint documentation |
A platform-wide current count and a game’s daily peak answer different questions. A game’s “Peak Today” is not its current player count, and neither figure is the platform-wide concurrent total.

What Valve documents about per-game API counts
Steamworks Web API
Valve describes ISteamUserStats/GetNumberOfCurrentPlayers as returning the total number of players currently active in the specified app on Steam. Its documentation explicitly says the endpoint does not return players who are playing while not connected to Steam. That caveat applies to this per-app Web API endpoint; it should not be silently applied to every number shown on Steam’s public stats page.
Steamworks client API
Valve’s Steamworks client API describes ISteamUserStats::GetNumberOfCurrentPlayers as asynchronously retrieving the players currently playing the current game, “Both online and in offline mode.” This is a different API context from the Web API. The two descriptions do not establish that their results—or either result and the public platform-wide counter—are interchangeable.

What the public figure does not tell you
Valve’s public stats page and the cited API documentation do not specify the platform-wide counter’s exact sampling interval or complete inclusion rules. They do not establish how multiple devices or sessions are treated, or precisely which client and session states contribute to the platform-wide figure. Avoid presenting those details as known facts.

It is a concurrent reading or a peak, not a unique-user period total.

In a Steam & Game Stats page snapshot identified as updated October 12, 2026, Valve displayed 26,273,321 current concurrent Steam users and a peak of 43,501,449 for the most recent 48 hours. Those are volatile page readings from that date, not enduring benchmarks or annual totals.
