A reservation-queue email means Valve is holding a unit for you and will later send a purchase invitation. You then have 72 hours to pay. A waitlist email means your randomized position was behind the units initially available; you only get a purchase opportunity if cancellations move you forward or when Valve offers a later production run. The September 17, 2026 signup randomization has already passed, so do not assume the original signup window is still open.
Reservation, waitlist and purchase: the three statuses
Steam Frame uses a staged allocation system rather than treating every signup as an immediate preorder. The status in your email determines whether a device is currently being held for you, whether you are waiting behind the initial allocation, or whether you have actually completed a purchase.

Valve exhausts the reservation queue for a particular list before sending purchase emails to that list’s waitlist. If someone in another country appears to receive an invitation sooner, that does not necessarily indicate that your position changed; the lists are separated by shipping region and storage model.
Who could sign up for Steam Frame?
Valve’s stated eligibility rules required all of the following:

- At least one Steam purchase made before April 27, 2026.
- One signup per household.
Valve said it would use the payment method, shipping address and other information to identify and remove multiple entries. Creating additional accounts or entering from multiple household members was therefore not a reliable way to obtain extra positions and could jeopardize eligibility.
These rules describe the signup program. They do not establish that new signups are currently being accepted. Because the one-time randomization date has passed, check the live Steam Frame page for any replacement signup, waitlist or direct-sale process before taking action.
How the original signup and randomization worked
Choose a storage model
At signup, applicants selected either the 256GB or 1TB Steam Frame. Valve maintained a separate list for each capacity.

The FAQ does not establish a price difference, a performance difference or better queue odds for either model. Do not infer that the larger drive is faster to obtain, or that choosing one capacity improves your chance of an invitation.
Automatic regional placement
Steam placed each applicant into the list matching the shipping region. The FAQ identifies separate lists for North America, the United Kingdom and European Union, and Australia. Your shipping destination, rather than a manually selected country preference, determines the applicable list.

The one-time randomization
Each model list was randomized on September 17, 2026, at 10 a.m. Pacific. Valve’s stated reason was to avoid a launch in which bots, faster internet connections, rapid refreshes and people able to schedule their day around a precise release moment gained the advantage. After randomization, signups made later were placed at the back of the waitlist instead of being inserted into the randomized reservation group.
Once randomization occurred and Steam sent a status email, the selected capacity could not be changed. A person who selected 256GB could not switch to 1TB to seek a different queue, and vice versa.
What a reservation-queue email means
A reservation email means Valve says it has reserved a Steam Frame for you, but it is not a receipt and does not show that money has been charged. Valve will send a later email containing the option to purchase. The reservation remains conditional until you complete that checkout.
The 72-hour purchase deadline
When the purchase invitation arrives, the clock is 72 hours. Complete the order within that window using the instructions in the invitation. If you do not finish payment before the deadline, Valve says it cancels the reservation and moves on to the next person in line.
That policy makes the invitation time-sensitive even if you signed up months earlier. Check the Steam account email address you used, inspect spam and filtered folders, and avoid waiting for a second reminder. If the deadline expires, the original reservation is no longer evidence that a unit remains available to you.

Reservation versus preorder
In ordinary retail language, a preorder normally creates an order for a product and may include a charge, authorization or binding order record. Valve’s reservation message describes an allocated opportunity to buy later. Until checkout is completed and an order confirmation is issued, treat the Steam Frame as unpurchased.
What a waitlist email means
A waitlist email means your randomized position was beyond the number of Steam Frames then available to reserve in your model-and-region list. It is not a rejection, but it is not a held device either.
How a waitlist position can improve
If reservation holders cancel, or if their 72-hour purchase windows expire, Valve may move waitlisted customers into the reservation queue and notify them. The FAQ also says future production runs will be offered in waitlist order when the existing reservation queue has been exhausted.
Movement is therefore conditional. A waitlist position does not guarantee a particular invitation date, quantity or shipment date. The FAQ supplies no probability statistic or named population count from which to calculate your odds.
Why another customer may appear to be ahead
Steam processes each model and shipping region separately. An earlier purchase email reported by someone in another region may belong to a different list, not to an applicant who was behind you on your list. Compare updates only with people in the same capacity and shipping region.

What happens if you cancel or change your mind?
- Canceling a reservation: Valve says the reservation is released and the system moves on to the next person.
- Leaving the waitlist: Your spot is released. You should not expect to reclaim the same position later.
- Changing capacity: After randomization and the status email, Valve says you cannot switch between 256GB and 1TB.
These actions are different from declining a marketing email. If you want to preserve your opportunity, use the account or order controls Valve specifies rather than assuming that ignoring messages leaves your place untouched.
Regional ordering exceptions
North America, the United Kingdom, European Union and Australia
The FAQ describes separate Steam lists for these shipping areas. Your queue status applies only to the region assigned to your shipping destination and to the capacity you selected.
Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong
Valve directs customers in Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong to its official distributor, Komodo, for ordering information. The Steam reservation process described for the other regional lists should not be assumed to apply identically there.
South Korea
Valve says Steam Frame will ship in South Korea at a later date, but the FAQ does not provide that date. Do not treat the statement as a current order opening or as a promised delivery schedule.
What the FAQ does not establish
Queue systems invite speculation, but several commonly repeated claims are not supported by Valve’s stated information:

- A current number of units available or remaining.
- Your personal queue position or an estimated invitation date.
- A final shipping date for the headset.
- Different reservation odds for 256GB versus 1TB.
- Current Amazon listing, stock, price or retailer availability.
- A guarantee that a waitlisted applicant will receive a unit from a specific production run.
Availability, queue movement, shipping geography and accessory terms can change. Verify the live official Steam information and your account-specific email before describing Steam Frame as available to buy.
Accessories and the checkout context
Valve’s FAQ says its first-party power supply, Accessories Replacement Kit and Ergonomic Accessories Kit are available only to customers purchasing Steam Frame through the add-to-cart process. That is a purchase-context condition, not evidence that these items can be ordered independently or that they are stocked by a particular retailer.
The official information supports calling the hardware a Steam Frame VR headset and identifies the 256GB and 1TB configurations. It does not verify an Amazon listing, Amazon inventory, a price, or any affiliate arrangement.

Practical checklist for each status
If your email says reservation queue
- Confirm that the message is associated with the Steam account and shipping region you used to sign up.
- Watch for the separate purchase invitation; the reservation message itself is not an order confirmation.
- When the invitation arrives, complete checkout within 72 hours.
- Save the completed order confirmation. If the deadline passes without checkout, expect Valve to cancel the reservation and proceed to the next applicant.
If your email says waitlist
- Keep your Steam account and contact email accessible.
- Check notices for movement into the reservation queue.
- Interpret comparisons only against the same storage model and shipping region.
- Do not assume that a waitlist email reserves hardware or guarantees a delivery date.
If you have not signed up
The original program required the eligibility conditions above and randomized entries on September 17, 2026. Because that date is past, look at the current official Steam Frame page rather than relying on old signup instructions or third-party claims that the original window remains open.
Bottom line: when do you actually have a Steam Frame?
You have a reservation opportunity when Valve places you in the reservation queue; you have a place in line, not a purchased headset, when Valve places you on the waitlist; and you have the product ordered only after accepting the purchase invitation and completing checkout within the 72-hour window. Capacity and region lock the queue after randomization, while cancellations can move waitlisted applicants forward. No status email by itself proves current inventory, a shipping date or a completed preorder.
